Galaxolide is a modern white musk.
White musks are very important to perfumery. So, What do I mean by “white musks,”?
Well…. Take fabric softener, one of those fabric softener cloths and smell it. Those are loaded with white musks. Unlike animal musks, these human made musks smell like clean fresh laundry.
Galaxolide to me, smells very clean, and little bit woody - like a very very light sandalwood and baby skin. A little bit powdery. The purpose of white musks, is 3 fold:
1). Most musks last a very long time because they are large, heavy molecules. Musks slow down the drying process of other other materials in a perfume.
2). Musks help mix and smooth out the harsher angles of unrelated materials. They help the top notes, middle notes and base notes blend together.
3). Most musks are basenotes, and when a perfume is fully dried down… you can often smell the white musks on your skin. Because white musks can smell like clean human skin, they help the perfume bond to the natural scent of human skin.

Some of the perfumers describe Galaxoide as smelling like clean soft baby skin, fresh laundry, fabric softener, slightly berry like in terms of sweetness. I think it smells like very light sandalwood.
Ok, there IS a problem with this one musk, Galaxolide.
The problem with Galaxolide is two fold:
1). First, It lasts a very long time in the environment.
2). Second, it can mess with and damage micro organizism.
Galaxolide isn`t really dangerous to humans, you can probably bathe in it everyday and I doubt it will do anything bad to you (this is just my opinion) *But because it lasts a long time in the environment, and it can affect tiny little micro organisms perfume companies are now in the midst of replacing galaxolide from their products. And the problem is not that pefumes use Galaxolide, but shampoos, hair conditioners, hair sprays, laundry detergents, and other common household products use Galaxolide. Again - galaxolide isn`t really bad for people…
Although SOME people might be sensitive to Galaxolide, just like some people are allergic to penuts or eggs…. The problem is that hundreds of millions of people around the world use these products and their waste water goes into lakes and oceans… its the ***cumulative effects** of hundreds of millions people using Galaxolide. This cumulative effect can affect tiny little micro organisms.
*So please don`t think “chemicals,” are bad… Please don`t dismiss human isolated molecules are bad. They are generally very safe. Often much safer than "natural molecules,"
Galaxolide is often difficult to smell on it`s own, but it does have an effect on perfumes. And Galaxolide is often combined with other musks and is often used in combination:
Galaxolide with Hedione, Methyl Ionone Gamma, and Iso E Super.
In roughly equal proportions, it is a key component of the so-called “Grojsman accord”
*I will talk later about this Grossjman accord in a later video. In fact, I will make one for you to test at home.
