People complain about the size but to a soldier who carries his gear plus a lot of unit gear and ammo it makes sense. It may also make sense for a dad who has to carry gear for the rest of his family on a trip. Also I don't think those canteen pockets are really for canteens but will fit the buttstock of a rifle or the ends of any other long gear with it secured by the side webbing or behind the side pouches.

On average Dutch men are tall. The gear is often for tall and big Dutch soldiers. It is mostly used by Dutch green barret (commandos) Marines or airborne units who often do not get a supply for longer times. I am 6.5ft myself and need that space.

Great channel love the honest reviews and videos. I know it's an older episode but I will leave this comment anyway. LOL. I have the Lowe Alpine Saracen (same pack but built by the Lowe Alpine company) and it is a perfect moose hunting pack. It can handle massive moose chunks comfortably. It's easily the most supportive and comfortable pack I have owned. I have had this pack now for about 8 years and have used it for all types of hunting (moose, mtn goat, deer, etc). Great pack!

Great Video Luke. The european armies don't have fleets of hellies to call up and move them from A to B, so you are expected to hump all your gear by foot over long distances. I used to regularly carry loads that I struggled to pick up by hand, having to sit down to put the pack on. It's amazing how much personal and squad kit can weigh when you are deployed. I'm 5' 8" and of slim build but I could carry some serious weight on my back back then. I haven't carried loads like that since my early 30's when I left the reserve service. I just bought one of these bags for my winter wild hammock camping where my sleep system is quite bulky. I prefer not to use down as it triggers my allergies so all my insulation is synthetic and quite bulky as a result.

I have had this pack for years. For the mountain hunter, it is great. Awesome bloody ruck. It's 8 lbs on my scale which isn't light but for the sheep , elk, and moose hunters its a lot of goodness.

I tend to take a lot of stuff so I'd love this pack. Of course you don't have to fill it up. Just strap the flap down a little lower and cinch down the compression straps a little tighter. Nice to have the room if needed. I'll look at the medium pack as well. The choice would be easier if I could see them in person and handle them.

110 liters is huge.. But I have read that here in The Netherlands the Dutch combat outfit for jungle warfare, including clothing, backpack, water, vests, weapons and ammo, is around 73kg/146lbs. Our commando's and marines carry even more, up to 80kg/160lbs.

Guy´s, there is a medium pack available very similar in design to this one. But at 80 litres more useable to the average guy.Luke´s review of the so called medium pack was wrong in that it featured the small grab bag (assault) style backpack.Just google Lowe Alpine Sting and you´ll find the actual medium dutch army backpack.I own a small and medium and love them to bits.

Way too large for most people, but absolutely bomb proof. Might be OK for a big guy willing to carry more than his fair share of the kit for a group trip, but with the detachable pouches, weight can also be offloaded onto others, as well.

Cool pack. It's European and has lots of MOLLE, even on the huge side pouches Euro militaries love to put as zippered attachment storage pouches on their military rucks ( for some reason, it seems most Euro military rucks, while many are cool, don't put MOLLE on their rucks. IDK why, it's such a great feature that adds so much flexibility and organization so you aren't forced to dig around a big ruck for some important item(s) you need, often urgently and now. The vertical MOLLE has always seemed confusing to me. This ruck and the "where's da liquor" ruck in use with the military of Finnland are some of the only Euro military rucks that make use of this very useful feature that you'd think would be standard on military rucks ). They also put some organizational pouches inside ( could use more IMO, I like a lot of organization as well as the ability to have a lot of stuff. I pack heavy). As big as this ruck is and you can have tons of whatever you want right with you at all times, I still don't like using the sternum and waist belts, even on large and heavy rucks like the ILBE with assault pack and making full use of the lots of MOLLE. The sternum belt gets in the way of the plate carrier's pouches and the waist belt gets in the way of the pistol belt. With all of the straps and buckles, it would probably be easy to attach an assault pack of some kind to it. Do you think the ILBE assault pack would work?

I read an articel about a US Airborn sergeant in Europe who did the Dutch red barets basic training (and earned the Dutch red baret). His mentioned that the biggest stuggle of the 16 weeks for him was to keep up with the Dutch with this rugsack because it was to large and heavy for him. Most Dutch mall are over 6 feet so he had a hard time during marches.

IDK why people say it's too big. When a ruck holds a lot of gear, it'll hold any amount in between. I'd like to add more MOLLE all round, even all round and on top of the pouches. I found a website that sells huge MOLLE panels with tons of rows of tons of loops for 6-7 U.S. (originally intended for the backs of car seats. Any ruck like this, I would take to a seamstress with a diagram of what I want and where and how, telling her I want the surplus webbing back, as each will easily cover several huge rucks with additional surplus for more customization the way I want it. Already customized a Fox Advanced 3 day assault pack with this, adding more rows of more loops to it's front and customizing it so the front clam shells open [secured at the top with lots of really strong Velcro and buckles] and adding a bunch to the front of the big "stuff pocket. I would use the sleep gear pocket to carry more gear and lash the compression sacks with my sleeping bag and pad, and my ICS tunnel tent on the bottom of the ruck like I always do. I wonder if they make an assault pack that would fit this ( like on the ILBE, my favorite. Looking for a complete Recon ILBE set, or at least the recon assault pack and MOLLE tails [ 1 for the regular ILBE and 1 for the Recon ILBE]. I bought a regular MARPAT ILBE for 150 U.S. and had to buy the assault pack for $60 U.S. and find a radio pouch. It was only 10 U.S., but I think when you buy a gear system like that it should be complete, 150 is expensive enough to get he whole thing ). Had to buy my own hydration bladders, which is better since I got a pair of Camel Back Antidotes and upgraded to Camel Back Cruxs and rigged a carrier to it, giving me 200 ounces per day but a gear system should come with every bit of it
@cthulhu6697
@cthulhu6697 4 года назад
+TOGR Of course I'd rather have this ruck, but what do you think of the huge Belgian military ruck with "jigsaw" camo (I think the 97? ). I've found the Belgians for $65, which good because this Dutch ruck is huge, it is a ( Lowe Alpine Saracen ) and Verusteleka has them for $128, but I can't justify spending $130 for a another ruck right now. Of course, whatever I get, I'm going to buy some MOLLE webbing, make into the number and size loops I want (including the huge Belgian ruck ; want more MOLLE as you show here. On Verustleleka yon can get with or without the MOLLE on the top, no choice, side pouches and I want more MOLLE on side pouches top pocket, and main field of front MOLLE ). Since the Belgian jigsaw (M97) hasn't any MOLLE on it I'm going to buy some webbing, take it to Seamstress, and have her put as much MOLL as I want on everywhere I want ). Could you do a review of the giant, Belgian, "jigsaw" ruck?' I looked everywhere on your channel and couldn't find it. No reviwer shaws the inside of main ruck, just the size, side pockets zipping into an assault pack, etc....... They don't even show the interior of the pockets and lid pockets. I trust your opinion because I think you produce the best reviews ( I'm a long time subscriber ) Thanks

This is a further development of the Lowe Alpine Saracen 120 liter. It has some extra features.The main difference is the waterproofness, that`s better than the LA Saracen. Then the zippers for the daypacks, as they are called, zip closed downwards instead of upwards in the original. That way it can`t unzip itself when loaded. The waistbuckle is different from the LA Saracen. MvD means Ministerie van Defensie (MoD).

I've had two of these and I have to say that it's really, really good pack. I unfortunetely sold my first one but now that I've had two, I can offer some advice. When buying this one you might be careful. There is variance between the packs so if you want to buy one, consider that. For example the small zip in the hood may or may not have a pouch behind it. Also you may or may not get one with compression straps on the sides. If you don't get those, you have to solve the compression problem somehow if you are not having the full load. Without compression it is a bit wiggly. Also in the belt you may or may not get a one with webbing for the pouches and the side pounches may or may not have the shoulder straps. What I had to do is to make a lumbar support because with heavier loads (40 kg or so) the pack does slide down even you have the belt set correctly and tightened to insane levels. On the other hand, if the pack doesn't fit your back, you can pull out the support struts and you can bend them to your liking. Takes some effort and trial and error but once you get it to fit you properly, it's insanely confortable pack.

Hi Luke, Just wondered if you still have the pack. If so I would be happy to take it off you, if you would like to sell it to me. I will cover the shipping too. Be lucky buddy. Bex from bexbugoutsurvivor YT channel.

First of all... Most guys in this comment section makes me facepalm... Dutch Lowe alpine Saracen is 110L WITH the side pouches. It's a modded version of the Berghaus Crusader. Main compartment is only 90L and each side pouch = 10L. It's not " BIG because DUTCH ARE TALL " lol... Fucking makes me laugh. It's very normal sized hiking rucksack for longer hikes. Yes you can extend it out to 150L if you want, the head moves up that far. This is not bigger nor heavier than Berghaus rucksacks, in fact, it's lighter than most Berghaus...
