Periyar Tiger Trail is the best forest stay and trekking program available in South India and arguably the best wildlife program in India. Periyar Tiger Reserve’s Tiger Tail is available in two options one night forest stay and two nights forest stay. One night stay costs 7500 Rs per head and two nights stay costs 10000 Rs per head. Maximum 6 people can attend this program and minimum two persons required. Two night program is conducted only once in a week that is on every Saturday and one night program twice a week on every Tuesdays and Thursdays. Booking can be done only online from the Periyar tiger reserve website.

Periyar Tiger Trail program starts with the check in at Ex-Vayana office near the Thekkady Checkpost, Trekking will start around 9:30 AM, the first stretch is 3km, Four guides and one armed beat forest officer will accompany you. You can take a small break at the forest office, then cross the lake in a bamboo raft to start the main trekking to the tiger trail camp site. It is around 6km forest trekking through the deep forests of Periyar tiger reserve, where you have high possibility of sighting different wildlife.
Tiger trail camp site is in an island, you have to take another bamboo raft to reach there. Your wlecome drink (lime tea) will be ready by the time you reach there. Your lunch also will be ready, it is a light lunch (mostly uppma). You will get some time to take rest or see the campsite and surroundings, then around 3PM another trekking will start further deep into the forest. This is a real wildlife trekking, it takes some 3 hours.
Once you back after the trekking, you can have a bath in the periyar lake, which is some 100+ feet deep in that area (avoid this if you don’t know swimming). For the first day dinner you will have a vegetarian meals. Thanks to the guides, they are excellent chefs as well. Only vegetarian food is available in Tiger trail program. Sleeping bags are provided. Next day early morning one more deep forest trekking there, your breakfast will be around 11:00 AM after the trekking.
