1:23 I love the phase "It's always a kid" because it implies that it's not the first time he attacked a kid before checking and I like to imagine that they found the kid multiple times but he always killed it and the DM had to find a excuse for them to find another child and repeat the cycle
I think he says "there's always a kid". In the same way detectives in noir films would say "there's always a woman" as in for reasons men do stuff. But yes, the implication is that it's not the first kid who gets offed
This happens regularly in my D&D party, it somehow really is always a kid. It's not our fault that we accidentally summoned a kraken outside of an orphanage. Don't build your orphanage so close to the water!
I think it's supposed to be him coming to the session dressed up as his character from head to toe. But the "You're supposed to tell me what I see, right?" part shows he either just got too into it, or that he's not actually all that familiar with DND. And I like the idea of a guy who's that enthusiastic and into it that he shows up dressed as his character, but has barely played DND. lol
@@raspymorten I hope he is just a menace on the Renaissance Fair, Orchestra group, and musical theater club; and somebody made the mistake of telling him of a game where a bard can end people with his flute.
@HIAMNK @@Beth_OMette chaotic neutral is an alignment, which in dnd helps give an idea as to what the character is like. There's Lawful Good, Neutral Good, Chaotic Good, Lawful Neutral, True Neutral, Chaotic Neutral, Lawful Evil, Neutral Evil, and Chaotic Evil.
I like the implication that either A. Tom keeps taking the d20 on his turn and puts in his mouth to spit it out every time, or B. He just naturally has the ability to produce d20s from his mouth
On reflection, this is accurate. I recall one time we got carried away discussing our tactical situation after an end-game revelation (skill check) and the DM interrupted us as the BBG to say, "Uh, you know I'm still here and am listening to everything you say, right? Thanks for telling me your plan."
@@PenguinPoo4246 Eh, iirc the fight did not go according to plan at all. It wasn't a wipe but it got very messy. Our fault for getting carried away and letting player knowledge/talk bleed into the game. A salutary lesson learned!
"I cast Vicious Mockery, Nat 20, LETS GO" - Doesn't matter what happens afterward, any Bard who crits a Mockery and has a line for it automatically wins the session for the day.
@@eternasapphiremoon81 I was told by someone on YT that in the past in an older version VM was a to hit roll. In the edition where VM was first introduced. Bit I couldn't find anything about this only and have no idea what edition that would be XD
@@stuffandthings617 It has always been a Wisdom save since it was introduced in 4 e. However it was a lvl 1 spell instead of a cantrip and dealt 1d6 + 1d6 per higher spell slot. Before that the spell didnt exist although there are homebrews that add the spell to 3.5 and pf.
I just ADORE how the bard looks the same in and out of the fantasy. That means that either A.) The bard roleplays so hard he shows up in costume even when no one else does or B.) He probably didn't give a backstory or description, so everyone just imagines him to look like himself in the fantasy world. Both these possibilities are superb.
Given that he's not paying attention to his party's rolls, along with the rest of his shenanigans, it seems unlikely that he's that invested in the roleplay. Therefore we can assume that this is just how Tom is
The fact you commissioned one of the people who made animatics for this song and levelled it up into a full music video is like the best Christmas present to all of us. Brilliant.
I love how utterly positive the bard is about his party, even though they both just had critical fails. Like, he's making it look like they've got something more important to do than deal with a few bandits.
I'm SO happy LankyMF became the official animator for this one!!!!! his facial expressions in the original were hilarious and fit the song so perfectly. Couldn't imagine anyone else :)
I'm both intrigued and horrified by the DM growing 5 additional fingers to show 15 with two hands. Great job, this is one of my favorites of Tom's and you animated it beautifully
He was literally only letting the dm speak so that he could find an attribute to mock, also love how the DM has to check his notes to see if the kids body is still there
oh man really proud of the animator getting the full on collab. and to a lesser extent proud of tom for continuing his streak of good taste in animators.
stop me if someone pointed this out before but i cant help but notice that a. tom bardy's first action to prepare for combat is to roll an active perception check b. he doesnt seem to roll often as it takes him half a minute before he remembers the dm needs to actually tell him what he sees and c. this is not the first child that tom bardy has killed. with this in mind i can only assume that the last time it happened, the dm created a house rule where tom bardy has to succeed a perception check before he can actually cast spells. and yet it isnt enough to stop the bard.
The shot of the party in matching outfits getting their portrait taken makes me feel like, the bard’s impulsiveness aside, the party really are good friends, which is nice.
The other players staring daggers at the DM in the end is the perfect cherry on top of this masterpiece. Those looks just scream out "you're gonna let him get away with it....AGAIN??"
Good choice here. This is the best animated version of this song I've seen, and there was a LOT of competition. The rotation of the orb child: Smooth af. The flute playing: Inspiring. The finger snap and toe stand: On point. Trogdor on the cabinet in the background: Burninating. It's beautiful...
Don't forget the game master who looks suspiciously like Jeff Albertson (comic book guy) in the Simpsons. This detail alone makes the animation delicious haha
Undoubtly the best version of "Perception Check animated" of the all and I'm glad Tom had @LankyMF to fully animate his original sketch version! Bravo to everyone involved 😁
great job repeating words you just listened to. really. you're very impressive and unique for repeating 4 lines you heard in a song. keep up the good work.
I'm actually playing a Bard in my current campaign and I straight up clipped the Vicious Mockery song to keep in my back pocket (just in case) the moment I heard it - and managed to stop laughing. Turns out, one of our villains was a an evil gnome "mad scientist/genius" type of guy who always floated around on a device of his own design so he could be taller than everyone - minions and enemies alike. My DM likes to tack on random meme traits to most of his characters like that. Anyway, in our final encounter with him, the dice gods smiled on upon me as if I were their chosen champion because I managed to crit my Vicious Mockery I'd been saving for him all fight. With the sheer glee of a child who's just received the Christmas present they've been asking for all year, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone, brought up the clip while my DM was confirming my crit and played it from "Nat 20 LET'S GO!" (which was the start of the clip). Needless to say, any semblance of staying in character was immediately shattered as hard as the gnome's emotional state and it got so bad that we decided to break for lunch because the DM couldn't even manage to get out a line explaining the effect of my performance. Instead, he ended up settling on "he's fucked" before we all bailed to another room to sit down and wait for the pizza (that I ordered) only like 10 minutes before. As you would expect, after the food - which I was already very popular for ordering for everyone as a surprise - we got back to the table and resumed the session but for the rest of the day, my ego was untouchably inflated and for once, not a single person complained and I was treated like a genuine hero for the remainder of the afternoon/night. I couldn't have asked for a better time playing and it never would have happened without this absolute masterpiece so... Thanks Tom. You are an inspiration to us all.
@@jhayemdoubleyou Memory did me wrong. Not 3.5 but 4e, where it was Charisma vs Will Attack. So yeah, Vicious Mockery was able to crit once upon a time
The other members attacked first too... he was actually the last one to attack and the only one to ask for a perception check first, even if he didn't listen much to it. They know what their party is about.
Making a full animation is hard work. Most casual enjoyers don't have the motivation or time to make a high-fidelity work for the Web, and usually a middle-to-low fidelity works well enough.
@serenegenerally I'm aware that *this* isn't an animatic, but I remember seeing the animatic version of this when it was posted. I was just commenting on how rare it is to see someone that gets posted to RU-vid as an "animatic" actually get taken to the fully animated stage instead of just staying a fun little animatic
0:12 I like to think that steve's rogue is literally named "In Anticipation". "...well, I believe In Anticipation, my rogue, would try and hide behind a tree..."
The slow rotation of the orb baby during that devastating line to reveal that insanely tiny body is just perfect. Also matter-of-factly stating he hates it at the end is such a perfect punctuation to an otherwise brutal burn.
It’s also ethier a step brothers reference or that really old viral video about the two brothers taking a holiday card for there mom and keep arguing lol or even both but i think there wearing the same clothes from the viral video thou
Everyone else is pointing out all the little visual gags, and I love those too, but really my favorite part is just how he jumps all over the place when he plays the flute
DM is so pissed because you weren't supposed to figure out that the child had faked his kidnapping so he could start controlling his evil legions in his first foray into gaining enough power and influence for his aspirations to eventual lichdom.
oh my god i’m so happy this animatic was the one chosen for the final music video. it was literally my favorite to watch. a notification has never excited me more.
When I get to play D&D as a party member, I'm sometimes a Bard. When I'm a Bard, I bring my tambourine and just leave it on the table in front of me to make everyone anxious. Once in a while, I will actually pick it up and play with it to match what my character is doing. It's like an annoying little surprise!
I love that when the DM says, "YOU perceive-" that they do the most sarcastic smile in the world for exactly five frames before rapidly becoming a meltdown.
I love Tom works together with artists that make art with his song and pays to get a full version made. It warms my heart that he cares about supporting other artists.
the tom cardy standin is rightfully getting praise but ireally love the designs of the other people at the table. the sparse facial hair, blemishes, yellowish teeth, all these little things make them feel real and remind me of my high school friends. :)
The way the bard is casually producing 20s from his mouth is somewhat motivating me to master the art of it myself. And this is the type of shenanigans we all need to experience with our bros regularly
I have no idea why the tongues are green but that honestly just adds to the experience, thank you for making such an awesome memeable song and thank Lanky for following up with just as awesome memeage!
Going to repeat the sentiment that I'm so glad LankyMF got to fully animate the official music video. I've seen quite a few animatics for this song but the original of LankyMF's really had just the right vibe. And honestly the rotating baby animation was hypnotizing even in the original, really flowing in-time with the music perfectly.
I remember when this was just an animatic! What a glow up, this was easily my favorite one that cropped up when the original dropped so it's awesome seeing it fully completed like this ❤
YEAHHHH This animatic was my fave cause it captured the original song so perfectly!! Glad you got to work with the og artist to get a fully animated music video!
Looking back on it, this is the exact reason why using a 20-sided die for almost all things in a tabletop is both aggravating and filled with comedic potential.
I like to think that the other two people with the kid fled in terror because these random people on the road saw them, brutally killed the child, and proceeded to immediately loot the body.
Nice! I love that you picked one of these to be your official music video! I've so much enjoyed watching all the animations that popped up on RU-vid. For weeks, I kept thinking there must be some competition or challenge somewhere that instigated all of them, but... no! People just loved this song and so did I! LankyMF definitely knocked it out of the park, and all the extra work put into it is great.
HECK YEAH this is truly the animation that caught the vibe of the song PERFECTLY, so glad it's the official video - so well earned and befitting. Amazing job!!!
