Where now for England? A failed experiment; Carsley might not want it full time and is Pep waiting in the side-lines? Gregor Robertson thinks his selections were indulgent, Hamzah Khalique-Loonat thinks they should be applauded. Tom Clarke still misses Southgate.
The Game football podcast is here twice a week as the new season starts. It's the thinking fan's podcast for the debate, the tactics, the personalities, injuries, goals and substitutions - whatever it takes to enjoy every nuance of The Game, even if the team has to go to extra time, or penalties to reach an agreement!
Presented by Tom Clarke with contributors including Martin Samuel, Jonathan Northcroft, Charlotte Duncker, Hamzah Khalique-Loonat, Gregor Robertson, Alyson Rudd and others.

Personally I am not in favour of a foreign manager. Pep is the very best of them but he just won’t have the time to drill his philosophy into the Senior team. He can’t go out and buy a number 6 who can take the ball on the half turn and get out of the press and play the ball progressively. Why would he take such a massive pay cut to manage England with all the baggage that goes with it? And let’s face it the expectations to win a WC and Euros without the proper structures in place. The other main thing to manage England is the honour of it. That can really only be felt by an Englishman. A foreign manager will always be a mercenary, who when things don’t go well can get out the contract. Hell we saw that with Don Revie if listeners are old enough to remember that. There’s a reason they call it poisoned chalice of a job.

This is such a moot point. Half the team already have the philosophy drilled into them as they worked under pep and the other half are in pep inspired teams. Pep has influenced the whole of English football, I’m pretty sure even players of other clubs can adapt to his tactics easier than before, hell all academy players are taught postional play and tiki taka, playing out from the back.

Did the times not see the interview with Pep yesterday when he unequivocally ruled himself out of the England job?
