"Start as late in the story as possible" - That's such an interesting yet simple rule for story-telling. Good stuff again! Cheers A.

I'll admit it. You have changed the way I look at stories. You have a gift of observation.

Doctor Fantastic That's cool! That was always the aim at least! - Hass

I think this is a lesson a lot of other storytellers could learn. That is, simplicity is I'm. Especially with adaptations like comic book movies. With characters like Batman, Spider-Man, and Superman their origin is put in a movie it needs to be 90 seconds or less. A complicated Man of Steel opening isn't needed. Once again, simplicity is such an important element of storytelling. And once again, great work Hass. You took three pages and made a 9 minute video. Things that subconsciously we see but don't pay full attention to.

Kai Williams Sometimes you just want to get going, right? The origins are often the least interesting parts of the story as well. - Hass

Whenever I've re-read it I seem to have learned a bit more about Supes in the meantime, and I love and appreciate All-Star more every time.

How about the fact that all the captions on the first page are 2 word combos(Doomed Planet. Desperate Scientists, etc.), so when you get to the splash, you think "Super Man."?

Oooh. Yeah that's a great thought. Love that! - Hass

The best Superman comic ever; heck, one of the best comics ever in my opinion. I figured you'd talk about these first pages eventually, it's perfect! Even then, I haven't read it in a while, didn't even notice the color shift (thanks!). Speaking of Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, their New X-Men opening is similar to this as well, with the double splash with all the character intros; I've read it recently and didn't make the connection until now. Anyway, awesome vid as always.

Neb Olevar Yeah the new X-Men opening is great, too. I think All Star Supes is up there for just great superhero storytelling. Really hard to fault it. - Hass

I'm watching my way through all the content you have here, but this is the specific video I send to other friends in order to get them to try you out. You have an amazing way of breaking down the way the eye processes sequential art -- a thing that humans are trained to do in seconds, but have very little language for expressing why some things work and others don't. Keep up the great work!

The opening of All-Star Superman instantly grabbed me. Aside from succinctly telling Superman's story, it's just so poignant. While the Krypton stuff IS rather clinical, I actually found the "Last hope" and "Kindly couple" narration incredibly powerful and emotional, like the narration was building emotion before unveiling "Superman" with this great sense of grandeur. The opening scene is one of my favourite parts of All-Star Superman, and everything about it is just so well-crafted. Despite being an excellent series in its own right, Grayson's attempts to recapture that magic just fell flat for me. Like, it was ONLY a reference; it didn't feel like it had any meaning, it was JUST there to recap Dick Grayson's history.
@StripPanelNaked
@StripPanelNaked 7 лет назад
It's just so, so, so well crafted, isn't it? I can't find much fault with it at all. Grayson, I still haven't read (I know, I know...) but I'm going to grab it on Comixology now you've reminded me! - Hass
@Fuzzy_Barbarian
@Fuzzy_Barbarian 7 лет назад
Grayson is a great read, though it's definitely uneven. But you can really see Tom King implement more of his typical cleverness into every issue he writes. Also, heads up: Get the Futures End one-shot. It's VERY well done and ends up being sorta relevant to another King issue down the line.

One thing that breaks a huge portion of the amazement (for me) is the unclear nature of the background on the double page. It kind of resembles the environment on the first panel, which makes me wonder unconsciously “What is that thing? Did he go back to the that place shown at the beginning?” Which kind of distractss me from the main subject.

Interesting! I think I just always attributed it to the sun immediately - especially with it being sort of nondescript. But a good example of how all this stuff ends up not as a science, but an art! - Hass

superman has become part of the cultural lexicon. we collectively know his backstory even if you never seen or read a movie or a comic. that is why the opening is so simple and to the point in this instance. but what about if youre trying to start a comic from scratch?

question also a request. have you considered doing a strip panel naked on franco-belgian comics? since their panel layouts are different, I think. such as Spirou et Fantasio, Gaston lagaffe and so on. I feel like it would be an interesting video. I love all your videos especially since I'm working on my own comic book at the moment.

Definitely some Moebius at some point for definite, yeah. I'd like to do a bit on Gianni De Luca (not French, I know!) too. Thanks! It's really cool to know these vids are actually helping people tackle their own work. That's as much as I could hope for! - Hass

Great video. This comic it´s so great you could do a series of videos about it. A while ago I stopped recommending Watchmen to people who wanted to start reading comics, this is more emotional and equally brilliant. One of the best comics ever.
@StripPanelNaked
@StripPanelNaked 6 лет назад
Yeah, I love it. I don't know personally that I'd rank it over Watchmen, but it's a brilliant summation of everything Superman, right? - Hass

Well, I hate lists, lets just say that they are both masterpieces. If you put a gun in my head I choose Whatchmen, but there is no need to choose, I love both. What I meant is that All Star Superman is way more easy to read for begginers and, ironically, Morrison and Quiterly used a more pure comic language, instead of the complex cinematographic/comic style of Watchmen that might be more familiar to a new reader. That´s the way I see it. And yes, nothing has capture the mith of Superman like this comic.

the opening might be phenomenal, but DAMN that coloring style... is UGLY.
@StripPanelNaked
@StripPanelNaked 7 лет назад
It's a very airbrush-y sort of style in this. If you look at WE3, it's the same colourist/inker, but with a muted palette that style might mesh better. Take a look and see what you think! - Hass
@EF5iris
@EF5iris 7 лет назад
To be honest, I usually don't have anything against airbrush-y styles (case in point: Old Man Logan) but just... I think this colorist is very inexperienced with using- or blending- colours, at least in the case of this style. The comic leaves much to be desired art-wise.
