I don't blame them for not recognizing this dog as a dog, they really grow big and it's impressive.

I had a dog save me from myself as well. More incredibly, he was not mine and he appeared out of nowhere on very remote beach that was otherwise empty. He came up silently and immediately leaned hard against me; there he stayed and we watched the water until I finally had the strength to leave. When we were halfway up the rocks I turned to him but he was gone. I looked everywhere and went back for days to find him again. When vacation was over I was on the dirt road leading to the paved route and at the last driveway there he was, sitting alone but at full attention watching me slowly pass by. I could see his family up by the house and wondered if they knew that they were living with a beautiful and powerful spirit; disguised as a small dog?

Awesome dogs! A neighbor had two Newfies when I was young (both weighed about 180 I think) and we would have them pull us around on our skateboards! Not fast, just walking around. The dogs would actually bring us the skateboards, carrying them in their mouths. This was the late 70's when skateboards were mostly small plastic things that weighed maybe a pound or two. Always great fun and great protection. Nobody messed with us when we were riding.

It's like animals feel your pain and see all the emotions.

This dog certainly is "angelic"! He really seems to have formed a bond with your little boy when he was still in your womb. We definitely don't know just what kinds of "powers" animals have! We had one just like him for 13 years and his temperament and size were a lot the same as your Napolean's. He was one of a litter of 6 puppies that my husband and I found in a culvert by a busy road not far from our house in the country. Turned out that the mother belonged to a man who lived about a 1/4 mile from there, down that road, and that poor mama had no shelter at all, anywhere, so she had done the best she could, bless her! We kept Sam's sister Tipper, and found homes for the other 4 puppies, two to each home. We never knew who their papa was, but the vet said Sam was definitely a Newfie! He was so huge and sweet and lovable and laid-back that we sometimes would call him Doofy Sam. He will always have a special place in our hearts, as will Tipper and the other four! Napolean brings back lots of sweet memories to us. You and your son are so fortunate to have him, and he, you!

Just to let you know my daughter also suffered with depression after giving birth. Very hard for her as she's had 3 pregnancies while finishing a Doctorate . Things are better now but not 100% back to how she use to feel. Sentient Beings are our salvation.

I really feel with this story. I knew I had depression from a young age, but I went through a really bad cycle of it when I dealt with emotional abuse from a caretaker who was also suffering mental illness. I was in a really dark place and thought of ending it multiple times, and every time I did, there was my maine coon cat, either yowling outside my door to be let in, or meowing at me and then head-butting me and demanding I cuddle him instead. He saved me many times, I can’t imagine life without him. Hes actually on my lap now.

I'm so sorry that you went through that while you were pregnant. What a blessing that you had that angel with you to walk you through the dark to the light. Thank you for sharing what you went through. It's important for others to know that it can happen and you can come out on the other side.

I used to have a Newfoundland just like Napoleon. His name was Nelson.

This story reminds me of the movie A Dog's Purpose. (I highly recommend it!) We generally think we take care of our dogs. But, at the same time, THEY are clearly devoted to and taking care of US.

Not only did you save him he saved you. You were put together for a reason what a sweet baby he is.

I really appreciate that she spoke about the difficulties of pregnancy. Not I but I have encountered others that experiencing really bad depression during pregnancy. Newfies are super good dogs.

Having had 2 Newfoundlands in my life, they are truly wonderful dogs with the amazing capacity to love and protect their humans. It is a very Newfie trait to want to protect their family. So sorry to hear that you had a difficult pregnancy, but very happy for you that you made it through it and have a beautiful boy now.

This is such a strong lady. I had the same experience when Iwas pregnant for my 3rd child. All I ever heard was BS about how I should be "so excited!". My ex was zero help with that as well. Part of why he's my ex. I'm so glad she had someone so close to her! Not all superheroes walk on 2 legs.

Many moons ago, when I was a kid, we had a local ice cream shop... a lady had a newfoundland and she would bring him there. All the kids loved up on him, he was the most gentle, laid back dog I've to this day met. Truly gentle giants 💜

❤️ pregnancy can be incredibly difficult. I’m so glad you had a wonderful companion! I know i was lucky and blessed with two easy pregnancies so far. It just makes me grateful and pray for mom’s who suffer. I want every woman to get the support she needs and i want every father to know no matter how hard it may seem there’s light at the end of that tunnel if you hold on and love her.

I truly understand what you meant. I don't have children but my son Kaine was everything to me. I was depressed before he came into my life thought about crossing over alot of times, most of my friends are gone from violence my 14 year old girlfriend at the time was killed in Farrockaway queens. When Kaine died October 23, 2020 8:15am at the age of 8 due to cancer. I haven't been the same and the darkness is more dark. At night I ask him to come visit me in my dreams so we can go for a walk. We will meet again soon. R.i.p my son Kaine the best American staff

Newfies are so special. They were bred to help fishermen haul nets and to rescue people in the water. My brother had a Newfie, Holly, that would stay with the grandparents. She only did this with Grandma, when ever Grandma had a a bath Holly had to check the water before she could get in the tub, and then the dog sat in the doorway protecting her. I was visiting and working on a wood project in the garage. I was wearing eye and hearing protection. The door flew open and Holly ran to me with Grandma right behind. I was informed that there was a storm coming and Holly insisted I get in the house. Newfies are so protective and smart.

Newfies are the best...wonderful family dogs. First dog I ever owned. Her name was Seara. She passed almost 30 years ago. I still tear up.

We have friends who love hanging out at the river and their Newfie was always trying to save them when they would get in the water. He was a really great dog.

Newfoundland dogs are commonly mistaking for black bears. They are huge, dark, and they even have a muscular build similar to a bear for helping dockmen and sailors pull nets of fish.

Looks very much like a Newfoundland. We had one hanging around the neighborhood, before the leash law was ever enforced, and he stayed around my doorstep, because I'd feed him biscuits and such. Such a sweet dog! When I let him into the house, his back came right up to the kitchen stove. My mother found out who owned him and the woman came by and called him off the doorstep with a smile. Good memory. This was in 1957. I was 6 yrs. old. June

Pets are and have always been my therapy of choice. It's as if they feel your pain and want to do all they can to make it all better. ❤️ Love then always.

I was glad to read that Newfies can live up to 15 years. I had expected less. They are well known for their even temperament and stoic nature as well as their courage. One Newfoundland Dog called Seaman accompanied Meriwether Lewis and Clark on their expedition to the Pacific from the Mississippi River in 1803. He survived the three year trip but died shortly after Lewis died six years later in 1809. He refused to eat and pined away from grief, lying on Lewis' grave. Such is their attachment to their human companions.

This story really hit close to home. I’m still dealing with depression myself but it’s been easier to handle than before. There was a time, like a yr ago, when I wanted to end it. I thought about throwing myself into traffic and I was going to go through with it until I saw my cat following me. He’s afraid of cars, even though he likes to spend a good portion of his time outside. He was approaching me but at the same time getting spooked because of the cars. He got closer and closer to where he was right behind me and then I decided to not go through with killing myself. I was shocked that my cat would be doing something that he fears so much just to get close to me and get my attention. Life hasn’t been easy and honestly it never really is but I’ve learned that you can roll through with it quite well if you have a furry friend with you, by your side.

I can relate to this story on a personal level. I had a black Newfie years ago, we had his mom so I was sitting with her when he was born. I used to take him for a walk around the neighborhood and people coming toward us would cross the street to the other side and yell to me asking " Is that a bear ?" I always laughed and said " NO ! It's a Newfoundland !!" "It's a DOG !"

He is Gods blessing. Wow. Bless you for being so open. People need to realise how pregnancy can affect us. Growing a human is no small feat. He's a beautiful happy boy. With a beautiful mother and exceptional hairy friend. I had many dark days and I would "fake " alot. My son never knew different. He mostly knew he was loved and could approach me anytime.
