Perfect Perspective Storytelling of Made in Abyss 

I think Nanachi specifically tends to speak to people who've gone through particularly dark stuff in their youth. The way that they're written really nails the experience of moving through the world as someone with a lot of trauma, initially seeming jaded as a mask for real vulnerability, yet ultimately resilient despite that. Reg and Riko are still great, though, with Reg simultaneously being the most physically powerful and the most emotionally earnest of the main trio, while Riko has her whole nigh-manic Pollyanna thing going on as a way of coping with the fact that she's made some incredibly heavy decisions which she cannot allow herself to regret. And of course Faputa is fascinating for her own entirely different reasons, her animalistic qualities shading seamlessly into her prouder and bubblier moments. I could go on forever about the cast, honestly. I really love Ozen and Marulk's dynamic, too, and Majikaja's odd care for others creeping through his strict and often alien set of personal values, Belaf's silent penitence over centuries, Bondrewd's… where do you even start with that piece of work? God. I will say, it's kind of jarring hearing the English dub voices, not because they're badly done at all, but because the Japanese voices are so deeply burned into my mind, especially Mariya Ise's Reg and Shiori Izawa's Nanachi. And holy cow, knowing that Miyu Tomita was barely out of high school when she played Riko in the first season and gave *that* performance in the tenth episode still blows my mind.

The thing i love about this anime is the fact that it actually makes you feel the emotion that they're showing at the moment, when they cry, it makes you sad or emotional. In other words, the feeling is transmitted in a special way

I keep fluctuating between Reg, Irumyuui, Faputa, Riko, and Vueko as my favorite Characters.

I disagree that what happens in episode 10 changes Riko's perspective. Nothing seems to have altered it so far, this is the most interesting thing about her to me.

I think Riko has a lot more going on that is central to the show than the focus gives away, especially since "eager for adventure" is such a mundane character trait in adventure anime. In Made in Abyss this eagerness plays a far more important role though. For example Riko's friends at the orphanage are meant to be the regular kids. Riko is contrasted against them as unusually driven. Later this difference is made literal through her being a zombie that was born with the built-in desire to return to the abyss. Then when she was near death during the sting incident, Riko, at her age, didn't panic but made the decisions needed to potentially allow her to continue. We see parallels of Riko's determined path in Bondrewd and Wazukyan's (and her mother obviously). They make up the various approaches to descending. Riko has already confronted and moved on from the fact she's not merely seeking her mother, as that's really a flimsy reason to go to such a dangerous place you can never return from. She just wants to go, she ENJOYS this element of the process. She's not truly thinking about the end result yet. What is interesting is when she is forced to choose between proceeding onwards or leaving friends behind, maybe even sacrificing them. So far she has always chosen to leave people behind when the sole alternative is not leaving. All this to say, she's a freaky kid and with so much in the show being insane, it's easy to overlook how scary her ambition is simply because she's kind and actually has decent empathy. It's in contrast to her environment that her ability to smile each day becomes stranger and stranger. (and that's where the parable aspect of Made in Abyss as a show about the value of living gets its juice ofc)

Good video! Brought some new things that I hadn’t thought about. My favorite character is actually Riko! She’s smart and resourceful, and is a great strategist. She takes emotional punches as they come, takes a moment to feel their weight, and then puts them aside. She doesn’t let anything get in the way of her sense of curiosity and her drive to see and experience everything she can.

Riko is my favorite character, so I especially can't stand all the Riko hate in the fandom. I love how curious she is and how she wants to learn as much as possible about the Abyss. It reminds me of being young and watching Discovery channel and Animal Planet because I just loved to learn. I love her child-like sense of wonder when observing all the gorgeous nature around her. As an adult who loves nature, I have kept that. I connect with this aspect of her character. I see myself in her. I love how intelligent she is and can not only use exact knowledge in known situations but can also apply her knowledge of the Abyss and adapt it to unfamiliar surroundings as she continues into territory there is less and less information about. I love her heart and how optimistic she is despite all the horror around her. Without her, the supposed useless member according to some people, the team would not still be going on. She keeps everyone together both literally and psychologically.

My favorite character has to be Ozen. Ozen is a really interesting character she was the best white whistle to introduce first, as she showcases what awaits those who strive to become one. The artistic choices that were made in some of the scenes or panels really paint a picture of a monster in human form, a husk of her former self. However, though monsterous in personality and visual depiction, she still has humanity, we see it in her bond with Lyza. Although in her own way, we can see that Ozen truly cared for Lyza. And finally, a polar bear emoji 🐻‍❄️

Nanachi and Vueko are my favourites because of their backstories and all what they endured 😢 2nd place is either for Prushka or Ozen 😼

You know what I realize. We don't really get internal thoughts from anyone else except for mainly Reg or other certain characters. It's rarely from Riko. So it can be assumed Riko is the main character and Reg is the vehicle for the audience. No? Ok I'll leave

Very interesting review

I kept thinking that Bondrewd was kinda retconned in the movie to not be so dislikable. Like, Bondrewd in the flashbacks seemed way more cruel and appeared that he enjoyed the suffering of the children, rather than the scientific advancement, and I believed that was because Nanachi's memories of Bondrewd are biased. Not to say he isn't a monster, but movie Bondrewd has a charisma about him that he doesn't in the anime's flashbacks.

Veco was my favorite from S2, but I do like Riko and REG. Great video, I love MiA and cant wait for more seasons/chapters.

My favorite character is, obviously Faputa. I can't exactly pin point what I love about her, to do so I would need to rewatch enterity of season two which I would love to do but can't right now. She just connects to me in a different level I don't even understand. Almost made me cry with this video bro, really good.

What's the song in the intro and outro? The one that stops at around 0:46? Thanks! It's hard to choose a favorite character in Made in Abyss because I like all of them for different reasons. Made in Abyss wouldn't work if any of the main characters were missing, which is a really good thing. Still, I pick Vueko as my favorite because I got incredibly emotionally attached to her, and also, she was key to setting the tone of the second season.

i love everyone, but faputa in particular catches my fancy because of the more feral aspects of her personality

My favorite character is Vueco, I just always found myself hoping for the best for her. I also really like Nanachi and Wazukyan. I can’t stand Riko most of the time which seems to be a hot take but I just don’t understand why she keeps going and I can’t agree with her logic.

It’s the best anime I have ever seen. And I’ve watched Madoka, AOT, Helsing, Wolf Children, etc… Those English VAs did a horrible job however, Faputa especially. Don’t watch the dub it only retracts from the impact of the characters and story.
