Flashback to almost 20 years ago: On a day off in Chicago on the Fleetwood Mac world tour we filmed this tv special for Lindsey Buckingham (PBS Soundstage). It was thrown together with random rehearsals - mostly "talk-through's" at the hotel, in dressing rooms, and at a soundcheck or two, and we pulled together an electro-acoustic set with a 4-man band (Lindsey, and tourmates Neale Heywood on 2nd guitar & vox, the late-great Brett Tuggle on guitar/bass/keys/vox, and myself on perc).
This was my first foray into building a cajón-based multi-percussion kit, all made through spare gear from the Fleetwood Mac tour since we were technically on the road... A back-up cajón, spare cymbals/Roland SPD-20/auxiliary pads and pedals from my cases, and Mick Fleetwood's spare gold-plated DW hardware! I hadn't played proper drum set parts since mid-college and had SERIOUS reservations... Even to this day, I see myself as a multi-percussionist playing drum parts on the LeAnn Rimes tour (and have imposter-syndrome).
That all being said, when Lindsey asked me to take on this role, little did I know that it would turn into 2 tours with him after Fleetwood Mac (with a much more elaborate cajón-based drum set), and put me on the forefront of creating a trend in the mid-2000's of cajón drum rigs. Since then, I've played the drummer role on a cajón-fusion rig (some fully acoustic, some electronics-enhanced) for Dave Stewart, Josh Groban, Les Nubians, Jake Shimabukuro, and currently with LeAnn Rimes.
