To begin the process of creating a sourdough starter, I used a combination of wholemeal flour and water.
On day one, I mixed ¼ cup flour and ¼ cup water mix and covered them with plastic wrap. I punched small holes, but you can use some fabric.
For up to 6 days, I feed my starter daily with one spoon of flour and a spoon of water.
To create a strong and healthy sourdough starter, you can feed it with a mixture of flour and water every day for a few days. This routine will activate the natural yeasts present in the flour and promote fermentation, which will result in a tasty and flavourful sourdough bread that you can share with your loved ones.
On Day 6, I saw bubbles and smelled alcohol. I transferred the starter to a bigger container and fed it every 12 hours for two days.
It is recommended to store the starter in the refrigerator. To maintain the starter, discard one portion of it and add equal proportions of water and flour every week.
For your starter to be active and effective in baking, it is important to follow a few steps. Firstly, take the starter out of the fridge a few hours prior to using it and feed it to activate the yeast. You can indicate the starter level before and after feeding by attaching a rubber band to the container. Once the starter has risen well, check if a small portion floats on warm water. If it does, then your starter is ready to be used!
