My grandfather and grandmother came to Trinidad as indentured labourers at around 12 years old...no other family member. They said the conditions were terrible as the lady said...somebody had to do the work at a salary of one cent...either a day or week...I don't remember.

Enjoying your videos, I applaud you both. The African Diaspora throughout the Caribbean and USA is essential the same (enslavement), you are doing a fine example of enhancing information. I am from Trinidad and Tobago, (Trinbagonian) my mother's grandmother was part Carib (the Indigenous people) and African. The Carib peoples still have a language, and they built a local museum of the culture, even though it is small. Like most people in Trinidad, I grew in a place where churches, mosques and temples, and my family are Christian, Muslim and Hindu are normal. My husband’s grandfather was from China and his mother’s grandparents were from India (the days before Pakistan was created). Mixture of African and Indian are called Dougla, there are many Africa/Chinese. Influence of Africa and India is mostly seen in Trinidad and Tobago, and Chinese are next, then Portuese and Syrian. The African diaspora remained resilient despite the horrors of the middle passage. Each Caribbean island held slave revolts, most notable Haiti but also Cuba in 1825, St. Vincent in 1795-1797, Trinidad and Tobago in 1837. In turn these same islands fought for their independence from European powers, Haiti being the greatest and the first sending shockwaves down the archipelago. To date there are Sixteen islands being independent and eight both independent and republics.

Its good for us to be able to embrace our history and learn from it. I don't think we appreciate it enough as African Caribbean, we don't discuss it at a family level. But as I was saying before that the indentured groups tend to do better when it comes to generational wealth because they had access to land and other amenities .

I'm indian, got African, Latino and Chinese relatives. My wife's last name is Irish and she is mixed up with indian and whatever else. Trinidad and Tobago is a one exotic ethnic melting pot for such a small population.

They forgot to mention the Jamaican Germans who came as indentured servants as well. They lived in a town in Montego Bay called Seaford Town where they can be found today.

Even though in this video they're put separately, Portuguese are Europeans, also notable Europeans like the Irish Jamaicans which are a very important part of Jamaican culture, French Haitians, Polish Haitians, Spaniards in various countries, also different religious communities, some very old Jewish communities around the Caribbean, Hindu communities where South Asians descendants are, also Muslim communities in Suriname, where there's a big Indonesian (Javanese) community and South Asians Muslims, these two groups makes up the majority of the Muslim population, it's pretty much the same in Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago but without the Indonesians

It wasn't just that they had to make it look good . The thing is, it was also a devide and conquer strategy . Because they didn't want all these ethnic groups to be 1 nation . So, for example, in suriname, what the Dutch would do is give the Indian population a little bit of humanity back by ,letting them do their traditions and giving their own little political structure, At the same time, not giving that to the decendends of the African former enslaved people. In that way, they ensured that these groups didn't come together to fight against the system They also gave the Indian groups ( at least certain family's) ground to plant on since most of them were farmers and land workers . In that way, they could gain somewhat of an economy for themselves. The final goal was to make Suriname into an south American version of DUTCH INDONESIA

Plz understand the endangered servants were given lands after their contact ended. But the slaves were given nothing. That's why blacks in the Caribbean had to wrk much harder than any other ethnicity in the Caribbean. Up to this day it's very hard for us blacks in the Caribbean

Actually, I think the Africans in the Caribbean "got out early" when slavery was abolished, however, they weren't paid and had no land. The Europeans needed to replace this "workforce" so that's where the Indentured Servants came in. Indentured servants were paid but tbh, it was pennies. Some had land tho. As they years progressed, some groups had better incentives.

Jamaican Motto: Out of many ine people. We dont classify people as Chinese Jamaican or German Jamaican. Everyone Jamaican is Jamaican as we are a melting pot of everyone and everyone is proud to be Jamaican. Can't speak for the rest of the Caribbean due to lack of knowledge and experience with how the ethnicities feel.
