Everyone likes to dump on Microsoft for being useless for the past decade, the fools don't realize they were the real MVP in the industry all along, at least as far as proper emulation and game preservation is concerned.
N64 emulation isn't even perfect on PC. Perfect Dark have been compiled for PC in 2024 to run natively and Nintendo should have done the same and added online so it worked properly.
Emulation will always be a tricky beast. I don't fault Nintendo for having a few errors that would require an entire rewrite of the game's code, but it shouldn't be running worse than the original hardware.
@@killallgames Yeah. Running N64 natively is the new trend on PC now. It's like night and day vs emulation. Perfect Dark and Zelda MM were among the first. The legendary Superman 64 is ported to PC too of course...
They gotta do something about controls in these games too. I had to remap 2 single horizontal joycons so that they could be held vertically, then use the control options in game that allow you to use 2 n64 controllers so you can have 2 sticks. It took me like an hour to come up with that nonsense and it makes perfect dark and 007 a million times more playable but like.. they couldnt do ANYTHING? Its playable with two sticks and modern controls, freaking implement it
Following in the footsteps of Goldeneye 007, guess Nintendo doesn't know how to properly do emulation. Also doesn't help that they recently took down that Rom site.
They didn't take that rom site down, the rom site got rid of most Nintendo roms "Mainly Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon etc) Also the rom takedown was allegedly done by copyright trolls and not actually Nintendo themselves.
Weird how Goldeneye 007 and Perfect Dark worked better on the Xbox consoles than this, at least in terms of the emulation or remastered side of things.
Perfect Dark were recompiled for PC to run natively and released in 2024. Even 1000 FPS won't break the game. There have also been PC versions with full screen online for each player. If random PC gamers can do this, Nintendo sure can.
@@roboguy75 Microsoft is a software company and Nintendo is a gaming company. That's why Microsoft also nailed Xbox 360 emulation on first try. Sony's emulators is known to be as bad as Nintendo ones for the same reasons.
Honestly, I've been playing PD on NSO since it came out. Been fine for me. Some very minor complaints, but i have faith Nintendo will patch them out and nothing thats game breaking. And ive pretty much %100'd it minus the last 3 challenges and 3 of the shooting range golds. But Im also playing it directly on the switch w/the n64 controller (not plugged into a tv) so the latency really hasnt been bad
I do wonder if the latency is slightly better in portable mode. At any rate, if you’re not sensitive to any of the issues, then that’s great. I still think Nintendo should be taking more care when putting these games on its service, though.
Yeah the things people say are unplayable these days are very much the most minor of minor of issues. Literally if you don't look at youtube videos you'd barely notice a single problem at all, youtubers just highlight the smallest of problems to absolute 200% over the top exaggeration and people just go yeah absolutely I can't play it. Meanwhile I played through it just fine and had a great time haha.
50 dollars a year for emulation that is put to shame by my cheap laptop from college 10+ years ago. *Official Nintendo seal of quality.* Like, I remember Perfect Dark being a hard to emulate game back when I first tried emulation, but that was in the late 2000's
Why doesn't Nintendo just hire the people who do a better job than Nintendo? I've never understood that part. Sure, I understand blocking unauthorized releases, but if those unauthorized releases are high quality then just hire them to do it for Nintendo.
4:26 Microsoft actually tried to fix the Xbox 360 emulator with updates. Minor bugs in emulating Viva Piñata were fixed. The gray screen glitch when entering the garden due to a bug in emulating the game on Xbox One was fixed in an update, making it match the Xbox 360 game more.
legit thought about upgrading my sub to include the n64 stuff, but its just been disappointment after disappointment of how badly the games i wanted to upgrade for have been handled
Honestly if Microsoft released Perfect dark for pc I'd buy it in a heartbeat and I'd actually pay AAA price for it, the soul in that game and the multi-player is irreplaceable
It’s honestly among some of the greatest games ever made, even compared to today. Such love and care was into perfect dark, and is rare’s greatest achievement.
Man, cases like this sure make you wish an entire community well versed in emulation and decompiling existed that nintendo could reach out to in order to improve their products. But I guess that's a pretty silly thought, right?
It’s insane how Nintendo absolutely hates and despises their own history and wants to punish anyone who wants something old instead of buying the newest latest and greatest.
My personal rule for emulation. Can I get it brand new, in box, at a reasonable price from original manufacturer? If not, then it's emulation all day. Example: An NES game to download for 5 dollars is NOT a reasonable price. That's my personal rule and I don't care what anyone else thinks of it.
I still have this for N64 and the Xbox 360 HD remaster. The N64 version works with the official wireless controller and a Bitfunx wireless controller receiver, with no detectable input lag. The version Microsoft released over a decade ago...also no input lag on an Xbox Model X! So it's quite impressive Nintendo manages to screw up the game that they're renting out for a monthly fee, a game which originally came out on their own console.
Nintendo has always been bad at emulating older games. Their pilot wings 64 on the nintendo online is still broken and is impossible to 100% because the 60fps ruined the controlls on the wing diving events because the controll is locked to the framerate. So you cannot dive in a perfect 90% angle instantly.
Sony also failed with emulating older games. Some graphical errors were found on PS2 games emulated on PS4. Same thing with PS1 games emulated on PS4/5 and the new batch of PS2 emulated games. They even had their own Pilotwings 64 style emulation glitch where using Dragoon magic in Legend of Dragoon could cause the game to softlock and become unplayable requiring the game to be reloaded. At least I think they fixed that, unlike Nintendo with Pilotwings 64.
Nintendo’s inexcusable lack of quality control regarding their N64 emulation is a big part of why I’m somewhat concerned with their enormous financial success. During the Wii U era, while iQue’s N64 emulator was pretty terrible, it could be argued that during that rough era Nintendo didn’t have the resources to overhaul/replace the emulator into something more acceptable. Now that Nintendo is enjoying record-breaking financial success, it’s disheartening to see that they’re fine with drip feeding games to a broken emulator that they expect customers to pay a subscription fee for. It proves to me that with nearly unlimited resources, Nintendo is content with doing as little as possible to make as much profit as possible, and I fear that Nintendo’s piles of money will cushion them many similar blunders like this to come.
Playing GoldenEye and Perfect Dark makes me sad now. While the single player campaigns is still enjoyable the majority of the fun came from the local multiplayer with friends. Friends that are long gone and I am reminded of that fact every time I play.
I find Nintendo’s philosophy on this subject highly puzzling. That’s mostly due to ignorance, I can only speculate from my position. What I don’t get is why Nintendo doesn’t fight back against illicit ROMs by mastering emulation or offering a better alternative? If they don’t think it’s profitable enough to do it right then why are they so threatened by third parties doing it non-commercially? It feels very much like twisted corporate logic. You will play old games only through us, you will pay for them, they will be inferior, you better learn to like it. Their only motive seems to be turning a quick buck instead of truly investing in the opportunities afforded by modern emulation.
Community projects will likely always be "better" in the sense that they are driven by passion and endless time. Nintendo does have other games to make, but it shouldn't just throw ROMs on its service and call it a day. There needs to be more care taken.
Could have used a script editor here. First 3 minutes don’t hit on what issues you are having, just generic. Show me the lag, show and tell me the graphical issues (besides blurry sections), have the audio comparison
The focus of the video wasn't on the specific issues Perfect Dark has, but on the broader topic of how people believe older games only truly shine when they are remade.
I think the main problem is that NSO seems like corporate greed from Nintendo. Mainly because originally at the reveal of the Switch they wanted retro games to be Rental basis but quickly backed away from that Idea once everyone got Nintendo overwhelmingly negative feedback. They simply retool it as a perk for online. Which used to be free but because Microsoft then Sony got to charge it and console players accepted the norm. Nintendo did it too, and when Nintendo saw that Microsoft and Sony also gave more premium version of their online Nintendo followed with that business model, with the whole idea of keeping customers on the fear of losing everything if they stop paying and not paying to keep the archive alive. The thing is that Nintendo does have quality and resources to make improvements on their older games such as we can see with Miitopia, Luigi Mansion 2 HD, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Pikmin 1&2, Skyward Sword HD, Metroid Prime Remastered, Mario 3D All Stars, and Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon Limited US run. But they only want to go above and beyond when they need a game to make seem like there is never a drought of the latest next Nintendo title. You can tell that they only want to add games for a marketing stunt. As unless it is bargain bin from the era. Only big must have titles of the console only show up during directs or first few months of the service being revealed. As a stocking and reminded that if you like what you save upgrade today and get a collection of the past. I figured that if they truly cared about preserving the past, they would have fix all of the emulation issues that have been known about for roughly 3 years minimum and kept promises on all of their emulators that they have a new game coming to that service every month. Because a majority of missing must have titles are still known by Nintendo completely. I say this as a huge Nintendo nerd who got the Switch day one and preorder most of Nintendo games just so I can be one of the first people to get their hands on playing it. That Nintendo only want to put care into their remasters when they have data to tell them that your nostalgia is now profitable. If not then the game can one day be placed in their archives of games running on a outdated emulator, with the service disappearing when they need to focus on selling the new system.
Maybe I'm just getting old, but I really didn't notice any of these graphical errors (except the blurry sections going wacky), nor did I sense the increased input lag. And I say that as a game collector who also was playing the legit N64 version the same night as the NSO version just yesterday. While some hyper vigilant players may notice these snafus, I think most consumers won't.
5:28 Never forget the butchered Ratchet & Clank PS2 ports to PS3. Broken graphical effects galore, missing features, and game freezes are to be found in the four PS2 games released on PS3. At least they added a few skins to Up Your Arsenal in the PS3 port.
To be completely fair and clear, Nintendo Switch Online only runs proper EMULATION for the older games, therefore emulating them as accurately as they would have been in the past. Now, with that out of the way, it IS extremely difficult to get a proper control scheme for Perfect Dark on NSO. With things being as they are, I simply have to recommend the Xbox remake instead, which is the TRUE and MODERN way to enjoy Perfect Dark in all of its glory. The simple fix to this would be to Port the Xbox version over to the Switch store, but I am not going to hold my breath waiting for that to happen. Since PD remake only exists over on Xbox 360, unfortunately, that seems to be the only way to currently enjoy it, at least from my own perspective.
The Perfect Dark Xbox 360 release and Banjo-Tooie on Xbox 360 both suffer from errors in how the music is played. The pitch in both game's music is incorrect and some effects in the music are busted. Hopefully both Xbox 360 games get updates that restore the music to the original versions. Speaking of music that needs to be restored, I noticed on Twitter that Perfect Dark Zero is also missing some music due to an update in 2006. It would be good if an update restored the missing music if it wasn't due to licensing issues.
PD was my most played game on N64 when I was a kid, and I'm having a blast with the PD online version. I've played it for dozens of hours and I haven't noticed any issues. Guess I'm biased though idk
I'll say; the amount of whining I've heard about this version is pretty wild and almost everything is pretty easy to adapt to. Sure, it should absolutely be better, but I also had next to no issue completing the game on every difficulty on Switch. I own the game on Xbox, N64, have the PC decomp, etc, and believing this version is unacceptable is crazy to me when you can access a membership to play it for $10 a *year* It's... Fine, lol. I love this game and just appreciate that there's even more access to it now.
@@killallgames get 8 people on the $80 family tier and they all pay $10 each, one person just has to maintain it. That's the situation I'm in now, and it's been great.
@@grassroots15 Not everyone can do that. It also doesn't excuse the lackluster quality. In my video, I did not claim this was the worst thing ever, just that Nintendo's offering has basic errors that should be corrected. Why settle for less when Nintendo can do better>
My sentiments exactly. Anyone who thinks NSO is flat-out unacceptable is just being too picky. All *I* ask for is a playable official emulator that I can use on the go, and NSO gives me exactly that. And Winback Covert Operations. Plus, $50 a year is not expensive at all when you think about it for more than a minute.
Correct. Look at Paper Mario N64 vs NSO comparison videos and look at the graphical errors introduced in each emulation release of the game. Hint, the white fringe on the text isn't supposed to be here. There are unofficial N64 emulators that give a more accurate result than Nintendo's release.
