Hey this gets me hype, as an engineer student, makes me wanna go further down this path, thanks for sharing mate, gonna do my best to acquire a bunch of exp on revit, as this kind of work looks really interesting for someone like me who's been on the field for all of my internships, again, thanks, both your videos helps a lot.

Great content Trey, totally agree with "there is no perfect resume" :) We have to show and point out what we think are our strengths. Do you know how to do data analysis? Try to push Dynamo and Power BI, for example. Or, are you really good at making families? Well, show some images and talk about what you have accomplished. In this way, you can differentiate from the others who just write: I know Revit, I know Dynamo, etc... :D

Haha that's true. It's always good to be versatile and knowledgeable in different aspects of construction. Which is why we should all learn big data by reading Ernesto's new book :D

The single most important thing I learnt here was that being a good BIM Engineer requires on-site experience, which I lack. I understood the reasoning the moment you mentioned it because learning English (as a 2nd language) is the same - you develop an intuition for the language when you've surrounded yourself with it for a long time. And then everyday problem solving becomes easier.
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 3 года назад
This is the best comment I've ever seen. You already know the answer most people would ask and you even took the time to articulate it. Rayan, I'm sure a bright future awaits you. If you can, try taking up an internship on-site - assistant superintendent / project engineer roles and watch what happens in the field. You'd be amazed at how much you can learn just by being out there. For me, it was only for the learning experience. I do not enjoy sweating profusely outside which is why I opt for BIM Engineering. All the best Rayan.

I graduated in an Engineering degree but not construction, now persuing a MSc in BIM. Do not know exactly what to put into my resume. Now I just keep drawing models in Revit and simulation in Navisworks, to prepare to show to interviewers. Hope this way works..
@TreyTan

My friend, that works as well. Knowledge in Revit and Navisworks is super important. Once you finish your MS in BIM, I'm positive you'd get a job as a BIM Engineer! Good luck.

Thanks for the useful information, Trey! I just wanted to ask for someone with no experience, how do I start a career in BIM? I know some of the lowest levels are BIM technicians or technologists. But as you mentioned, it's better to gain experience as a site engineer or a project coordinator before applying for BIM related positions. I have already taken up Revit and Navisworks courses and I am currently learning Bluebeam while looking for BIM jobs. But now I'm second-guessing and wondering if I should look for an on-site position, to start with, instead.
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 4 года назад
If you are already well-versed in Revit and Navisworks, I don't see why you can't get a position in BIM. Even though it's true to gain real-world construction knowledge prior to entering the BIM world, with the current demand in BIM, you might be able to get away with it. Good luck buddy!

Great video! I'm wondering how difficult or challenging could be to get a job in the BIM AEC industry if I come from a non-native English speaking country (I'm a civil engineer with 2 years experience in construction field, but have worked independently modeling buildings such as hospitals and penitentiary facilties in Revit). Since I'm moving to the US by the end of this year. Keep the good work and greetings from Perú 🇵🇪

Great information! Thank you so much for sharing, I am now excited as well, this is actually the first video about BIM that I have watched lol. I have but one question so far I am 21 but currently in freshman college, I want to start getting as much experience as possible related to architecture/construction, so I'm thinking I would search for nearby opportunities that would add to my experience (I only completed one CAD class so far), I want a bit of advice from you as to what I should do. Cheers!
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 3 года назад
Hello there, the first thing I would do is to learn Revit. This is a software that's used by all Architects and construction professionals. AutoCAD is useful, but I feel that the user interface can be a little overwhelming for a beginner. Revit is a lot more intuitive and you'll grasp it in no time. Also, since you are a freshman, it's a good time to start thinking about what you really want to do when you start your first job, as it would lead the trajectory of your career. Take up as many internships as you can. I would ask yourself the question do you like creative design or hands-on field experience? Use your personality as a guide to choose the right courses and eventually the right major. All the best!

I've never been to a university nor do I plan to. But I've been a construction electrician for 9 years now. An I'm planning to spend a year while working to learn revitz on my own. Is that possible or do employers require a college degree?
@TreyTan
@TreyTan Год назад
I've seen employers hire those who had experience in the field and got into BIM. Since you're specialized in electrical, most likely you could be an Electrical BIM Engineer for an electrical subcontractor. However, 9 years into the trade should have earned you a great salary. If you become a BIM Engineer you might have to take a pay cut. Hope that answers your question. All the best Noel!

Hi Trey, thanks for providing such useful information for us! I am currently a HVAC Engineer, at the same time, I am also the Engineer that involved in BIM coordination. Because HVAC is the largest services in MEP coordination, I often get more involvement in leading the coordination process, which lead me to have strong interested in getting myself full involvement in BIM industry. Would it be an advantage for me to pursue a career in BIM Engineer or BIM coordinator with my MEP skill? I am not in expert level in terms of software because I do have other modeler to help me in settings but I do feel it's a skill set I can pick up by practicing. Thanks for spending the effort Trey, hope you do well!
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 3 года назад
No problem, I'm glad you found this video helpful. First of all, a BIM Engineer and BIM Coordinator has very similar skillsets. The Engineer tends to focus on QA/QC the model, prevent clashes and also to create new families. The coordinator works with subcontractors to ensure everyone is on the same page to prevent clashes. However, I've been in a position where I had to do both. So for you, I would say work on both. The title of the job is just a title after all. Your skillset takes precedence over your title. Good luck!

Hi Trey, it is really useful, I've specialized in structural engineering, I need to shift my corrior to BIM, what would you suggest ,how can I enter into BIM as a fresher?
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 3 года назад
You can do that by focusing on structural 3D in Revit, then learn how to use Navisworks to coordinate clashes with other 3D models. However, you would most likely be in Structural BIM modeling.

Hi Trey ! Awesome Videos so much valuable information, I went to school for Business Admin and started a self run 3D design practice and became savy with 3D modeling/compositing/rendering/rigging. I Came across the BIM sector and decided I’d like to step into the field I only have experience with water pumps/filtration systems as I worked a job as a site director with an aquatics company based in Georgia but not much construction/engineering experience. I’m taking courses on revvit/autocad and similar industry standard programs hoping to strengthen my resume. Do you think NOT having a degree in an engineering/architecture discipline, would make me an ineligible job candidate In BIM ? even if I got more entry level construction experience ? I’ve been thinking of moving to Washington but if it flops do you know much about the International job market in BIM? Thanks for the Help.
@TreyTan
@TreyTan 3 года назад
Hey Caleb, good question. First of all, it would be great if you have some kind of certification that proves your credibility. Companies typically hire those with construction experience, but it's 2020 and this could change if you're able to prove your value. Honestly, I would say that having a degree in one of these disciplines would help you a ton. It's like trying to be an accountant with a calculator but possess little working knowledge on how to use the calculator. Going to school teaches you how to use the calculator. If that makes sense. But again, no harm trying. The international market in BIM is starting to slow due to the current situation. If I were you, try sticking with your job, learn BIM part time, and when everything is over, make the switch if you can. The job market right now isn't looking too good.

I have graduated in industrial design and I know how to use cad software very well, I also have practical construction experience.. would I be able to get a job as a bim engineer?
@TreyTan

This would be a little tricky because industrial design is not related to construction. Also, the things you learned in school regarding CAD isn't the same as using CAD for building and construction. I don't want to limit you, but you could try and apply for BIM engineering positions. Good luck!

What’s the difference between BIMcoordinator and BIM engineer? Is it okay for freshers to apply for BIM coordinator ?
@TreyTan

The difference is BIM Engineer is entry level while BIM Coordinator is a position higher than BIM Engineer. BIM Engineer does more of the technical fixes while a Coordinator does the BIM coordination and technical fixes. Hope that answers your questions.
