There's a right way and wrong way to use live trees as fence posts for your perimeter fencing. Proper use of live trees will not only support to longevity of your fence, it will also preserve your sugaring and lumber trees. Here, Joe - who is both a farmer and the director of Forest and Agricultural Operations at the Yale School of the Environment - demonstrates several strategies for properly using live trees in your perimeter fencing.

Thanks for the video. Do you have a recommendation on particular insulators for longevity? I'm also wondering how quickly the fence will be tightening up from growth?

Very helpful video! Thanks for putting this out there. I think it's very interesting and could be really effeciant to use trees as sort of "living posts" and it's neat seeing others prospectives on this

I live the second solution...however I might put periodic posts in since where I live at squirrels and other rodents love to chew anything attached to a tree. Especially in the winter.

Great video. Excellent instruction. Thank you. I was thinking Trex would also work as a base for the insulators.

Won't this method cause damage to the tree? Would it not allow for water and pest intrusion? If the the tree is to be harvested at a later date for lumber would this not devalue the tree?

Are those J-bolts really going to stand up to the pull of high tensile wire the way a double H-brace corner would?

How about ratchet strapping a piece of wood to the corner tree, and putting the j-bolt in that wood.

Great video and just what I’ve been looking for! Not sure if it’s too late to comment, but I was wondering if you can just get some kind of insulator for the wire and then wrap it around the tree? I know this wouldn’t work in terms of allowing the tree to grow but I’m looking for a way to make a fenced in area that I can move easily. Any feedback would be great!

I don't believe you can unscrew it. Don't matter, j bolts are cheap.
