Again a very nice video, Jessie. Still having a nice humming MP mid-2012. My personal Best Buy ever since 2012. Hope I’ll be able to extent its lifespan a few more years using OCLP. Cheers
When you say "Apple used a triple channel memory controller", that's misleading. INTEL made that decision, not Apple. I guess they couldn't have used a quad channel memory bus with the Xeons of that era. The later Xeons in the 2013 Mac Pro allowed for more memory channels. The chipset is usually done by the CPU manufacturer, not the OEM.
@@JessiesFlying I get it, however, when you say "Apple used", it kind of implies that they maybe had the option to use something else... "Apple could only use" or "The Xeons in the 2012 Mac Pro only support" would have been accurate...
The 4-5,1 Mac Pro is not a computer I'd advise anyone actually pay for. At most, this is a $80 computer in 2024 and buying one on eBay for several hundred dollars is simply a terrible purchase. Doesn't matter the spec, they are just really old PCs with very dated technology (USB 2.0, slow DDR3, SATA II etc). The 6,1 is a slightly different deal. Still a much better machine, but again, I'd say keep it under $200 for one of those as the CPUs and RAM are extremely cheap to upgrade to top spec. I Still use my 6,1 Mac Pros quite a bit, but I haven't touched my cMP in years.
I can wait to find a mac pro 2019 500-1000 in couple years. The 2019 MacBook pro and mac pro are the macs i’ll buy. An thank to xcode and real basic I can write my own programs. Don't need apple or other crest apps for me
Even though I have an M1 Max, my Mac Pro 5,1 still works well for me. I generally use the laptop only when I'm traveling or moving around; at home, I barely use it. So yes, the MP 5,1 is slower than the M1 Max, but honestly, it's not intolerably slow-it's pretty manageable. I can also share what I do with my MP 5,1. I'm a full-stack developer working on front-end (Angular), back-end (Node, PHP, Python), and AI with Hugging Face, and I use Docker for these development tasks. Surprisingly, this "old" computer still keeps up with the latest industry standards, and it handles software like Adobe quite well too. So, is it still functioning? Absolutely. Currently, my MP 5,1 is equipped with macOS Monterey, X5690 x 2, an RX6600XT, 128 GB ECC, M.2 x 2, 3 HDDs, 1 SSD, updated Wifi/Bluetooth, and USB 3. I feel like it could keep going unless it decides to quit one day. However, I must mention, if you're developing AI, you can only use the CPU for computations, as the MPS part obviously doesn't support the GPUs used in setups like OpenCore. Oh, and about whether this "old" computer is fast enough? I can give you a rough idea. When I run routine, small-scale, and less demanding training tasks for my RAG on the MP 5,1 using the CPU, it performs at full speed. The training speed is roughly equivalent to a cloud server with 2 to 4 vCPUs. It's an interesting comparison, though not very scientific-just something to keep in mind. Lastly, I have to say, in 2024, it's really not worth spending money to tinker with it, and I wouldn't encourage it either. But for me, I just genuinely enjoy working on it. I like how well it still performs, and I'm not too concerned about speed. Plus, the large memory capacity of this old guy is actually quite useful. The fact that OpenCore even allows it to be upgraded to 256 GB is pretty fascinating.
Considering the mac pro trash can is still supported by apple (at last for the last few months it has as of writing this) I think its automatic that its still worth it if you can get it for the right price.
Hi Jessie, another great video! A question: why do you always talk about Mac Pro 2012 if the Mac Pro 2010 is almost the same? I have one (Mid 2010 2 x 2.66 GHz 6 core Xeon, 64Gb ram) running seamlessly Ventura (I don't know why, but the Sonoma shows a forbidden sign after boot on both Mac Pro and MacBook Pro 2012). Why do you not recommend installing it on my Mac Pro? Thank you for this and all your other videos!
I appreciate you doing this, I sorta got into this comparing the 2013 vs a m1 mini. The most bonkers thing I received people profession the 6 core cpu being better than the 12 just because of a 30% clock speed over 2x the core count.
Yup, I'm still using a 5,3 and apart from one piece of software (latest) Capture One, works just fine for me... the Trash Can was a waste of time for me... having been used to the diversity of the 5,3 its expandability, storage and card slots.
Watching this on my 2012 MBP 13" i5, after using OCLP to upgrade from Catalina to Ventura today. Thanks for all your previous videos, which helped me make this happen!
Honestly I tested my Mid 2012 MBP and found that Modcern Linux makes this thing faster than Modern MacOS I have Ubuntu MATE OS installed and its faster than any version of Mac OS I have run on it.
@@johnwilson8582 still slower than running Linux does does work crazy well for its age, shame apple did not think to sell copies of the OS to people on old hardware and only do free OS updates for supported macs
Was ganz toll funktioniert ist der Austausch des USB 1 Boards mit einem USB 2 board auf dem Mainboard. Eigentlich Plug & Play mit kleiner Modifikation und ein paar Teilen von Alibaba.
Hallo Jessie, great video again. I have a couple of pre 2012 Mac’s running Monterey and if one dies not care about the maps not working these run great with OCLP. Now I don’t really use these as daily drivers though, I use a 27” iMac 2014 for that with an i5 and 48 GB memory running of an external NVME SSD on USB3 which I subjectively found to be a bit faster in praxis than my 6 Core 🎉MacPro 2013 with 64 GB, D500 and 1 TB NVME. Anyway I love the 5K display.
2014 mac mini running 14.3.1 perfectly. iMac G4 20" running 10.5.8 still works and still is workable. clients 2011 macs running 11.7.10 with an SSD all good. Mac Pro 2009 running 11.7.10 with newer video card all good. These things can be used if you know what you are doing and removed all the cloud crap. I personally have the 2020 M1 with 16Gb RAM on 14.5 and its all good
One I don't like about apple m1, if it break ill have to take it to apple. We all know apple charge a lot to fix your computer. Also you can get hold of part for m series computers. Because I would like backups of my Mac pro 2010 logic board in case it dies one day
But also the Mac mini M2 8GB... it's entering some promo here and I got one for 540 euros. I am not leaving the Mac Pro 6.1 but I try it, I am not sure the total System Memory will be enough for video editing 4K.
Thanks for such a detailed comparison, great job. I wanted to clarify one point: I have a Mac Pro 2012, I installed an RX6800 video card with firmware in it. Everything works great with Monterey. Will this video card work on Sonoma OS (after installation with Open Core)?
Awesome indeph analysis! Thank you jessy. I guess is time we all consider to move on to the mac mini,!!! Lets start hacking the mac mini then for maximun performance👌hell yeah😅
Cool videos! How much power does your iMac 27" (2012) draw? I use my iMac 27" (2009) w/ High Sierra as a "monitor". Sadly a feature that is only had w/ that H/W, macOS combo :/
I'm still running a Mid 2012 Macbook Pro zero issues in 2024 put Linux "Ubuntu MATE" on it popped in an SSD, 16GB RAM & used an adapter to install a AC WiFi card form a newer Macbook Air and the thing runs perfect for what I use it for
13:14 with the intel macs you can dual boot, which can't be done with silicon macs. So install Monterey for eGpu useage, other for Sonoma for use without the egpu.41:32 you must keep the original SSD, otherwise you can still Windows 10. I brought a OWC SSD, tried to install windows 10 with no go.
At work I was hanging on to my old MacPro 5,1 (2010). It's performance was great but because of the dated OS, I eventually had to bite the bullet. The videocard in the MacPro was the nail in it's coffin. It did not support Metal...
@@macgamer1973 I'm not sure about that. What do you need 3 for? I'm on Monterey and mine is running everything just fine... I'm doing Logic mainly though...
There is a place in Poland you can get those graphic cards , they are great , and they send the cards ready to be plug in and play !! Macvideocards ( something like that ) I forgot 😂
i have installed sonoma on a imac 2017 but i have a bug nobody is talking about.. its related to usb.. if i plug a usb stick/drive in (thunderbolt) then the imac detects it.. but when i resated then its not showing up no where.. i have to unplug it and plug in again... can somebody help?
@@JessiesFlying nothing special, if i want to connect/plugin a usb drive (external ssd) that the imac detects it but when i restart the imac (still pluged in) then the usb drive is gone.. sorry for my bad english
@@o0OmrmusicO0o that might be something how the USB drivers are implemented by OpenCore, so I think you might just have to unplug the USB before booting
Hi Jessie... I have a 2010 Mac Pro running Catalina and I'm finally looking to upgrade after all these years. What's the best stable version that you recommend? I have this: Mac Pro (Mid 2010) Processor 2 x 3.46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon Memory 128 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Startup Disk Catalina SSD Graphics Radeon RX 580 8 GB

It always feels weird for the 6,1 to be considered 'obsolete' considering it was only discontinued in like 2017 and was the most powerful offering of the time. Apple really had no idea what they were doing with it.
The 6,1 gets destroyed by a dual CPU 5,1 with a modern Nvidia gpu like a 2080 or whatever, especially if you need to a lot of RAM or some sort of PCIe card, etc.
Cool video, super detailed, big work! thanks ! I use a 2015 MBP and a 2010 Mac Pro 6-core with OpenCore, Monterey, NVMe, and an RX 6600 XT. I get these numbers: Geekbench single: 552 / Multi: 2718. I prefer comparing it to a Mac Studio M2 Max which gets: single: 2684 / Multi: 14853 ! But the RX 6600 XT competes: MacPro 6600XT Geekbench Metal: 102963 vs M2 Max GPU: 129976!! Unfortunately, this Mac Pro is stuck with Monterey with the RX 6600 XT even though it runs without any problems. The lack of fast USB is a big problem - I have to choose between PCI NVMe, SSD PCI, and USB card as I have too many things inside... The major issue is the computing time when transcoding Canon Raw video to ProRes, due to the old weak CPU... My 2010 has been rock solid since I bought it in 2011 ! Incredible computer. But for me, it's time to upgrade... I am planning to buy an M2 Max Mac Studio, or wait for the M4, we'll see in September... I will keep my Mac Pro forever as an archive machine and for some Windows games... Love this guy :)
Thank you Jessie. What a great video. Can’t wait to see the expandability video. Thank you for your great support of the unsupported Macs community. You’re truly the best. Keep up the amazing work! ❤
