what I love about this is that unlike the books situation. Gabe was turned into stone because he "kinda" deserved it. In the movie, it happened because he did something he was told not to do and he wanted some stupid beer cans LOL In the tv series, it happened because he was too curious. basically *curiosity killed the cat* I guess that was the only way considering he wasnt like in the books
I kind of felt like this Gabe was closer to the books than the movie (though Joe Pantoliano had the skuzz down better imo). I don't think Disney was going to go overt in the domestic situation between Sally and Gabe, so change it to curiosity rather than Sally getting rid of her abuser. The few changes that stood out to me made sense as opposed to the two movie adaptations and their questionable changes.
