You say that but during a recent interview with TheCharismaticVoice he admitted he would scream until he tasted blood... so... I think he might be a rare case of someone whose vocal cords just take abuse better than most. Or he is exaggerating his own inexperience so the rest of us feel better about how amazing he is.

4:24 this is especially self evident in something like Periphery's "Mile Zero". Not that spencer's technique is off when growling notes like "I will miss you my friend", but you can hear the sorrow in that line deeply.

His point about vulnerability is so key. It drives the emotions that people connect to. And his range gives Periphery so many different levels to operate on. Awesome stuff and a smart interview.

So as it turns out, that high screaming that Devin Townsend is stuck in mostly is the same thing Spencer does. I.E. the discernible pitch is in head voice, not chest. That's what I hear, anyhow. Back in the days I used to scream like that, I found you could lean on one side or the other of the break to achieve different sounds. Sounds like the target notes are higher than I'd have guessed for Spencer.

It is the headvoice placement, with airflow through the glottis allowing the true folds to vibrate too. The best way to learn to do that safely is with the messa di voce exercise. best of luck

It's amazing to hear how similar Spencers vocal backstory and technique is to myself and other vocalists I've talked with. Some of this stuff is never shown or discussed often and it's just fantastic to watch. I wonder how many people learned to scream on their way to work/school to avoid the embarrassment haha. @@korkunctheterrible4302 it's great for warm ups even low deathmetal style vocals. It helps me. If you wanna learn how to do low growls then you have to search other channels. I learnt on my own and it developed. Everyone is little different on how they learn but you take what helps you. Hope that helps.

I've been singing along to Periphery in ny car since the P1 days. Its super dope that thats where Spencer started. And though I don't have the balls to show anyone outside my girlfriend and a few friends I'd say I have a weird mix of Spencer, Phil Bozeman of Whitechapel, Dan Tompkins of Tesseract, with a touch of hip-hop vocals like Lupe Fiasco and Charles Hamilton.

wow, for years i had this thought that something about Spencer's singing sounds a bit like Davey Havoc to me (sometimes he does a similar thing on the end of notes, that lite abrupt stop of breath that almost sounds like a high pitched scream, and the phrasing, the heavy transients, the raspy mixed voice) ... and now when he mentioned AFI in the first minutes of this video it all clicked. awesome.

Man, this video about voice-break screaming has given me hope into finally finding my screams. I can do the low false chord but I've been trying vocal fry for forever. My fry is always super quiet and weak but this voice-break style, this comes natural to me. It feels so right and with time I'll have the confidence to do something with it. Thank you so much chris

Thank you for doing this! Periphery is one of my favourite bands of all times, this is so cool! I had the honour of seeing them live in 2013 in Vienna, I was in the front row. I legit remember hearing Spencer's voice way louder from his own mouth than I did from the speakers. He really is something else!

I know if not in the studio people would be terrified by that spot 😂 imagine just hearing a bunch of HEYS I personally would knock on the door and how I've gotten to play with a lot of the bands I did when I was younger was hearing the bands from their basements and I'm glad being 12 years old in a new town carrying drum sticks everywhere and looking for people to jam with and in doing just that I've gotten to make music with a lot of AMAZING bands replacing their drummers and vocalist just by showing up at band practices and showing the drummer at the time that this would sound cool! Or with the singer being so young hanging with musicians 5 years older than me was a great experience! Never be afraid of sitting up! And showing what your skills can do!

I do exactly what spencer did in the car on the drive to work. In under 5/6 months I figured out how to do it and would frequently sing and scream trying to emulate Corey Taylor on the Iowa record, I got pretty close but I stopped doing it because frankly it was ruining my voice because Corey himself said he had no technique in his early days and would just scream out of pure aggression and he said he blew out his voice at the end of the Iowa world tour

So much truth in screaming with emotion, the difference is huge. Every time I don't let the emotions take over me I feel always like I am holding back, almost as if I was tight. Now I think it is good to practice without emotions because you sort of need that to learn the boundaries of your voice, or technique if you will. However whenever performing or simply want to have fun, let the rage and suffering consume you. Great video, love it. Good job as always Chris... By the way, I like the chemistry between you two. As if you were brothers, seems you found a friend for life.

I loved this! Great video :) one of my favorite screams of Spencer is on Reptile when he does what is nearly a tritone slide, it's fantastic. And you can definitely notice the intended notes during most screams, your work does not go unnoticed Spencer!
