I just got one today and it sounds incredible. The TC mode acts almost acts like an parametric EQ filter allowing you to really shape the sound. Side by side in your video the 33 sounds identical to the DT mode.
i'm not affiliated with pepers pedals - i do own one and have owned a few in the past, all great. highly recommend. if you're tempted, i'd say get one.
Cool review and thanks for doing the comparison. Both are very good at what they do, but I’d lean on the versatility of the Pepers. I never fully liked the one knob boosts, hence why I grabbed a LWA Slam Pig. But that Pepers TC/DT is super cool.
There seems to be an interesting buzzy, squeaky sound to the Dirty Tree, judging from this video. I do think it sounds cool, but I don't think I'd want that all the time. Would you say there's a way to dial that sound out of the Dirty Tree, or is it always present?
It's always there with most static EQ TC Electronic Integrated Preamp-style boosts like these. It's just a by-product of cutting the bass/low mid frequencies (or boosting the high mid/treble frequencies, depending on how you wanna look at it) with no compression from any distortion. EQ frequencies tend to mask each other, so boosting/cutting some makes other ones poke out. I get the same effect from my Lichtlaerm Aesahaettr. It definitely works better for getting better clarity out of extended-range guitars and muddier/fuzzier amps like Mesa Rectifiers, but if you're not a fan of that or that's not the sound you're going for, the only real way to not have that is by using a traditional overdrive pedal. The compression from the soft-clipping diode smooths those squeaky frequencies out.
@@MetalHeadProductions Even at original price, it’s a rip off. I got it 2nd round. Think they were $265 and then shipping. It is very cool yes! But I don’t use it to often.
It almost sounds like both create the buzz (on purpose), and the fortin is a digital buzz while the dt is analogue. I had to replay a few times to realize what I was hearing and ended up disliking what the fortin was doing.
33 sounds better. Clearer and no weird supersonic buzzy thing. I have the 33 and the GUP Tech Grindr, which is basically the TC, 33, AND the Grind in one pedal. It's almost the same as the 33 in 33 mode, but the Fortin just still has this supersonic sheen that is difficult to replicate. With that said, after mincing an Amp and recording, one might not Bea able to hear that supersonic high end, but you can definitely tel when playing through a live amp. Basically it comes from the 33 having an input impedance of 3.2 or 3.5m or whatever it was. I'm not sure what the GUP is.. Close in sound otherwise, vastly cheaper, and a really good way to get into this sound. The 33 might cut too much low end for some. The Grind is essentially the same, but the low cut isn't as high. If you were to set the TC mode EQ's to make it sound the same as the 33, to get it to sound like the Grind mode, you'd just turn the bass knob up like 5 degrees.
