Looks pretty nice! The 'nostalgia graphics' factor for me sort of fades away with the N64/PS1 era- if there is an opportunity to play a game from that generation with cleaned up visuals and a proper frame rate, without all sorts of extra video signal boxes for compatibility with a 4K TV- I'm all for it.

That 360 release had modern controls added right? And some models updated. Its on Rare Replay. I think this N64 release is original assets running at higher resolution.

Hey John, I loved playing Perfect Dark on the N64. When Nintendo announced they were gonna release Perfect Dark on NSO, I felt like this was a victory because I missed playing on a Nintendo Console.

Man. The graphics look way better. I was almost going to end my yearly subscription, but now I see it is worth keeping. They are definitely starting to focus on making good games better. I think Nintendo now sees the value in some of their older games. Proof again that powerful hardware is not the only thing that makes a good game system... It's the games! :)

Nintendo had nothing to do with this. This game has been updated for a long while now on Xbox. Nintendo is the biggest money-making scam in my opinion... Xbox has tons of games for $15 a month including new releases for free!! I have bought games for switch only to realize it was for free on Xbox! Nintendo makes things so complicated these days it's like they hate their fan base. I grew up playing the original NES but about had enough of the Nintendo shananagans.

@@crtinkering7323 You guys can't understand why giving away games for free is so bad for the industry. Making a good games requires time, talent, money. The final product has to be valued if you want to reward all the people who have worked very hard to make it that good... Your greediness has already killed the cinema... what else do you want? Having that kind of mentality you're only cutting the branch you're sit on... Hope that many people will continue to buy their games the real price instead of wanting everything for free like you....

These days I play the Rare Replay version on xbox... most of my time recently has been playing my Amiga for the podcast I do (RGDS). Hoping part one and the free book will be out this fri/sat. Excited to share. Beyond that been playing ps1 and ps2 racers like Splashown 2 and Downhill Domination so much fun.

Seeing and playing it in person is MUCH better IMO. Agree that the N64 was very capable and enjoy playing on a OG console still.

I fired it up late yesterday and after getting the controls fully set (switched the sticks and 1.2 ontrols plus A set to R bumper) it was glorious! Did some challenges and the first mission a couple times. Going to dive back in here in a bit. Sooooooo excited this reached the Switch. Fist Sims versus a couple laptop guns in sentry mode is happening again! Last thing, with this Mature 17+ Switch N64 app Conker HAS to be coming.

No sure what you mean by "1.3" controls??? In Golden Eye, you want to swap sticks and use the 1.2 setting. I think that's what you mean. In "Turok," you have different options. You want to change it from "Left" to "Right" handed controls.

I actually played through perfect dark recently on an rgb modded n64 through an ossc with firebrandx profiles. Gotta say, it looked pretty damn good. I dont go back to early 3d stuff very often, but when the gameplay is good, the visuals kinda start to not really matter after a few minutes of play

Love this game on the Rare collection with modern controls. Back in the N64 days, we just didn't realize how much better it could be! Kind of surprised they did Turok. We already have the remasters for 1 and 2, with 3 incoming. Can't imagine wanting to go back to the fog with bad controls.

You can play *any* FPS on the Switch N64 app using modern controls. You need a Pro Controller. (Joy Con's aren't ideal for aiming.) Next, on the Switch, swap the left and right sticks using the remap controllers option on the Switch. In Turok, select from the options menu "Right Hand Controls." There you go. Modern FPS style controls. It takes a combination of Switch Console settings and in-game settings, but it comes out great.

@@thinkhector Thank you, I do appreciate you taking the time to explain that, but the fact you had to type all that out is the exact reason I think it's BS. nintendo should have just put in the modern controls. Period. I shouldn't have to reprogram my controller in order to make it "acceptable". That's one of my frustrations with Nintendo. But seriously, thank you for taking the time to do that.

@@JGKingCrusher Sure no problem. I know what you mean. It took me a good half hour to 45 minutes to figure it out in Turok, and imagine everyone having to waste that time. It is somewhat tricky too because even I messed up the instructions! It's switching "Right Hand" to "Left Hand" in Turok. On the plus side, it's even a small miracle this works at all. Given that we still needed the developer's to give us in game options too. You really only need TWO remaps though. If you remap for Turok, that's good for all FPS games. (The way I had GoldenEye remapped didn't work for Turok at all! But vice versa was fine.) The other game that needs remapping is Star Fox. It doesn't _need_ it but it's better if you do. Really every other game is fine. Other games control just changes with in-game options.

I think you should have compared the best N64 display option today to Switch to show the jump in graphics quality. No-one uses composite anymore, and 24 years ago we all had CRTs which is arguably the optimum way to play N64 Perfect Dark. However, I am sure Switch upped the frame rate, which is probably the biggest difference with this port.

I love GoldenEye and Perfect Dark. As a die hard GoldenEye fan, I think Perfect Dark is a better game. Perfect Dark is the multiplayer my lifelong friends and I have been playing since we were kids. It was the precursor to the free world first person shooters we see all the time today like Call of Duty. This game was a head of its time and I simply love it. I’m loving the Switch version so far and am on Challenge 19, trying to unlock all of the multiplayer stuff.

Perfect Dark was so much fun. I have never played the multiplayer because when it came out, I didn't know anyone who wanted to play. It was a bummer. I had a group of friends who used to come over to play Golden Eye mulitplayer. But I movied.

Looks good. It's hard to go back to the 64 version with the HD remaster existing but I would go back to this. Don't have the 64 controller for the Switch though.

Its the original textures. No new work was done. Running higher rez without the N64 AA that blurs everything. It looks just as good using just regular emulation on PC if you dont have a switch or pay for their nintendo online service.

This really urks me when people say stuff like "The 360 version looks better". OF COURSE IT'S GONNA LOOK BETTER AND PLAY BETTER. Microsoft made efforts to make it look and play better on the XBox 360. If Nintendo had that chance, I think they would have done the same.

Dude, I dunno what kind of connection you have for your N64 (Edit: Composite), but playing my N64 less than ten years ago on both a PAL 25" Toshiba Dolby Pro Logic CRT TV and a PAL 32" Sony Trinitron CRT TV with a standard Euro SCART connection looked leagues better than the utter mess you're showing there to represent the N64. And, while it's clear the Switch version was always going to look better, I don't think this footage is fair to the quality of visuals you can get from an N64 at all. I mean, you're showing Switch with presumably a high quality HDMI connection on a high-res modern TV as per the norm today, and you're comparing it to literally the worst possible connection and display possible on N64 it seems. Not fair. The N64 was/is capable of displaying its visuals much better than that.

PAL had a better resolution but was slower framerate, and in europe we had rgb scart cables so got the best non hdmi picture.

how anyone could actually enjoy that stuttering mess on the original n64, i don´t really get. at times even on the first level with no enemies near. it stuttered veeery bad. i have limited time with the game and remember trying co-op. and it was basically single digit. but it could have been a case of remembering it worse then it really was, but it was still really bad. like playing a picture showing..

I like the nes, super nes, Gameboys, Genesis etc. But playing these N64 games on the switch I find damn near impossible. 😂 Especially these first person shooters.

I just can't get used to the controls for Perfect Dark and Turok for the Switch. I've tried different options and remapping some of the controller functions, nothing seems to be quite right. Perfect Dark is one of my all time favorites but the Xbox 360 version is always going to be the best way to play for me. I thought the direct was awesome, obviously Metroid Prime 4 is the top of the list but Lego Horizon was the biggest surprise for me.

Agree that I think playing Perfect Dark on the 360 release is a better way to go for control. One thing that has vastly improved with modern day shooters is the control.

Try switching the L and R sticks then pick control 1.3 and see if that helps.

Bet it would look a lot closer to the Switch if the N64 was RGB or HDMI modded. I installed the PixelFX mod in mine, so it has both. No Switch online though, not yet anyway.

The main gripe I had with the N64 version of the game was framerate. That has been fixed.

@@johnhancockretro yeah it wasn’t great at times. I actually prefer goldeneye I find it more fun perfect dark is very intense and serious and I need to be in the right mood for it.
