Perfect pitch calibration on a Mk2

Perfect pitch calibration on a Mk2 which I carry out every time. This takes into account the 'null point' so the pitch doesnt suddenly jump when coming off the quartz lock. Nice and smooth all the way through the zero point. This is why its important to have a brand new pitch installed as part of a service in order to keep this accurate. I include a brand new pitch as part of a service. If your turntables 'jump' when moving off the quartz lock then they need calibrating.
Head over to www.technics-service.co.uk for more info.

Can you help, i havea mk5, and fhe pitch feels really rough and scratchy as the guy I bought from was an audiophile and never touched the pitch 🙄 it feels, as though it needs just a bit of lubrication. I relly dont want to dimantle it. I have done before but idlike to avoid that. Ideally, would use a bit of grease on the slider carrierwith some f5 fader lube. Do you think I should, ordo you know an alterantive? Thanks. Great channel!

when you nudge the platter, how long does it take for the speed to get back to pitch? do you have any tech. measures?

i have the chance to get a mk4 at a reasonable price from a friend that only had home use,. Do you think they are worth paying extra money? , He's asking £600 but as i don't play 78s ,would a clean Mk 2 be a better option Cheers

Hi Richard, first of all I really appreciated the video, one of the few truly technical ones, and the "gem" regarding the type of slider with reduced gap in the zero zone. Given that I perfectly understand that calibrating the system with the settings indicated in the service manual, and with the appropriate tools (professional oscilloscope) is the only way to restore the original "status" of the turntable pitch. but... I ask you: what are the consequences of a calibration "by eye" without measurement, based only on the graduated scale? Or rather, what happens by increasing or decreasing the central reference frequency allowed by the manufacturer? is the pitch range simply changed (for example ±9% or ±7%, with obvious consequences on the slider response) or could there be other operating problems?

Hi. I have a problem with a pitch with my 1210 mk2. In practice the problem is the double zero. With the pitch at zero (and the LED on) it turns perfectly, when i accelerate with the pitch in the Moment that the led turns off instead of going faster, the turntable slows down to return to a new zero on a value of about +2.5. It holds the +6 and +3.3 very well, a little less the -3.3 but it is at acceptable levels. Searching on the web I found various tutorials to solve my problem, the point is that when I connect the multimeter to the pitch (obviously disconnected from the turntable) I have an X value, and going to modify the VR302 trimmer that value should modify right? To me it remains fixed and constant. The tests I have carried out are the following: I have completely replaced the pitch, putting the One of my other turntable, and it works perfectly, so I rule out problems with the motherboard or others stuffs of the turntable. With the Multimeter attached to the Brown and Red of the pitch (disconnected from the turntable) I tried to move the pitch fader and the value changes (so apparently the fader is good) but with the same configuration by acting on the vr302 the value remains fixed and constant (so apparently the vr302 doesn't work). At that point I connected the Multimeter to the vr302 and rotating it the value changes, so apparently it is good. I am also going crazy because if there was something to replace I would not know what specifically, and with the times that are running I do not want to spend more than I should. 😬 Sorry if I wrote a lot but I hope I have explained the problem well and what tests I did.

You need a frequency counter connected to TP27 and adjust VR301 until it reads 262.08kHz. Unfortunately a lot of information and videos online can be misleading. This facebook group has all the correct service manuals in the files section: facebook.com/groups/TechnicsTechTips/

Hi Richard, I'm working on a never-before serviced 1987 1200mk2 with the North American power supply. Everything inside is dirty, but never before touched! Currently have the pitch fader opened up, cleaned with contact cleaner and sprayed with new fader lube. Moves like butter! I'm planning to use this as a DJ deck and have gently removed and stored the detent bearing and spring from the fader. (I labeled the ziplock baggie for any future tech who wants to reverse the mod. A couple questions. Does the bearing need to be present for the LED to light up at 0 on the mk2? I borrowed a nice meter (a Sanwa PC-7000) from a friend. For the fader trim pot, can I adjust it before reinstalling it/reattaching the wiring harness to the control board? (Does it need to be drawing power from the turntable to be adjusted?) Finally, what is your opinion on clipping the resistor that defeats the quartz lock for DJs? I've met some oldschool guys who swear that the quartz lock makes their job 10x harder. Any thoughts?
@djrichiet
@djrichiet 7 месяцев назад
Hi, To answer your questions: 1) The fader trim pot can only be adjusted when disconnected from the main PCB. After adjusting this you must also use a proper frequency counter to calibrate VR301 to 262.08kHz as specified in the service manual. (I cannot stress this enough - a proper frequency counter must be used, multimeters are not accurate enough) 2) Do not clip any resistors to remove the quartz lock. This is a cowboy mod and is not needed as it can cause the speed to lag. Just use the correct SFDZ122N11-2 pitch. See my other vid on both mk2 pitch types for more information on the quartz lock issue.

@@djrichiet Thanks for the advice! It seemed like a cowboy mod but I didn't know enough to understand if it had a downside. Cheers! Also, my meter is a Sanwa PC7000. The site lists the frequency counting as 10Hz~200kHz | tolerance = ±(0.02%+40) | resolution = 0.001Hz. That should be accurate enough, no? Oh, 262.08 kHz is higher than its upper limit. Dang! It does have another measurement called Logic Frequency which is 5Hz~2MHz | tolerance = ±(0.002%+4) | resolution = 0.001Hz, but I don’t know if that would apply here.

Hey Richard could you help me out? I just followed 2 tutorials and it won't get the pitch control 100% accurate, even though I ve got the same values (VR301: 262.08 Hz) (VR302: 2.75ohm). Still my pitch is slightly incorrect: when, I am at - 2.5% on the pitch fader the dots in the red light are showing - 3.3% It is especially the case with the - 3.3% Because I got it straight at zero, at +3,3% and +6%. Yet - 3.3% stays incorrect. Hope you could give me a hint.
@djrichiet
@djrichiet 5 лет назад
If the dots are running slow, increase the gain on VR302 a little and then re-set VR301 each time. If they are running too fast then decrease the gain on VR302 a little. The trick is to get the 6% to line up, and the 3.3 should be within 10%.

@@djrichiet This is what I did yet the -3.3 is not there. All the other values are correct.

@leninonacid2358
@leninonacid2358 4 года назад
@@miroslawk4504 if the problem with your pitchfader is that the dots show -3.3%, while the pitchfader's position is at another point, then don't worry. This is standart with a lot of 1210ers. The technician guy of a famous technics shop in berlin told me that. As long as the + range of your fader is accurate, your pitchfader is most likley working properply.

@@leninonacid2358 Hey Lenin! I'm late to the game but I'm glad to read this. I was bout to get my multimeter and take my decks apart. I have my dots lined up perfectly at +6 , +3.3, and 0. However I also have noticed that my dots stop at -2.5 and not -3.3. I was told that the "guide" on a technics turntable under the fader isn't completely accurate...... and that YES... -2.5 (instead of -3.3) is normal behaviour. *shrugs shoulders*. My plus range is incredibly accurate.

Do you need a Analog Oscilloscope for this or can a digital one do the trick? This Tenma model is hard to find?

@djrichiet
@djrichiet 2 года назад
Its not harmful but it isnt ideal, There is no need to do this mod with the SFDZ122N11-2 pitch installed. Having the quartz lock ensures correct centre point calibration.

@@djrichiet I've just cut through the resister TP17 and cut the orange cable and it's the best thing I've ever done. No more fighting the motor. Mixing is so much easier this way. They still stay locked but when needed you can gently correct the timing using the platter and no more jogging. I would never go back now, its unleashed the full potential of these decks.

I offer this as an option when servicing turntables, however over 90% of people prefer to keep the centre click as it keeps these turntables more original.

Couldn't agree more. If you are a HI-Fi users there are plenty of other tables to choose from. if you want a 1200 you are most likely a DJ. Technics are fantastic but the early models are far from perfect for DJing. I'd way prefer a properly modified 1200 personally.
