Performance Harley Upgrades are More Than Just Fun and Bragging Rights

Performance Harley upgrades are more than bragging rights and just having fun. Performance Harley Upgrades can also serve another purpose with safety and utility. Have you ever considered just how much your Harley-Davidson weighs? Harley-Davidson motorcycles are not lightweights by any means, this is before you add your weight, a passenger, gear and any accessories. It's easy to have you're Harley engine hauling well over 1,000 pounds, at that point is the stock horsepower and torque really enough? With all that added weight you may not have the passing power and pulling power with the stock engine that you would want and need. Having a little extra power can be a big benefit when you're loaded and having to avoid a sticky situation.

🛑🛑 I smiled the other day when my wife and I were out on my CVO Ultra Limited “Twin Cam” with the Stage 4 117 kit in it. There was a dude and his wife on an older 1200 Sportster. The young man pulled out first and I followed. As we hit a very long straight away, I rolled the throttle on my bike and passed the Sportster with ease, and continued up a gradual grade; leaving the Sportster well behind. When we got home, I told my wife I did that guy on the Sportster a favor. My wife looked at me and puzzled my statement . Then I told her, that the guy has been telling his wife he needs a big block touring Harley, but she never saw the need for a new bike (“your Sportster is just fine”) I think things changed and wifey saw the “argument” in a different light as I “roared by”😂. I’ll bet they were at the local dealership in 3 days after that 😀👍💯.

Drove my bike to Fuel Moto, arrived 8am 27deg F outside 🥶. Dropped off 2005 Deluxe in stock form except slip ons on April 27th, Picked it up now with full on stage IV treatment the next day at 1pm! My bike is now set up with modern power, sounds amazing with the Basani Road Rage & looks sweet! The people there are one of the most friendly & knowledgeable people I’ve encountered & I now have lifetime support with them & actually I just found out in late 2021 I was only 14 miles away from them. Bob, the guy who oversees the operation lives 6miles away in the next town over. Went from a 06 Zuki liter bike, and now have an 03 RK, did gear drive/cams, better jetting in carb, air cleaner, exhaust blah blah. Power gains are noticeable but minimum at best for the money spent. I've accepted the fact that its a cruiser, not a power house. One hundred miles per hour in first gear at break neck speed is something the Zuki could do, for street riding I don't terribly miss it.

Another great video. I remember my first HD. So excited to get a 88ci engine after riding in the dirt forever. I had a Honda CR250. Thing was fast. One of my first big day rides and I thought there was something wrong with the engine. It had no power. Then I found out what you had to do. Little taken aback I had to upgrade air, pipes and a remap. Did it, and it was at best ok. Then I found out about cams. Did that swap and the engine ran like it should. Ever since then it just cost of doing business. Last time I did the heads too. I’m like you, gotta get around anything I’m passing fast as possible. My 40-90 is fast. Real fast. Love it. My 103ci is at it’s peak without over stressing the engine and transmission. Strong, fast, reliable. Down the road I go!

Stage 1 on 114 makes a pretty big difference. I just added a Cam set up and Air Cleaner and it made a big difference. On the 02 TC88 it was an anemic motor but it wasn’t all bad. I upgraded mine to a 95 gear drive and it has been a beast ever since. I would say for anyone who wants a Harley but doesn’t want to pay $25k-$30k I would recommend a early 2000s Dyna and just toss in any number of engine upgrades, oil cooler and your own touch and you will have a bada$$ ride. On the trike you should put a car tire on the front of that road nightmare. Absolutely right about performance upgrades and the real purpose of them as it relates to actual real life events. Roll on torque, I think, is what you need more than anything else as far reacting to a situation. I gave a presentation on motorcycling and hit this very point in regards to people riding scooters, even the big ones, on the highway. This is a huge advantage that American V-twin platforms have. The best of both worlds now with torque and horsepower, thank Indian for upping the game. I even mentioned how sport bikes have tons of horsepower they have no low end torque so around town at posted speed limits they feel like riding a scooter which explains why those guys are alway jerking the rpms up all of the time. I put a screaming Eagle carb kit and intake on my sportster S for this very reason. Power delivery was so much better with the exception of snapping two belts jerking on the throttle at a dead stop testing the carb. LOL! Imagine 118mph on a 1200S rigid mounted engine in fifth gear.

Very sensible, yes indeed. The best investments in your Harley really are the ones you do not see. So nottin Chrome, but all sensible: Change the handling ; progressive suspension (front and rear) Change into Michelin Tires when possible, change the brakes in to Brembo brakes, that is, if they aren't already mounted. And by all means Get that extended riding course before you're hittin the road with that huge and heavy Big Rig of a full size Harley. In general: A Harley comes with twice the weight of a normal Motorcycle and a Harley comes standard with half the power of a normal motorcycle, so basically it is 4 times easier to get in serious trouble with a Harley compared with a normal (Non Big-Rig) motorcycle, so loose the weight and increase the power. Do this for the right reason though; do this for safety reasons and not to compete with normal motorcycles, because let's face it: that's really a battle you'll never ever win with your heavy Big Rig Harley against half the weight and twice the power of a normal (Non Big-Rig) motorcycle.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
That's a great point, Harley actually does have Brembo brakes on the late models now. Harley's make pretty good torque stock but as you mentioned they really aren't like riding any other motorcycle. I'd agree there is for sure a learning curve on a Harley if your a first time owner.

I rode my 1200 custom when it was barely 42 degrees and I was so disappointed that it rode so horribly after I put a lot of work and thought into updated fork damping and progressive longer travel suspension. I got a good look at the road it was clear for about a mile with a semi coming. I down shift took off got to the second car, saw It was not happening. I start looking for a escape. What do you think about doing spotlight “fantasy” builds on the channel? Maybe a sportster that’s just for straight line performance, or a bagger built for optimum power for two-up riding (including suspension mods), or a ‘classic’ build focused on using a carbureted evo? BUT, here's a question: Wouldn't it be nice NOT to have to shell out extra hundreds on hundreds for performance upgrades just to bring a Harley up to "safe" passing power. Shouldn't a "premium" motorcycle already come with "premium" level hp and torque? Just my opinion.

Harley has quite the marketing strategy where you get a nice package stock, stage 1 really gets you where you want to be. But if you go beyond that there's always more to be had. Even Yamaha had the same strategy with the Warriors years ago with stage 1 and 2 factory packages.

The more horsepower n torque over stock like stage one is ok. It's when one goes all out with horsepower n torque maybe nitro n leaves some stock parts example compensator, primary chain, stock gear box you get the idea stock part will brake. Lots of horsepower n torque can make more heat need better cooling. I know air cooled is bulletproof, sometimes be nice to have liquid cooled from factory. Like all touring bike stock with 131 cubic inch liquid cooled with 160 hp/180 torque n trikes 155 cubic inch liquid cooled 180 hp/ 200 torque. The Boss Hoss V8 trike will get the hell out of the way but that half bike half car.

But, after 2,500 miles ridden on my Stage 4 131 I've outgrown it. I am a fan of WOODS Cams so I'm considering the 77X avenue along with the super duper DynoJet tuner and a bump in compression. On an Electra Glide Standard with its 107 I would probably want a Stage 4 kit for the reasons that you mentioned, safe but rapid acceleration and passing power. Two manual tensioners, first design seems the same between SE, TWin Power and others, it has teeth and a possibly replaceable nylon friction surface. The other one I see has a captive block that is adjusted strait up and down with a nut and locking bolt. Any preference?

@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
They both work very well, I personally prefer the SE manual adjuster or any aftermarket tensioners with that similar style.

2009 Dyna low rider, for long term reliability should I install more than a manual primary chain tensioner? While I am in there, can I effectively check the crank runout on the drive side? Also should I keep the OEM compenstor or do you recommend one? Thanks, I really enjoy your videos! Ken
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
Thank you, I appreciate it! A manual tensioner in there is the main thing, but while you're in there it's not going to hurt anything to go ahead and update the compensator if you want. The OEM is a crap shoot, some last and some don't but my opinion is the manual tensioner is partly to blame. The Screamin Eagle is a good one on the low end, but it's hard to beat the Dark Horse Man O War. Dark Horse is rebuildable too, it's an eliminator with a cush drive. To get the run out checked you'll have to pull the cams and read the runout off the pinion shaft.

I have a question for you concerning my 02 twin cam upgrade. I have all of the pieces for the Fueling valvetrain upgrades, cam plate with hydraulic tensioners, oil pump and matching lifters, 543W cams and behive valve springs. I just ordered a Hammer 98 inch big bore kit with pistons fitted. My question: are my stock heads going to be a flow issue or will I need to do some mild porting ? Is there a porting guide that I can refer to? Is this something I can do with my hand shop tools (no milling machine)? This is in a RoadKing Classic with Ness big sucker / Hooker true duals and a DynoJet tuner.
@SwiftyMcVeigh851

Get the heads cleaned up if your going with all those upgrades. You want everything to flow as it should.
@alanbenton1678
@alanbenton1678 2 года назад
The heads can make or break a good upgrade! You are cheating yourself and defeating the purpose of the upgrade if you dont include the heads!

Good day sir Gixerfoo I just watched today’s episode about where HD is headed and the aftermarket support when I spotted this vid. I have a question-I have a carbureted 01 King. First I went with Fuelings 525 cams. Then I went with ported heads and 95” pistons. It’s definitely more powerful but I want more. Would you hesitate to use Fuelings 574 cams for any reason?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 10 дней назад
The 574 Feuling is for newer models, the 525 is the ideal cam from Feuling for your year with a 95. If you really wanted to get more you might check out Wood Cams. You might check out the Wood TW-6... they deliver a bit more on the Feuling cams.

Wud up Foo! That’s what’s great about Harley’s, they can be your easy Sunday cruising go get ice cream with the wife or you can build a 9 second ripper from the same machine. It’s not like even in the 80’s they didn’t know that eventually they would be build engines over 110ci and at what point does Harley say ok, this is big enough. Granted, they are all de-tuned but is the 131 going to be your stock engine in a few years? I bet they bring back a retro 120r screaming Eagle in one of their M8’s , unless they go right to the 124. A blueprinted 120 is my favorite size, quick revving and still enough to drop 140 lbs-ft at the rear wheel… fun 🤩 anything bigger is almost irrelevant, as the tire just breaks loose.
