Fun fact: the actress who played Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) was all set to quit the show, before a big fan talked her out of it. Dead serious: the fan was Martin Luther King Jr (who was a fan of the show, but also the fact that a black woman, during the Civil Rights movement, was playing such a prominent role on a popular television show).

Unfortunately she was probably treated like crap off camera, probably why she wanted to quit. I don't really know if that's true, i'm just guessing. She deserves a lot of respect for sticking with it though, I hope she made an impact and what ever disrespect she got was worth coping with. @Jeff K Where did you get this info? After you said this iv been looking for some sort of making of Star Trek documentary. I would really like to know what it was like for these actors/actresses back then.

@Periwinkleeyes70 picking a single episode of Enterprise, DS9 or Voyager can be a bit of a challenge. Most of the epusodes contain substantial serial storytelling elements. Some early Enterprise epus might work, but knowing the running storylines got more important in later series.

Arena was also a very popular episode. I think they just wanted to show them a episode with more action in it since they were comparing it to Discovery. Unlike Discovery though, Arena actually had a moral point to make and made you feel good at the end.

They mentioned the short skirt, but Star Trek has always tried to make social progress. One of the first sci-fi shows to have a woman on the command crew (a BLACK woman!), the first interracial kiss on TV, interspecies sex... Despite the fact it still had some pretty lame shit in it, they've always tried to make progress.

Hell, TOS was supposed to have a female 2IC, but the studio intervened, and Grace Lee Whitney, the actress who played Janice Rand, wanted to wear a miniskirt to show off her dancer legs, which led to all actresses having to wear miniskirt.

I've been watching the original off and on since I was about eight years old. Every few years I can watch an episode again even though I've seen it many times. Yeah, it may be cheesy at times, but there's something about it that just appeals to me more than the later series. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it does.

You know, it might be a little difficult to find an Irish person who hasn't watched Doctor Who. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, where the show is made. It would kind of be like finding an American who hasn't watched at least some Star Trek. Sure, you can find them, but you don't expect it to be too easy.

I was kind of hoping they'd pick Let this be your last Battlefield, personally. I remember watching that as a teenager and being blown away by the reveal. A bit heavy handed, sure, but up until that point I had honestly not noticed that they were different. Arena however I think is one of the most well known and good time cheese-fest episodes.

1. "Bring back the lizards" & "lizard dress" - LOL. 2. People that age that have never seen any Star Trek are not die hard science fiction fans (and are therefore nearly impossible for me to relate to -:). 3. Despite their obvious character flaw (lack of sci-fi), I really enjoyed their reactions and liked how they recognized the importance of diversity in the shows. 4. I haven't seen Discovery, and I'm thinking I'm glad based on their comments.

The original Star Trek was character-driven - the crew liked each other and you felt good about the future of humanity. Star Trek Discovery is a story-driven, dystopian nightmare where everyone hates each other.

And what was Voyager? That wasnt exactly Utopian bliss...Also, even Discovery is character driven...just because it has a strong story like Deep Space Nine did, it doesnt mean it has weak characters. In fact, Deep Space Nine had BOTH strong characters and story.

Richard Depaola jr They were in the wrong side of the Galaxy. And you'll notice that Voyager brought 2 crews in conflict together, then added a Borg apostate to the crew. The crew is not supposed to fight amoungt themselves - Roddenberry made that a rule.

WTF are you talking about...the entire first season was the crew fighting...even with half the crew trying to oust the captain. And that was a repeated theme for 3 seasons. And here you are, now, judging a new show by HALF a season as if it will not evolve like the others did. Also, on Deep Space Nine, Sisko and Dax had more than a few spats so bad Dax was dismissed and came close to being discharged completely for insubordination. In fact, all of the main characters that were in Star Fleet had major spats at one point...hell, O'Brien and Keiko split for a near full season from their spat, both were in Star Fleet. Selective memory FTW.

The Michael character has already earned the trust and respect of part of the crew and its obvious to most that she will be the one that turns out to be the hero that ends the war she started.

Honestly, you should have shown them one show from each Trek. Original, Next Gen, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise and then that crap fest STD. The guy making the comment about diversity would have not had that BS argument after Benjamin Sisko and Captain Janeway. I mean the whole idea that Star Trek was not diverse was ridiculous. The latest show, STD (apt initials) is absolutely awful. The whole idea behind Star Trek was to have a hopeful future, not some dystopian horrid future.

The actor (actress was the word when I was young) playing Ohura wanted to quit because the show wasn’t giving her a challenge. MLKjr told her not to, that her role with people of color being mater of fact members of a team was what would move the civil rights movement forward. She’s a hero!

My dad's been into Star Trek since he watched the original series when he was a kid. I've seen a handful of episodes, but my 18 year old sister has watched the whole original series all the way through. Surprised me tbh, that a decent amount of young people are still interested in a show from the 60s.

It is atrocious. Thew true spiritual continuation of Start Trek is The Orville. The first episode pretty much sucks, but they get all of the groundwork out of the way in one episode - then it's on to one good episode after another, continually improving in quality throughout the first season. Season 2 hasn't started, but I'm eagerly awaiting its debut!

And yet, according to Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of people disagree with you (including a lot of critics who are bad at their job, given how much people love it). The original series, which they liked, has an 84% liked it rating. Granted, this is primarily because the lousy 3rd season dragging it down. The first two seasons are in the 90%s.

Hell yeah!!! Voyager also is quite good and even DS-9 gets better after the first 2 seasons or so, but STTNG is absolutely the best. Enterprise though.....let's not even give it more attention than just mentioning the name.

Appreciating the tv series that ran during the sixties without all the FX of today...is epic. It was all about messaging and crew relationships that resulted in a cult following...and these guys got it on the first viewing. Wow. And the girl in black is also a wow. :)

Aine: "Who's the guy in the red?" Security, also called redshirts, and they ALWAYS die. Interesting tidbit, the actual Most Interesting Man In The World (actor) is the only redshirt who actually survived a single appearance. It's kind of a thing over here.

TNG is the definitive Trek. That's when Roddenberry had creative control and certain people preserved his vision after his death when the writers wanted to do it their way. TNG is Trek.
