I dont know why my featured comment didn't save! The Sketch was done by TheZodiacLord on youtube and I did the inks and colors! We needed a new example for some halloween collab commissions! If you want more info on that please click my linktree and go to dA!
Ok to the whole commission isn’t real art thing: wasn’t the Mona Lisa commissioned? And wasn’t Michelangelo commissioned for a lot of his well know pieces?? Like what?
@@brb8407 Yeah. The Catholic Church was bathed in money at the time, so they basically paid Michelangelo to spend his life working on his commissions, even causing neck issues for the poor guy with his frescos. You’ll see just how rich they were by how much real gold lines the inside of the chapel.
there's also the people who like to bounce once prices are even mentioned lol I've had a good few people ask for a commission and when I bring up prices they never reply again 😂
I forgot to mention this in the video again But this is a COLLAB with @theZodiacLord On youtube. Where he did the sketch and I did the colors. Since we are planning to open up for halloween Collab commissions in the future and needed a new example. SKETCH IS BY (c) TheZodiacLord Inks and Colors (c) Done by Me Michelle Marquez / TwistedDisaster/Twist3ddisast3r
I dont know where people started mixing it up started either. Plus, like you've said in the past, art is a luxury item people dont NEED it. The time thing too is annoying. When they're either not an artist, or used to the commission side of the art community I guess it's hard for them to understand the concept of how long it might take for people to finish work, especially if they're back logged. (Plus needing money to live so having to take more commissions)
Well if you want to hear more of commission talk by Michie there is a video where her and EmpressKaiju [formerly ArofexDracona] talk about commissions at length here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-acl0S_8BJAw.html
Thanks for the tips about selling commissions without PayPal! I’ve been wanting to do commissions for a while now just for a bit of pocket cash, but thought I couldn’t without a PayPal. I’m excited to open up commissions soon!
TwistedDisaster and EmpressKaiju have a commission tips podcast here if you are interested in hearing more information: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-acl0S_8BJAw.html C: Hope that helps!
I get this all the way. I've had people try to commission me to draw art for free, and i'm so tired of it, I DON'T WANT UR EXPOSURE! I need money for my work and time. It's so frustrating when I get basically told that my art isn't worth money because I'm a smaller creator on insta.
Thanks for making this video A couple days ago I was talking with my parents on how I’m gonna start doing commissions And how when I get older I wanted to be a freelance artist and my parents mentioned “oh okay but make sure to take care of yourself maybe take swimming classes or exercise from time to time” And me (a 12 year old child) my mindset was yeah okay sure but it’s not really that important I’m just gonna be drawing and animating But after watching this video my mindset change and how that yeah I should take care of myself and not overwork myself So thanks for changing my mindset When I’m older I’ll make sure to take care of myself and take needed breaks (Also beautiful artwork!)
It's super cool to hear a video on this topic! I really like the part where you mention amazon wishlist commissions- I know I've done those before, and it's nice to hear someone talk about that option!!
Frankly I feel like a lot of the "free commissions" line of thought stuff is affected by sites like DA that normalize alternative currencies with very extremely poor exchange rates so you have kids who are only 14 who's only experiences with business involve selling their craft for pennies in what isn't even real world dollars, which in turn leads to an atmosphere where art itself is really really devalued and people get ideas of professionalism that are very different from actual commission work. It's easy to see where the line of thought can drift from "I commissioned someone with money" to "I commissioned someone with DA points" to "I commissioned someone with game currency/art/ect" until the concept of a commission is completely detached from the idea of working for profit and more thought of in regards to "I am doing this for someone else". That said, I feel like commission ettiquette in general isn't really talked about enough and a lot of kids have no idea how to navigate things like pricing, communication, professionalism, and just overall how to conduct themselves in a thoughtful and responsible way. I see a lot of bad behavior, poor decisions, or undervaluing specifically because a lot of these younger artists don't really have a lot of guidance in their craft and they've just never been taught better by someone who had their best interest in mind.
I hate to say this but not knowing how to be professional can be easily fixed with any customer facing regular job. Idk that’s just my experience. Was serving for 4 years, did a lot of retail, even worked in a call center, so I racked up some customer service skills lol
Oh my. The point about art taking time. I do commissions on Amino quite a bit for DA points or Amino Coins and people are so impatient. There have been times Its been a day and people are already asking for a progress shot or ask “hows it going” once a day. I’ve told people I have a life, but it doesn’t stop them from asking. There have been times that I’ve put these people higher on my comm list so I don’t have to deal with them anymore. I’m a full time High School student and have other priorities then drawing Furry art 24/7.
On the subject of artists working too much in streams. Literily knew someone who would stream on Picarto for like 8-14 hours every day to every other day. Huge yikes there.
Some people are a pain. My lowest commission prices on DA are 30 point or so and one guy was like can you do my weird creepy Fanart of Batman and mavis Dracula for two points. Grant it I did do a few pieces for him before his requests got super weird and gross and uncomfortable. Two points isn’t what you pay for commissions dang it. You pay what the artist asks. Good grief.
Ahh I love it your art style. Your voice is weirdly calming, it adds a lot of emotion to your stories. Also, please take care of your self cause less stress helps you do your best 030
honestly, the only complaint i've ever had for a commission is the wait. i had to wait nearly three years to finally receive what i ordered, and i chucked it to a loss after the first year, and was shocked when i actually got it
I feel ya on the proper equipment. I'm getting back into my artwork and going from traditional to digital. I've been working on a Wacom Intuos pro and would absolutely love to get a Cintique but I work part time and have bills (yay for adulting!). I recently got asked if I do commissions after showing a gaming buddy some of my inktober stuff. I told him that I wasn't yet because I was trying to get better at my art before venturing into the realm of actually getting paid to do it...not to mention I don't have much free time atm due to it being hunting season and per my dad's doc he doesn't want him up in the woods alone for hours on end. He has heart issues, and while he's been doing really well better safe than sorry. Anyway, I really enjoyed this vid and look forward to watching your other videos...when my life isn't being eaten up by other things.
Ah yeah, I've seen people getting commissions confused with requests/giftart/fanart >.> I've even had people try to order commissions from me, not knowing that it wasn't free. Also, Being a Freelance Artist for Main Income Squad
Hey, Michie! Another wonderful video! (sorry if I'm commenting a lot) but, I wanted to know your opinion on "Being inspired Vs Copying" (example: someone liking a dress from another person's oc, and they put it on their oc without changing it up or anything.) :)
It always bothers me when people think artists who take commissions should pump them out right then and there; like the moment you hand over the money you should receive a perfectly polished work of art. That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but people that act like that honestly just make my blood boil. Like, artists are human too, back off people.
I've had people also request in the past that I take payment only after the commission has been done. I wanted to it be this way but I got screwed over in the past. So now i only allow it for top commissioners I can trust.
@@Twist3dDisast3r That makes a lot of sense. It sucks that people would stoop so low as to do that - I've heard some really bad horror stories about situations that artists have gotten into because commissioners are stuck up pricks.
@@CrazyGreenFluff I'm really sure it's not. Everyone works at their own pace. It's ignorant commissioners who just merely assume art can be summoned out of someone's ass the moment money comes their way. XD
"Free commissions" LOL, I think I've seen that floating around. The people are confused so it's good to make this video to correct them. Anyway Michie, about the glasses, are they dimming glasses against blue light for night time? I know you work a lot in the night. Get a screen dimmer so your eyes aren't straining in the dark. It helps me a ton. I get my screen dimmer from www.skytopia.com/software/sunsetscreen/
Tried a screen dimmer that stopped blue light, and it triggered a migraine. It mostly made things have a red tint and painful to look at for me. It was like no wonder people go to sleep easier, they can't do more than lie in a dark room perfectly still.
@@selbarton Sorry to hear that! I've never had a migraine before from it and have been using it for a few years now. I use it on the lowest setting at night. Not so red tinted on the lowest setting.
Ugh, I get people all the time who ask for commissions from me without understanding that it requires them to PAY MONEY. So many people seem to think this isn't a job and that if you love what you do, you should just to it for free.
Oh I didn't expect to suddenly relate, but I had an opposite experience with a person not long ago, when I promo-ed my "sketch requests open" kind of post in a discord server, because I was hyper and needed stuff to draw, and they started going on about how they don't have money for commissions. And we went back and forth with me saying that it's not commissions, it's free art, and them saying "nonono you don't understand I'm underage I don't have paypal I don't have money!!!" It was the weirdest trippiest experience ever.
I recently paid an artist with google play gift card for a commission and on amino I paid an artist for a commission and they have told me in advance that they were going to be busy cause of school and home. And I just told them that it's ok. They could take their time and I understand that life can get in the way in things
i had a small minecraft youtuber block me on twitter and tell his friends to block me because i never completed a request for him i said id do /only/ if i felt like it, that he kept referring to as a “commission” and commenting on all my tweets for updates on how his “commission” was coming and it just. F.
As an artist who also suffers from chronic wrist pain, I appreciate your honesty about your wrist issues. Also what kind of arthitis medicine did you use? I've been trying a couple of different things to minimize pain (braces, yoga, stretches) and I'm always on the lookout for potential solutions.
a year late, but I never knew people had this misconception of the word commissions? Like i always thought everyone knew what it meant? New time for everything.
I know this isn't what you were talking about but it is about commissions. I honestly wish people would understand that sometimes artists need to take a break from their commissions and draw something personal. I've had to take a break from commission work cause I felt overwhelmed by it. Then I drew something for myself to clear my head. I havent had an experience were a customer got mad at me but I know it does happen.
I just got my first proper commission for a little girls birthday to paint decorative paintings. I'm so excited! Hopefully the word will get out with other moms and people and I can get money for art supplies. But I also hope I don't get one of these situations where they don't know what a commission means. My mom didn't know, I had to explain it to her. She thought the only meaning was something to do with retail. Anyways great video!
Well yey a binge! but it's why I try to say now that I post every Wednesday so its easier for people just to check back on that day to see. Since youtube wont Notify people any more
Wait, how do you mix up commissions and art requests?? Also about that computer eye syndrome, I’m actually low key worried I may develop it because while I don’t stare at my phone or computer screen for multiple hours at a time, I do still look at them really often 😬 I do get headaches from the light on occasion.
Juju Bees best to go see an eye doctor and find out. I just went for a check up which is when my doctor told me I had it and wanted to run some more tests.
My family is actually fed by the governors here so any money I receive will be deducted from my parent's monthly cash they receive. So I didn't do commissions until very late 2018, the time when I am actually 18 and am able to earn money without having my parent's money deducted. So yeah, I have my reasons to not accept commissions from people for a literal long time.
I'm surprised there's this confusion about commissions vs requests but hey I grew up in a time when people started using places like DA for paid commission work, so I guess nowadays there are people switching around terms when they shouldn't. I remember I once had a person on DA send me a note in regards to drawing their character, and their reply when I responded to them with my commission price list? "Oh, I don't DO commissions." I mean really? It was the most condescending response I ever got in response to wanting to get paid for my work!
Why does this sound like you're trying to tell a certain person who thought commissions can be payed through exposure? Sorry if this sounded rude, I've just been seeing a lot of videos on a specific youtuber using art without credit and promised to pay in exposure for a commission.
I have a question. Say I have art commissions and I want to post it online. Would that be okay? Or is a slow down-it won’t be loved all at once approach? Or people may try to copy and steal your work?
Please don't forget doing fanart is risky. If the creator of those characters does not permit it, then it is copyright theft. It does not matter if one makes bank, just that it can be shown to damage the brand. So it isn't really permitted to do even gift art without the copyright holder's permission to do so. I hate when it is made to sound like laws don't apply when they do. Just because companies tend to let fandom slide for the free publicity, it doesn't mean it isn't risky. (That topic is one of my buttons like commissions are not free is here.)
A commissioner asked me to draw a full body of three characters, and my commission prices were kinda low so I thought they would be affordable so the commission was only $20. I started the first character that day and finished it the next day, I started the sketch for the next one and took a break before I did the lineart and I got a text message from the commissioner “ hi, I’m sorry but I cannot afford the commission” “Can I have it for free or cheaper” FREE OR CHEAPER *FREE OR CHEAPER* I asked why they would commission me if they didn’t have the money, They left the chat- Left The Chat ----------- Not really a bad experience but...: Another person messaged me and all they said was “ can I have art of this character? * insert image * I asked what they wanted ( fully rendered half body + background ) I told them the price ($10) And they said “ oh, you have to pay?” I said yea Person: “ Nevermind then”
It's not just buyers that misunderstood the concept of commission. You quite often find the artists mistake commissions. A huge problem is artists thinking that being the creator also means being the owner. There has been a lot of drama in the furry community in the last few years of artists "revoking rights for commissions". If you commission something, 9 times out of 10, you own it. Back in late 2017 I commissioned some concept art based off sketches I did, for a game I was building. I spent about $4000 on 5 images on the grounds that they were confidential and couldn't be uploaded or put into a portfolio for 3 years. One week after payment, they gleefully uploaded work on a new indie game......... They and my lawyers are currently having heated discussions about what an NDA is.
I’m one of the people who can draw really quickly Although it’s only for cats I can draw a fully shaded scene with multiple cats in 1-3 hours, with some of my longest art projects being like 5-6 hours. But I can only draw cats Although sometimes I’m busy, or procrastinating, and wait a week before starting on it lol
I've been wondering this forever, how do you have Gaussian Blur in Paint Tool SAI? Do you have a plug-in or something? I've been searching forever and haven't been able to find any answers.
once i took a commission last year that i had planned to do that day, and then three months passed by. i still feel guilty about it. i dont even know what happened. we're in the same guild discord server, and i dont think they like me still because of my fuck up ): am i bad person for forgetting? i refunded them but i havnt gotten a comission since because no one knows me and my art is hit or miss.. ):
I did an art trade and.... My character had big rabbit ears but long goaty muzzle.... And the opposite side drew a fucking mouseee... I'm crying.... It has a small.. small muzzle... Massive head... And straight shorter ears.... Ahhh
3:13 is there a difference between freelance and commissions? A lot of people talk about them differently but you’re talking about it as if commissions and freelance are the same.
Okay so! I understand what you mean, but I do think that a commission can be for other thinks than just money. ( Stay with me, I'll explain :-D ) So you can do a commission/freelance work for other things. Like if your friend buys you dinner, someone will help your computer issue, or even for exposure. I'm not saying whether it's good payment (particularly for the latter), but I think it still is a commission. You do work, you get paid. In some way. As you say, gift art and requests are not, because you don't expect anything in return. Those are not a paid service, so they are not a commission. But don't get me wrong, I don't condone working for exposure (unless you are a big fan or they have a hUGE audience who would be interested in your work). I do however think that it's not judt about money, but about getting paid in one way or another. The reason getting paid in exposure is bad is because it isn't a good pay most of the times, yet beggars or entitled people think it is all the artist needs. Still though I think it's a good thing to acknowledge that payment can come in other forms that "MO-NEY" I wholeheartedly agree there is no such thing as a "free commision" that's just not how it works, but I think Payment and value is up to the individual artist :-) Btw I love your vids Michie, I hope it doesn't come off as mean, I just thought I'd chime in with a personal view of the definition you sat in the start of the video ^^
