Spending time with Moor Hens in the quite of the water on the rivers of South Africa , watching them paddle along while flicking the two white patches of their tales as they glide along the water , is nothing short of Heavenly I found a patch where they had nested by stringing a few lilies together or reeds and making some sort of woven structure that constituted a fixed position nest on the water I timed the hatching of their eggs And low and behold I got to see their chicks basically eye to eye due to an unpredictable calamity Of the best days of my life ... i am eternally Grateful ...
+BreakingLimits//SickJamButter Just go to Keynes pond at Kent uni. He always runs over to me as he recognises me. If you start throwing bread to the birds he will run over as soon as he sees you. He is usually either outside the cafe eating dropped food (which is why he is fatter than the other moorhens), or he round the other side of the pond (he will come running if he thinks there is food). I do not know where he sleeps at night (he doesn't show up on rainy days) It can't be far away as moorhens can't fly very well.
at my pond they will walk right up to you. one of them kept coming over to me, i'd give him food and he'd run to his babies on the shore and then return back to me again. i was helping him feed his chicks
Don't feed them bread. Please. It is bad enough for our systems, highly processed, stripped of all goodness, with artificial supplements added. It weakens our guts and acts as glue (source: The Dark Side of Wheat by Sayer Ji). With birds, the effect of the glue is more immediate, and the bloating more severe. Couldn't agree more with Dani Donnelly's comments below.
Wild chilli (Capsicum annuum, Capsicum chinense, Capsicum baccatum, etc.....) bear small red , extremely hot fruits wich are intendet to be eaten by birds and the seeds to be excreted elswhere as a method of seed propagation. To prevent any unwanted destruction by undesirable animals like rodents, it evolved the hot substance capsacine. Birds make the best far distance propagators, and they don't have receptors for capsacine. So no problem for the moor hen, you won`t get any reaction. But i know what you whant to say, those arrogant animal activists with made believe eating disorders really suck !
agree. Bread should not be fed to birds, or fish for that matter. Percy is cute though. We have a family of moorhens and the male eats mealworms from my hand.
