Patrick Bond is Professor at the University of the Western Cape School of Government in Cape Town, having also taught at the two main universities in Johannesburg and Durban from 1997-2019. After moving permanently from the US to Southern Africa in 1989, he served township social movements working on financial justice based at the NGO Planact in Johannesburg from 1990-94. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office. Patrick is a prolific author whose best-known work is Elite Transition: From Apartheid to Neoliberalism in South Africa; other critical analyses can be found in books such as Politics of Climate Justice, BRICS and Resistance in Africa, and Against Global Apartheid.
Trevor Ngwane worked during the apartheid era as a sociology lecturer at Wits University in Johannesburg, where he helped found the Wits Workers' School, to teach literacy to the campus cleaners and gardeners. He was the National Education Officer for the Transport & General Workers Union of the Congress of South African Trade Unions. In 1995, he was elected Ward Councillor for Pimville in the township of Soweto, on an African National Congress ticket. In 1999, he was expelled by the ANC for opposing the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality's privatization of municipal services. In 2001, he helped found the Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee, and then the Anti-Privatisation Forum in 2002, which both campaign against the privatization of public services.
