He gets all the praise, and rightly so, but it’s also fair to give some to the rest of the band as well for patiently waiting for him to recover and adjust to his new drums rather than replacing him to try and continue riding the wave of success from their last album. A band like Guns N’ Roses would’ve replaced him immediately after the first hospital visit

Rick Allen was the baby of the band. He as only 15 when they signed their record deal. But they stood by him when he lost his arm. That's true brotherhood of a band right there.

Drummer Allen had both arms for the Pyromania Album (rock of Ages, etc) lost it in a car accident. What's interesting is it shows how tight knit this band is because when they visited him in the hospital, they had no intentions of replacing him or considering him quitting. They just asked "what do you need?" and they designed a kit that he could work with. (many left hand are now controlled with foot pedals)

All of them were doing drugs and drinking a lot of alcohol at the time of Rick's accident. When they united behind his recovery and return to the band they all, with the exception of Steve Clark the guitarist, kicked their drug and alcohol habits. When Rick was on the road to recovery he and the others then united to try and help Steve to kick his drug habit and it seemed like it worked. But after Hysteria hit it big, Steve went back to drugs when the fame and constant demands got too much for him again. Back then, clinical depression was not a thing yet. They blamed all his problems on the drugs when it was the drugs that were helping him to cope. As his depression and guilt over letting his friends down grew, he took more and more until one day he overdosed himself. He was such a great musician... he will forever be missed. RIP Steve Clark.

That and Led Zeppelin not making any more music after their drummer died instead of replacing him are some examples of loyalty and true brotherhood that many in today’s generation will never understand. Everyone is selfish and cutthroat nowadays.

After Rick lost his arm, he designed his own special drum kit to use with one arm and his feet. The fact that these guys stuck with him and kept him as the bands drummer is both a stand up comment about them and Rick's own ability as a drummer. Props to him and Def Leppard both!

Steve (long blond hair) and Phil (bare chest and short hair) were best friends and drinking buddies until Phil realized that he needed to stop drinking, which he did successfully. Steve was a hard core alcoholic and could not stop even though he went to rehab a couple of times. Phil and the band tried to help Steve, but he died from alcohol poisoning combined with prescription drugs. Phil is still with the band and is a vegan and a workout fanatic.. I love seeing people react to this band - I think someone made it 3 songs before they realized that Rick has 1 arm. He has always played barefoot, and the kit allows him to use his feet to compensate. He has the pedals programmed differently for different tracks, so he has to remember what program he is on to know where each drum sound is. He has been a professional drummer since he was 12.
@HelloThere.GeneralKenobi

After the accident, his rehab began with learning how to walk again. We could never imagine how much we use our arms for balance every single step we take. The band has been together since they were kids, so their chemistry is on point! =D Rick Allen lost his arm when he was 21. He joined Def Leppard at 15. He told them to get another drummer, but they refused, choosing to stay beside him and wait until he was healed and re-taught himself how to play. He has a special drum kit, in which his left foot pedal would emulate what his left arm could do. He still had PTSD from the accident to this day, and sees drumming as therapeutic. It's funny that you say that he's rapping, cause they've said that this could be a rap song. XD

What I love about this sound are the great rhythms and syncopation created between the drums and the guitar/vocals. As for the connection between Rock and Rap/R&B... Well if you go back far enough, the DNA of virtually all modern American music goes back to black American music. The only real exceptions that come to mind are like Bluegrass, and "classical" compositions.

Great reaction. You're not wrong about rock intertwining different genres. That is why there are so many subgenres in rock. Artists and musicians grew up years ago surrounded by blues, big band music, classical, soul, etc. All of these things influence people differently and they incorporate it into their own styles. Next thing you know, you have some brand new fusion and BAM..subgenre #57 is born. This song is from the 80s and yes, it was a banger then and it still is now. It was a monster hit. Rick Allen made up for the loss of his arm with a special drum kit that allowed him to use his feet. Totally amazing..

In their beginning, The Rolling Stones said they were a r&b band. They listened r&b and played r&b, Muddy Waters for example who accidentally named the group. Rock was not "invented" yet. They (and The Beatles and other groups) took black music and made it global. And they have influenced rock bands all of these years.

@cs-7

@@zosozildjianmagick1790 That's probably why they get forgotten about. They had two albums with names that didn't come up with and their biggest hit is a cover. Had they used that music and gave it a title and different words, it probably would've been huge and they would've stayed around longer. But Once Bitten Twice Shy came out in 1989? 2 to 3 years later, 80s hair, glam rock was dead. Motley Crue fell off. Poison, Def Leppard, Van Halen, Ratt, and Cinderella. Guns n Roses made it though because they weren't really a hair band. They didn't wear makeup and spandex and have teased hair. They were a rock band and that's why their success carried them a little bit into the 90s. By 1993 and 1994, Guns n Roses was pretty much over because they fought all the time.

@@cs-7 Also surprised that out of all of these reactors that no one has suggested one of the greatest bands of the late 80’s to early 90’s, Tesla! So many songs. Eleven if they start out with the mild Love Song, or coming at you live! So good. Incredible musicians and catchy music!

I subscribed to your channel precisely due to your fresh insight and abundant understanding of how music "works". So many people fall into a rut, following a single band, or even a single genre, and never experience the wealth of variety that music provides. It is so inspiring to see you discovering these new vistas, like opening a whole new world to you that others discovered in parallel with you.

There are many interviews about Rick Allen’s accident reacting to that is a must! Also if you think you can’t do something or your life is hard, knowing Ricks story is pure motivation!! His face when the band was inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame priceless!

If you look closely at the drummer's cockpit, you will catch a glimpse at the array of foot pedals he is surrounded by. This def leppard album was produced to blend their bedrock guitarists' delight with the body-groove of b-boy /club beats and echoplex modulation. I love that you're feeling the hip hop breakbeat in this track's fusion; this resonates with my feeling that this particular album has contributed a handful of timeless gems, and that these tracks still foster inspirational and innovative influence to many of the brilliant legacies of creative groovology and the miracle of novel styles.

Jojo - i know this is yearsssss too late to say this, but i just wanted to respond to something you said. when you commented about how rock is such a mix of so many different sounds ... that is what is amazing about rock. rock WAS a result of the mashing and gradual combination of many different genres. blues, country, folk, rhythm and blues, jazz, classical, easy listening/popular music that was around just before rock seriously hit the scene, bluegrass, americana, even some spanish or latin influences - it was an amalgamation of so many wondeful things. that is what made rock so special. when it first hit the scene it drove people crazy and was considered very dangerous! you have said it before watching some of the clips and listening to this music that it just makes you want to go crazy or jump around or get lit - that is what rock does to you!

Hey jojo, your analysis of Rock music isn't too far off, especially since you'd compared it to Blues Basically, Rock'n'Roll is a sub-genre that's derived from Blues music

Saw Def Leppard w/KISS 2014. They rocked out!! The crowd rocked out so hard, we were trying to catch our second wind for KISS. Kiss came out and was like WTF, because they usually get a loud crowd when they come out. We were trying! Got see them do the ALS bucket challenge on stage! Have seen Def Leppard in concert since Pyromania! 1983!

Rick Allen, what a legend! He uses a special kit with foot pedals so that he can play what he used to play on his left arm. You should check out "Armageddon It," that's another banger from that album!

Rick Allen, the THUNDER GOD, more than just a one-armed drummer. Check out the RU-vid videos that tell you how the band pulled together following his accident to get him back on stage. I'm 60, and this one's still a banger after all these years!

Rick Allen is known as the Thunder God. After losing his arm in an auto accident he didn’t let that stop him. He loved playing the drums so much he designed a drum machine for him to use his left leg for everything his arm would’ve been doing. Check out some of his interviews on RU-vid. It’s really amazing. The best thing about Def Leppard is they’re more like a family than a band the way they stood behind Rick Allen and waited for him to get his drum kit together.

To blow your mind even more, Phil Collen - one of the guitarists, has said this song actually has a main country guitar riff! There’s a video of him showing that. As to the drummer… after he lost his arm, the whole band was in the middle of writing and recording and they had him come back in to the studio. He would go into a room by himself and just try to teach himself how to drum with one arm. He started duplicating everything he did with his lost arm, with his other foot! So he drums with both feet and one arm…. The band was happy he was there and never spoke or thought about replacing him …but of course… deep down they thought it would of course be impossible. One day he called them all in, and proceeded to play one of their hits entirely using his new feet based techniques. The whole band was in tears.
