White pepper from Penja, Cameroon is Sub-Saharan Africa’s first geographical indication (GI). Farmers hope the new GI-protected name of “Poivre de Penja” (Penja white pepper) will help them add value to a commodity crop by improving production and marketing techniques - and eventually boosting exports of the premium product, which would contribute to the development of the region and the country at large.
