This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. The Jauk Dance is a classical Balinese solo mask dance from the 18th century, in which the dancer wears a white mask symbolizing a demon. Kadek Esen uses his hands and body only to convey the tension and drama of the character in this shortened version of the famous dance.
Kadek Esen is a local artist from Payangan, Gianyar. He started dancing when he was very young and has mastered many Balinese dances. Kadek was born to an artistic family, giving him many opportunities to learn Balinese arts such as playing gamelan and Balinese shadow puppetry. During the day he teaches English in one of the public high schools or Balinese dance in the community, and in the evening he performs on one of the many stages in Ubud.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
