Railfans love train meets, especially when they happen at scenic locations like Horseshoe Curve! This perfectly-timed train meet during the fall of 2019 included NS 8025, the Monongahela heritage unit, as a rear DPU.
Horseshoe Curve in Altoona, Pennsylvania, is one of the best places to watch trains in the country! It is not uncommon for 50 or more Norfolk Southern trains to pass the Curve every day, as well as The Pennsylvanian (Amtrak trains 42 and 43). There is a Virtual Railfan webcam at the rail park, allowing railfans to watch live railroad action at all times and further increasing the popularity of the rail park!
Horseshoe Curve is part of Norfolk Southern's busy Pittsburgh Division. Westbound trains heading out of nearby Altoona, PA, climb the steep grade until they reach the summit of the Allegheny Mountains at Cresson. Eastbound trains are on the downward grade as they pass Horseshoe Curve on their way into Altoona.
