I actually like the way the show did the reveal about Luke more than the book version tbh

Right? It makes it so much more painful somehow. His character seems so much more nuanced early on

@@witchy.business I think maybe Rick didn't fully know where he was going with the character when he wrote book one. Because we see more of this Luke starting from book 3 onward. So I'm thinking he decided to show the sympathetic side right from the outset this time around.

Apparently, Lance Reddick died only 4 to 6 weeks after shooting this episode, but he had a blast doing it and kept referring to it as Shakespearian.

"Is she writing a book?" Oh my god I didn't think of that! I just assumed it was like a dream journal, but it could also definitely be that she's writing a book. It was a very background thing, but The Lightning Thief book did establish that Sally's dream job was to be a novelist.
@logann-mackenziefroste563
@logann-mackenziefroste563 7 месяцев назад
She is writing down Percy’s dreams so that they can talk about them. The morning routine with Percy and Sally is very ADHD relatable as is writing down one’s dreams or thoughts.
@nicolaashamman6201
@nicolaashamman6201 7 месяцев назад
@logann-mackenziefroste563 Yeah that option makes more sense really. I got very excited about Monty coincidentally mentioned her writing a book, I didn't think that writing down the dreams is more relevant to the scene. I never did manage to successfully write down my dreams to account for my ADHD, never even thought of them as being especially good for people with it.

@lilovebird 7 месяцев назад
Bruh that's a good thing Kronos does not have the demigods well being in mind, he's just using Luke as a means to an end(let me know if I misread your tone)
@rhaenatargaryen8061
@rhaenatargaryen8061 7 месяцев назад
@@lilovebird obviously, but luke has their well being in mind and thats why he's a sympathetic character, and thats doubly true in-universe where the people who he's trying to recruit have their lives threatened by this status quo. Obviously kronos is taking advantage of the gods being evil to be even eviller, but that complexity is where all the interesting discussions lie

Congratulations on finishing percy jackson! I'm so happy no one spoiled you in the comments, it kept the surprise and fun. As for me, I really really love this finale. They were able to tie-up all loose ends and have set-up the future seasons well. I cried so hard even though I already knew what was going to happen. 😅 I guess I'm just emotional that I finally got to see the adaptation my comfort books deserve. I can't wait for the next season (imo future books are even better). Fingers crossed they greenlit it already. Also, if you're interested for more pjo contents you can watch/react to the Documentary they released in Disney+, the title is "A Hero's Journey". You'll get to see how much passion and heart they put into creating this show.

I'm with the man here: Sure, a longer fight would have LOOKED cool because the Ares/Percy fight was a real eye candy, bit yes, Percy wouldn't have lasted much longer against the _god_ of war,a longer fight would have made it unbelievable.
@themisheika
@themisheika 7 месяцев назад
And it makes sense in-universe too, that's why Percy specifically set the rule to "first blood" not victory. He knows his limits and he's not arrogant enough to believe he can beat Ares.

The PJO fandom is one of the coolest that I've been part of. We ALL keep the Luke betrayal a secret. It's an unspoken pact. Also, I love that there's this huge message about morality (especially considering that the gods are not exactly moral, historically speaking) between Percy and Luke. They both basically want the same thing, but their moral compasses are so different that they're going about it in two very different ways.

This is why Sally is the MVP of the books. She raised him right. She is the reason why Percy never became like Luke.

As a long time fan, who read the books as a kid, one of the things that I love as the show comes out, is to see people react, especially to Luke’s betrayal. As a fandom, I feel like we just in general have agreed to not spoil that for people.

Great show. And great breakdowns. I like how the show did everything. Never read the books, but I saw the first movie. The Luke thing I remembered pretty much right from the start. But I love the fact that they mention Hermes being God of thieves as well as travelers. So fitting that his son would be a thief. In mythology, one of Hermes' sons is the king of thieves

I love your discussions - it has been such a joy to watch this show with you!! I especially like the part where you talk about Percy persevering & Poseidon surrendering. Poseidon's decision to become the loser of the war and to set his ego aside does so much to humanize the gods in Percy's eyes. Because yes, he does see Luke's point of view. Yes, the gods are often selfish and arrogant. Yes, they are failing at being parents. But they can also be protective and caring. They do have the ability to put the needs of people and the needs of their children above their ego.

According to Rebecca Riordan, they deliberately toned down Gabe's cruelty for the show. Him dying like that also has another effect: it leaves that last line of the prophecy unresolved to possibly mean something else in the future.

You're absolutely right about the themes of trauma and childhood. As someone who grew up traumatized and who has ADHD, Percy Jackson was such a core part of my childhood/adolescence. Finally, I was represented, and not as someone dumb, or as just some silly quirk. It genuinely affected the characters, and they persevered. Annabeth in the books was blonde with grey eyes, just like me, and a total nerd, but STILL HAD ADHD and dyslexia, and it in NO WAY demeaned her intelligence. That really resonated with me (hated being assumed to be a "dumb blonde" lol). I'm sure this iteration of Annabeth will do the same for kids who grow up with this series. The actress KILLS the role, and manages to both stay true to the character while also making it her own. A LOT of kids going through trauma and/or with learning disabilities found solace in these books, and that was the intention. So to have Percy begin both the books and the show by warning the audience if you relate, you may be one of them, it felt both ominous and welcoming. Camp Half-Blood was a place for people who are different, for the ones to whom "the world feels wrong." I needed that. These books helped me persevere, and to not accept the awful treatment my parents gave me. That it's okay to stand up for myself. To be different without shame or guilt. It gave me a place to belong.

The most underappreciated actor from this series is Child Percy (not Walker; the younger kid). His scenes with Sally Jackson in episode 7, in particular, are phenomenonal. It is very hard for a child as young as him to play such complex scenes that well.
