@@marlan5470 Yes. California was so convinced that they were in permanent drought due to "climate change," that they didn't bother doing anything to capture water when it DID rain, wasting many opportunities to ease their situation, just letting flood waters flow unimpeded to the Pacific, while continuing to bicker over water rights and mining the water that God gave them. There's so much that you can do with relatively minor sculpting of the landscape, and intelligent plantings.

We had several ponds on our property in the dry tropics which were seasonal, and used to charge the aquifer and water livestock and wildlife. We added local Nothobranchius fish (killifish) which lay eggs in the mud, and these hatch when the ponds refill, these controlled mosquitoes, and were a food source for kingfishers herons etc, as well as some human consumption. Once the small fish were established, we added larger lung fish which provided a larger fish and a better food source for humans - only allowed to be fished in the wet summer, and no digging them out during the dry period, so as to maintain the population.

People often think we in the Netherlands are fighting against water, but actually we’ve been working with water for the longest time. Along the major rivers are flat areas which flood almost every year, 50 to a 100+ metres from the dyke. Rivers need space to expand. You can’t stop flooding, but you can control which parts flood. Large ponds also play an important role in that. If rivers overflow, or rainfall is too much, excess water is led towards swampy areas or ponds/lakes through a large amount of irrigation. Technology definitely helps, but in the end you need to give water room. Work with the water, not against it.

My buddy's dad walked his property line with dowsing rods.(he was old, old school) We were all laughing at him behind his back, till the well diggers dug up a spring, on his very first detection using dowsing rods. Nobody laughed at him after that..we stock it with Catfish and Tilapia, and some feeder fish with a couple largemouth bass that we introduced to the pond. We also have five hydroponic towers that get most of their nutrients from the fish waster. Thinking about raising rabbits next. I'd like to raise guinipigs for meat, but my family thinks I'm a sicko. Excellent presentation. I was talking to my aunt yesterday about rainwater collection techniques I have been learning from you and others. To my surprise, she mentioned that my grandfather(her Dad) had dug 4 big ponds in his farm which collected lots of rainwater. They had really good crop harvests each year due to the ponds. I remembered that we collected water from one of the ponds during the dry season each year, until the mid-80s when the drought lasted more than 4 years. I was really impressed that the old generation knew these techniques, but also sad that their children lost all that knowledge.

@@amillison You know Andrew, the multiple pond system you just described here can be implemented at my nephew's farm. He is fortunate to have a small stream flowing through his farm on one side close to the fence, into a bigger stream at the back of the farm. I will try to sell him the idea and see how he likes it. The small stream could be planted with native grasses to lessen erosion as it flows through the farm and have swales coming off the stream at intervals for planting fruit trees too. Maybe I am crazy. 😀

I am currently working on ponds in a drainage ditch from my spring fed well. (No choice in positioning) Three ponds will increase the ground water in the dry area of my forest garden edge. All three are for habitat. One or two I will be able to put fish in. Some day, I hope to make a seepage pond at the highest point of the property and feed it with a 12V pump running off a solar panel. So this video was very interesting. Thanks for sharing!

I have a large ditch by my house we need to do something like this with. But the soil is sandy that doesn't pert. Will that feed our ground water or hold it too much?
@ecocentrichomestead6783
@ecocentrichomestead6783 2 года назад
@@susanfreeman5340 The sandier the soil, the faster and further the water will spread. Keep in mind, the further is also down. The deeper the sand, the deeper the water will go down and not out as far.

This is an awesome first step to a small pond I'd love to make, a habitat pond that seeps out for small crops nearby. Theres been so much rain this year, it's hard not to think about making a pond!

Thank you, I’m in the process of applying to the agricultural science program online-torn between this and the horticultural science program, however I think you convinced me enough to go with this route. I can not describe my passion in words, but recently I had mindset shift from: “Oh, I want to but I don’t think I’d be good at it,” to, “F@ck it, this is what I want to do with myself.” Thank you, wish me luck on the application. I’m so nervous

This pretty much sums the basic ideas very clearly and informatively! I've only built one relatively small pond myself yet and another was already on my land. Oh, mistakes were made of course but nothing that could not be turned into a feature if not advantage. Both ponds are without any liner, placed on a highest part of the plot close to each other. It allowed us to perform maintenance without water losses since we simply pumped excess water to neighboring pond. It also helped to quickly stabilize chemical and bio water balance, allowing much quicker introduction of aquatic plants because usually you have to wait a year at the very least beforr introducing fish or flora to a newly filled pond. Anyway - great vid!

We are getting ready to put in a large koi pond next to our proposed garden area that we plan to install media beds and floating raft beds to create a recirculating, outdoor aquaponic system. Fingers crossed

I would love to see it when it's done! I've been playing with aquaponics in IBC totes for the last 8 or so years and I'd like to build a pond full of tilapia with grow beds for filters and some floating rafts. I tried it once for a while with lettuce floating in the pond with a net underneath to protect the roots. The tilapia still got to the plants and they died. A separate pool is better so you can filter the water before the floating plant pond. The roots get bio slime if the water isn't filtered but I didn't know until I tried it. Now the info exists on RU-vid to do it all right. Good luck!

This was pretty much a video version of basic parts of the old USDA publication #590 for basic pond building. Both of these are sufficient for an irrigation pond. There was one glaring exception which is the root of the demise of most of these ponds in that there was no discussion about preventing siltation which fills most ponds within a few decades. You do not want to incur the expense of dredging since it usually costs more than the original construction.

It would be great if they could use data from satellites and clever algorithms to determine good spots for such waterworks. Maybe even inform design based on the information gathered. Ideal, Size, shape, usage, etc. Even suggest contextual recommendations for permaculture practices around such works. Worldwide. It would arguably be immensely beneficial to direct technical and material aid to developing countries optimally. Especially where desertification and erosion are problems.

For the how part, I highly recomend a bulldozer over any other type of heavy machinery, they can move more soil farther and faster then any excavator or backhoe. The bigger the dozer, the better. The main reason is the distance the material needs to be moved. Even when compared to an excavator and a dump truck, a lone bulldozer can do a better, faster and cheaper pond then any other earth mover out there. Certainly excavators have their place in dredging and such to renovate a pond but for the initial dig, a bulldozer can't be beat.

I definitely like the windmill and the high pond or cistern thing. I always liked the spring-fed, always-full ponds the best. But you gotta get pretty lucky to get that. But there's so much that you can do by making small changes to the landscape that improve matters.
