Back at it again in rural Michigan for the Polar Expre- I mean legally distinct North Pole Express. Pere Marquette 1225 is back in action after being down for repairs last Christmas, so it was good to see it steaming on the old Ann Arbor mainline once again. 1225 was sporting new wheels and a new (and very bright) dual beam headlight. I was there on December 17th, so this was the last day for the event. I first see the train at the Main Street crossing where the popular Robbins Furniture shot is. I was too late given the photo line for the shot was filled, but I made do on the other side of the street. I then went to King Road which is one of the few curve shots on the route, and lastly Roosevelt Road which has a slight curve and small trestle over a ditch making for some neat shot opportunities. I wasn't able to see it arrive in Ashley but I got them backing up after they unloaded passengers. I focused on stationary shots in Ashley until Santa Claus showed up. Finally I saw the train heading back to Owosso with PNLX 57 leading it through Bannister. Next year I'll have to catch the train arriving into Owosso since I haven't done that yet. I almost didn't make the trip to Owosso given I was still recovering from a cold and the weather wasn't looking great with rain throughout the day. Despite that, I managed to have a good time. Thanks to the Steam Railroading Institute for another great Christmas with 1225!

Imma be that guy. The fact that Warner Brothers won’t let 1225 use the Polar Express name and paint scheme when other railroads and museums can even though it’s the genuine article is a tragedy. Same goes for the Castle Class that was in Harry Potter.

3:09 the camera shook! That just shows the power of this locomotive. It’s an astonishing 250,000 pounds just the locomotive itself. I love being able to see my favorite train on camera and I hope to see it in person next year!

“Legally distinct North Pole Express” hits harder than it should considering 1225 ran with “Polar Express” lettering for over a year until the movie company told them to stop

Honestly the fact that WB won’t let 1225 run the name even though it is a credited star in the movie is a tragedy. While I love what WMSR 1309 has done with the name. 1225 deserves to be called the Polar Express the most

I'm a little confused myself...The 1225 ran with the name from day one, (as far as I know), then, anybody with Steam or Diesel powered trips saw the success that SRI had and copied it !?! Trademark infringement ??? Probably, but how do you copy write a "term" rather than a business or trade product?

This may be a hot take, but I prefer 1225 with Sierra Railway no. 3's whistle, rather than her actual whistle. It just sounds a lot nicer in my opinion. Also it's cool to see the MITrain gallery cars and ex Amtrak Hi-levels kicking around on the SRI.
@railsandracing
@railsandracing 7 месяцев назад
I really liked how her whistle sounded from the late 90s through 2008. I would like to hear her sound that way again. It also would be cool if one of these days she could carry a Lima 5 Chime as a guest whistle.
@justinyoung109
@justinyoung109 7 месяцев назад
I actually agree to an extent.
@cowcatcherstudios5759
@cowcatcherstudios5759 7 месяцев назад
The reason that 1225's whistle sounds like soggy garbage is because the whistle must be fouled in some way, it's meant to be a 6 chine and I put a recording of in in a spectrogram, it only plays 3 chime. It's a Nathan 3 chime lmao
@amtrakpepsiproduct1605
@amtrakpepsiproduct1605 7 месяцев назад
@cowcatcherstudios5759 I mean, it doesn't sound horrible, it's just not very fitting for an engine like 1225 IMO. I've also watched the Polar Express so many times, so I'm a little used to Sirrea railway no. 3's whistle I think.
@railsandracing
@railsandracing 7 месяцев назад
@@amtrakpepsiproduct1605 I agree that it doesn't sound horrible. In fact, it sounds almost exactly like how the 765's whistle sounded from her first restoration in 1979 until 1983. I've also heard some recordings of Nathan 6 Chimes from the late 50s that sound similar to how the 1225 sounds today.

But it never ran in 2022 due to a big rebuild and two diesel had to pull it one of those being PNLX 57 which used to serve with commuter railroad MARC and it is a GP40WH-2 first built for Penn Central as a typical GP40 in 1968 first numbered as 3138 then into Conrail but bought by KCS in 1985 renumbered to 766 and painted in the Ghost Gray scheme until 1991 when MARC bought the unit and rebuilt it to a GP40WH-2 renumbered to is current number 57 Repainted to the MARC Colors and served Commuter Trains into the 90s the 2000s and 2010s until MARC retired the unit in 2014 and sold it to Motive Power Industries and stored in Columbia, PA with her 4 sister units that being MARC 54, 56 and 58 until PNLX bought the ex MARC Unit in 2020 repainting it to the current Orange and Black scheme and moved to Michigan on a CSX Train alongside with PNLX ex Western Maryland SD40-2 7471 which was restored in it's classic WM Colors.

How "cool"would it be to have the Marketing GM's at CN / GTW relax their "sphincter" muscles and allow 1225 to pull a trip-or-two over the Holly sub. pulling SRI's manifest? I mean how hard is that? You, (1225), pull out of Detroit, run to Durand, (like in the old days), and wye it back to Detroit on a week-end? I'm not sure, but the Holly sub. "ain't" exactly the Northeast corridor and with the demise of the GM Pontiac plant IN Pontiac MI...what else are ya'll hauling except groceries. Your thoughts?
@1chuck96
@1chuck96 6 месяцев назад
MAN !!! I got to tell you, (as if you haven't noticed) your rail and roadbed is looking a "little" thin and with all the trips ya'll pull throughout the year...it'd be a SERIOUS tragedy if the '25 split a switch, or turned a rail over and the whole thing rolled over into a ditch. I love 1225 / 765 and don't want to see anything happen to her or the people who ride behind her. Your thoughts?

I have a love-hate relationship with steam engines. I think they’re gorgeous and a piece of history worth preserving, but I also think they shouldn’t be in service anymore for environmental reasons.
@kristoffermangila
@kristoffermangila 7 месяцев назад
Well, there's one way steam locomotives can cut down on emissions - convert them to burn oil, specifically used vegetable oil. #FEC148 (owned by US Sugar Corporation in Clewiston, Florida) has been using used vegetable oil from diners in the surrounding area for a few years now.

@@Mxulinyou're right! This is a classic design by the Advisory Mechanical Commitee and built by Lima Locomotive Works for the railroads associated with the Van Sweringen brothers. There might some minor details that differentiate #1225 to #765 and #2716, but overall, this locomotive is a classic AMC Berkshire.
