Apparently Rick and his wife had a meeting with the rest of the team and they came to an agreeance that the character of Smelly Gabe, who is abusive and horrid in the books, would be too confronting for younger viewers and needed to be confined to a man who was harsh and rude, but not as violent as book Smelly Gabe.

Not to give the Movies That Never Were any credit but couldn't they make Gabe like that iirc he didn't do on screen anything horrible and yet there was zero doubt he was actually threatening and abusive to both Sally and Percy. He was in no way comical. Which made Sally murking him feel 100% justice and vindicated whereas if it would feel like a little OTT and more like Sally should just dump his ass/kick him out if Sally tried to do that to this Gabe

Things I loved about this episode: *1)* Percy questioning who took the Master Bolt, unlike in the book where he and everyone else agrees it was Hades, until he starts getting visions of Kronos. I like him being sceptical much earlier. *2)* I said in the last episode's video that I liked Percy appearing to condemn Poseidon more than in the book, where there's more of an internal back-and-forth over whether he wants His approval. However, with the last episode changing things so that Poseidon saves Percy without Percy praying to Him, it makes sense that Percy would ask himself if Poseidon _does_ care after all. *3)* Percy spotting Annabeth's awkwardness on the roadside, assuming it's because of the hug, and telling her that hugging is a normal thing to do with people you like, he thinks. *4)* Love, love, _love_ that Ares' helmet and coat give me World War soldier vibes. I didn't care for His description as a biker in the book, because "biker" felt disconnected to "war", but maybe this is what Riordan had in mind and I just glossed over an adjective or two that would have led me towards that image. *5)* I like that Annabeth doesn't introduce Ares as the God of War, maybe because He's already one of the better-known Greek gods in the modern consciousness, thanks to IP like _Wonder Woman_ and (ha-ha) _God of War._ *6)* _"Zhen you try und post about it on your Facebook, but zhen all your friends start arguing about vot's right und vot's wrong. Flame vor."_ - Ares, probably. It is so stupid but so perfect that he goes around starting fights on Twitter. *7)* Gabe going to the press feels like it makes more sense in this adaptation, where he's been portrayed as annoying and delusional rather than aggressive. *8)* Percy promising step-patricide, and Ares liking him for it. *9)* Ares saying that Zeus' defeat of Kronos "set the tone right out of the gate." *10)* Although it probably doesn't have any significance, I like the parallel of Ares saying Olympians will happily throw each other down stairs, which was what Percy said he could count on Annabeth to do if the quest demanded it in Episode 2. Maybe that's meant to be a red herring to new fans that she'll betray Percy (like Ares described) but for a good reason (like Percy described)? *11)* Annabeth being standoffish with the God of War. It was more Percy's trait in the book, but maybe this is to show Percy's impertinence is rubbing off on her. *12)* Percy looking side-to-side before agreeing to get Ares' shield. I know he's just supposed to be looking at his offscreen friends, but my initial interpretation was Percy thinking "Okay, even with 'the Mist', did no-one hear this man saying, very loudly, that he was going to kill us?" *13)* Did Percy just accidentally propose a cinema date with Annabeth? *14)* Again, Annabeth doesn't immediately describe Hephaestus as the god of fire/artisans/blacksmiths when Percy gets stuck in the turnstile. As the show goes on, it seems to be trusting its audience to already know (or quickly google) its mythical characters. Personally, I'm familiar with Him thanks to the HEPHAESTUS subfunction in the _Horizon_ games. *15)* Grover's brief conversation with Ares about war. A+, no notes. *16)* Changing the park, from a regular one that Hephaestus built a trap in, to His _own_ park just makes Ares going there with Aphrodite all the more... what's the word... impertinent! No wonder He took a liking to Percy. *17)* The lightshow of Hephaestus' story, not only because it's beautiful and informative, but imagine Ares and Aphrodite trying to get in the mood whilst Her husband's autobiography is being performed on the walls. *18)* Grover's second conversation with Ares. Again, no notes. *19)* Like with Medusa telling her backstory in Episode 3, I like the show adding details of Greek mythology that the book didn't include (maybe later books cover these, I only re-read the first), namely Athena having an owl for a familiar and the story of Hephaestus' chair for Hera. I like that the show is educating its viewers on mythical figures' histories rather than just using them cheaply like "Look, it's that scary snake woman who turns people to stone! Hey, did you know there's a god of blacksmiths?" *20)* Percy telling Annabeth (or reminding her?) that he wanted her on the quest because she would sacrifice him if necessary. *21)* Hephaestus' chair presenting a different obstacle for getting the shield back. Like I said about the previous episode, I like that the plot is largely the same but how they get from plot point to plot point is very different. I don't remember what the Fates' appearance amounted to in the book, but Percy considering what they prophesised (along with the wording of the Oracle's prophecy in Episode 4) make him seem more attentive and intelligent (though that makes me wonder if Annabeth should have been the one to keep track of details and make these points; we haven't seen much ADHD from this Percy). These are things that I would be considering in his place. Also, it's much cheaper than a horde of CGI mechanical spiders. *22)* Hephaestus looking like an 'inventor' archetype, complete with spectacles, a walking stuck -(both of which he wouldn't need cos he's a god)- and a marvellous grey beard. *23)* Annabeth's conversation with Hephaestus. Once more, no notes. I'm confident this will be my favourite episode. By the way, I was totally expecting Annabeth to free Percy by studying the mechanism and working out how to reverse the process, and then Hephaestus would come out and go "Finally, someone who appreciates my engineering!" and He'd make a comment about His fellow gods thinking they could just overcome the chair with their almighty power, but the two of them talking and Annabeth winning Him over was better. *24)* Nevermind, Percy's standing up to Ares too! Looks like the Lotus Casino is next week. It's one of the few things the film did well, so it'll be interesting to see how the two adaptations compare on that front!

Splitting Grover from the other two is something that's a result of this being a TV show rather than a book. The book after all is first person so if a character isn't around Percy...we don't really get to see anything they do. But here, Grover can actually be doing something, actually have lines, yet be no where near Percy.

ADHD brain with an incoming essay, sorry // The way Annabeth and Percy are written in this episode is beautiful. Annabeth's attitude towards Athena is sadly common amongst kids from toxic family systems. You don't realize that needing to beg for or jump through hoops to get attention and love isn't normal, so you just stay stuck in that pattern of giving too much emotional energy to a relationship that's severely lopsided. It often takes an outside example to put things into perspective for you so that you can not only break the cycle but also realize that there is a cycle to be broken in the first place. Percy's repeated efforts to sacrifice himself for Annabeth without expecting anything in return shows her the reality of unconditional love and helps her understand that whatever she has going on with her mom (and by extension, the gods) is neither normal nor acceptable, and that she doesn't have to keep acting like it is (to quote the Matilda musical "if you always take it on the chin and wear it, nothing will change"). So as hilarious as the "What Is Love" jumpscare is, it actually fits the theme of this episode quite well. The protagonist of the song is begging for his love not to hurt him anymore, because real love isn't about hurting people nor should it be. Hephaestus figures that out and I think tests Percy and Annabeth to see if they're wise enough to come to the same conclusion. They pass, obviously, hence why he frees Percy from the chair. Hephaestus' attitude also sets him up as a foil to Ares, who by contrast revels in his family's toxic behavior while Hephaestus is seeking to break away from it. Then there's the double foiling of Percy to Luke. The whole season so far has had a recurring theme of breaking the cycle of generational trauma lest you become the thing that hurt you. Medusa even says "we are not our parents" in ep 3, but then ironically becomes a monster anyway after choosing to use her trauma as a justification to hurt people. Luke, assuming they follow the book storyline, is going to do the same - hurting Percy as a result of his resentment towards his father. The way the narrative is framing Percy, however, places him the position of being the antithesis to all that - someone also hurt by the gods' bs but who chooses to be better instead of stooping to the same kind of behavior. This is what makes him a hero, not the glory that Luke described in ep 2, but the willingess to be selfless and compassionate to those who need him. It's a lesson Sally obviously taught him, making her too the hero of the story. (Unnecessary sidenote, I keep thinking of Fringe - best scifi show ever - where one of the main characters Peter struggles with reconciling with his father, who wasn't an entirely good person in the past. "Be a better man than your father" is a recurring quote on the show because of that, and every time I watch PJO now I'm reminded of it. It also reminds me of the contrast between Uther and Arthur on Merlin but if I start talking about that I'll write another 5 pages so I'll stop now 😂). TL;DR the writing in this show is honestly really smart. If you pay close enough attention, everything is thematically connected, even the plot changes.

The inclusion of the Hera chair was better than the trap used in the book. It's something noted to be too dangerous for any other God to defeat, while the book used spiders which seemed oddly targeted to Athena and not Ares and Aphrodite. Though I suppose it was meant more to humiliate in the book where this was much more vicious a retaliation. Especially when it's shown he built the entire water park specifically to lure them there to get one of them in the chair. Not sure how I feel about cutting out the live feed to Olympus and Aphrodite's scarf being there too though. Hephaestus himself making an appearance was also a great touch.

One of my favorite parts of this episode is that Hephaestus is the first god we see who responds to Percy and Annabeth’s heart and will to break the cycle. He is the first sign that the gods may listen to them and may be willing to change. Sure Poseidon saves his son from falling from the arch but I separate Percy’s dad from the other gods because they’re two different types of relationships in this story. I think this also reflects further on Hephaestus’ story in that he wanted to be loved by his family so he captures the goddess of love and they do everything except love or accept him. They give him a prize to appease him and free Aphrodite instead of trying to be better. Annabeth fulfills how he wishes that story went.

I totally get what you mean about this series being a second version of Percy Jackson at 8:55!! While watching the episode, I felt as if Rick Riordan adapted this series for a 2020s audience, rather than keeping the time period in the mid 2000s. I think it's a refreshing change! He has kept the same story beats, but made it more connected with our current world and for a new generation who can grow up with Percy Jackson. The changes are so fresh! In the sequel series, or maybe the Last Olympian book,I haven't read them in a while, Annabeth said to Percy that she always had feelings for him, but in the beginning, just mainly found him annoying. After that first quest, she started to warm up to him. And Percy's internal monologue always said how he admired Annabeth throughout the books. It wasn't always romantic, but there also wasn't a definite shift in him realizing it. I think this episode foreshadows that a bit. They're clearly friends, and they clearly like each other. In the book, he was more or less mortified that he had to go in the tunnel of love with her, but did so anyway, and had a good time... up until the spiders came out. In book three he meets Aphrodite. She keeps shifting her appearance to be more attractive to people. Percy realized that by the end of that conversation, she looked like Annabeth. That's pretty much when he knew he had feelings for her, but his thought process about her didn't change one bit. He just had the goddess of lover herself to confirm his crush and he went from there.

Girlie, you are having ALL my thoughts about the show, I love it!! *Rest contains spoilers* Don't worry about the convo with Luke, in the sneak peak at the end of the credits, they've got a little crystal/rainbow action going on, so you know they're IM'ing. Episode 5 has been my favourite so far, it's absolutely brilliant. I love the change of Annabeth seeing the fates instead of Percy, it makes so much more sense, I love Grover having his Nancy Drew moment, and I LOVE Timothy Omundsun's glorious beard (shoutout the Supernatural boys who practically worship that thing). The only concern I have about the show is Gabe. Like, is he too funny, and is his relationship with Sally too balanced (like with the way she raised her voice to him, which she NEVER would have done in the books) for us to be, if not vindicated or happy, but at least okay with him being murdered?? I wouldn't be surprised at this point if they change that, and instead when Sally gets back, she just decides to leave him. Go Queen and all that, but at the same time, where's she gonna get the money to go back to school if not The Poker Player?

Thank you SO much for your take on the Hephaestus scene. I wasn't too happy with how that was resolved at first and would've loved for Annabeth to get Percy out with her brains (may have set up her fatal flaw, too), but you make a great point about her saving him with her heart instead. I loved the episode and I LOVE how the script is treating Grover so far! Nobody needs another Ron Weasley debacle. Also not you complaining about having to cry twice in a row and then springing that edit on us 😭

I was a little upset about the throne scene not including the spiders like the book because I was worried that it didn't show Annabeth's fear--and therefore her weakness--for spiders, but you gave me a new perspective on things. She did show her vulnerable side by refusing to be like the gods in front of a god, and I love the concept of Rick looking back on the things he would change in the books. Also, the dam joke at the end made me laugh!

I love what they've doing with the show so far. It stays true to the books that a vast majority of us (myself included) read when we were younger and yet still gives us a new story that we can enjoy without it feeling like it was just copied and pasted from the books

I love your thoughts on these episodes because if I’m at all skeptical about a change (which i’m not really) you put it in such a good perspective and explain your thoughts on how this could be a good way to add on to the books. I think it’s really good to hear differing opinions from fans because I’ve been getting too into my head about the show. Worrying that “oh no people are gonna hate this cause it’s not exactly what happened in the book” or “that one specific line delivery wasn’t stellar” and the even small critiques turn into huge grievances! Too often the negative over powers the good and Personally I really want this show to succeed because I desperately need a season 2.

I (a person who has read the books) was watching this episode with my best friend (one who hasn’t read them yet) and eating spaghetti (our favorite meal). When Annabeth said seaweed brain I nearly choked! I had a whole mouthful of spaghetti and she dropped it so fast I had to pause and make sure I wasn’t dying. My dear friend was slightly worried for me until I mumbled out that she said seaweed brain and he understood. (We’re both loving the show so far btw and can’t wait for tonight’s episode)

First, the generational trauma edit was soooo so good! Please put it on every platform so I can so shamelessly share it over and over 🥹! Also, the tunnel of love ride was amazing in the show, I honestly prefer it to the book because it really highlights how hurt Hephaestus has been by the people that are ‘supposed’ to love him. Like his story is actually so tragic from start to finish that I completely understand why he would side with the half-bloods and even the comical song lyrics just really gut you when you think about them in context of his story he’s telling 😢🖤

I love what they did with the Tunnel of Love scene and how they added another piece of Greek mythology adding the gold chair that was for Hera. I also liked the song that played. When it came on, I laughed because it was so awkward to Percy and Annabeth but realy cute at the same time. I've watched this episode so many times. I can't wait to see the Lotus Casino. I'm hoping we'll get a subtle look of Nico and Bianca.

The only times they've ever used a song in these episodes is to hint any themes and message it had and take it to context of what's happening in the show. And I'm someone who puts on the subtitles so even though I dont have any idea what Olivia Rodrigo's song 'logical' was but the lyrics gave away what Sally felt about in the first episode. In the same way, I know it was comedic of them suddenly blasting "What is Love" and I laughed for a short while until I saw the images and then they kept repeating the song and my jaw just dropped. Very impressive. And then I feel like I was holding my breath for the Percabeth scenes as well. I don't think I could've praised the writing for this episode and the acting.

I feel like you're the only person on board with me for this ride. No one that I know, except for my best friend, has read the books and loves them as much as I do, and the rest of the people that are watching the show alongside with me are more casual watchers. My best friend HATES everything that they're doing, but a lot of her criticism is coming from a defense of the source material, which I understand and can empathize with because the OG Percy Jackson will forever be the best way to consume the story unedited. However, these changes that they are making, while confusing at times, I don't feel like subtract anything from the experience, and it's making this its own way to consume the story like you mentioned. What they are moving around still feels like it belongs, they are changing the focus of scenes in the book to give them a twist. This was the biggest departure from the source material, so I wanted to know how other people felt about it, and I think your wonderful edit made me realize what they're focusing on in this show. The story of child neglect, of family trauma and generational pain is still very present here as it was in the books. The way that they are wanting to change how demigods are treated, how Percy is the link that will break that chain of damage that never stopped happening, it's so beautiful and true to Percy Jackson. The only thing I need is just more sass xD I want Percy Jackson, king of sass in full show eventually, that will come with time and growth from these actors and writers I believe.

I love watching your perspectives on these shows. I feel like it's a great way to open my eyes to things that I missed and/or give me an alternative viewpoint on things I was unsure on! I will admit that I hope they add some part showing annabeths fear of spiders cause I always like that side of her character. I think showing that a character as strong and willful as her can still be scared is wonderful, and the payoff of her overcoming that fear if they make it to the "Heros of Olympus" series is much better when youve seen fear since the beginning! Slight spoiler ⚠️: Lastly, I think the show is doing a much better job at highlighting Percy's and Annabeths fatal flaws! I feel like they are really trying to hint that Annabeth struggles with Hubris, and Percy is overly loyal to his friends, which I think will pay off in a big way if this series continues!!

I've seen a lot of book readers upset that the spiders weren't included because it's such a major part of annabeth's character and tho I agree it's a massive part of her, it's not where her fear begins. Arachnophobia is inherent to basically all children of Athena and I have no doubt they'd explore this later on in maybe a later season. Right now they're establishing character relationships and dynamics, as much as shows are longer than movies, they still do need to do a little bit of condensing and this is a new opportunity for Rick to update a story released nearly 20 years ago. I'm excited for the future. Also just saw somewhere that someone said they'll still explore annabeth's fear of spiders in a future season? Tho not sure how legit it is but i have faith
