Permaculture Zones

A permaculture site is divided into zones. Understanding the five zones allows for a design that considers the most effective placement of components and how they relate to each other. Each zone has a different requirement for maintenance and function. Zones 1 and 2, or areas needing the most attention, are placed closer to the home and heavy traffic areas while zones 3, 4, and 5 radiate out from heavy traffic areas as upkeep needs become less intensive. @1:05 Zone 1 is considered the domestic zone. Let’s think about some things that require one or more visits every single day and are connected to the house. A greenhouse, a workshop, a worm bin, salad garden, kitchen herbs, poultry and other small animals just to name a few. @1:31 Zone 2 is what is thought of as the home orchard. This is still quite close to the house or other structure, so is used for domestic self-reliance. The elements in Zone 2 are higher maintenance and require regular visits. Some examples that could be found in Zone 2 are barns, animal housing, wood storage, fruit and nut trees, berries and other small fruits, vegetables, chickens, rabbits, and composting just to name a few. @2:15 Zone 3 is what we think of as the farm zone. It’s visited more infrequently with more extensive methods of cultivation. This is where we might grow a cash crop of vegetables or fruits, orchards, firewoods, pasture, large ponds, hedgerows, and larger animals like cows, sheep, goats and pigs. @2:46 Zone 4 is what we think of as the forage zone. This zone has minimal care and is used more for hunting, gathering and grazing. We may harvest firewood, hunt mushrooms, wildcraft herbs, and selectively graze to reduce fuel to protect from wildfire. @3:12 Zone 5 is the wilderness, where we practice very minimal to no management. These are the places we leave to wild nature, and the most we take from them is information about how nature works, so we can then use that information to create our own cultivated ecologies. We are learning from natural patterns and processes, and mimicking them in our own systems so we can use the functionality of nature in our own life-support systems.

Zones are very important. We should value the edges of zones as much as the zones themselves.

Food doesnt mean always food for humans. organic waste becomes food for the earthworms.

I've created the playlist here: ru-vid.com/group/PLUhmkuu0rcYlCefHbeXLBX3P3I_fEzUFC Unsure whether the order is absolutely correct, however, because the videos were all uploaded on the same day. I have ordered them inference. Enjoy!

I wonder if muscle power is also included as a major designing factor in Permaculture.

How would you go about debating with my husband about placement of our 30x100ft greenhouse/high tunnel. I wanted to place GH close to home but he said that will take away some of his view and he feels it's too close to home that it gives him "congested" like everything is too close that he feels he can't breathe while I am trying to make him understand that it needs to be in zone 1 so we can tend to it every day. We have another spot that he is ok with but it's at least couple hundred feet away from home or in zone 2 which I feel too far and too much footprint...so what do we do? Thanks.

University: Taking extremely simple things that are used every day in natural life, making it as complicated as possible , and charging people $100 an hour to re-learn it. 😂🥴🤦🏻‍♀️
