No Need to buy a new battery!
If your Verizon Fios ONT Battery Backup Unit (BBU) is beeping because of a low or dead battery, this video will show you how to permanently stop the beep without buying a new battery. These old units were designed to maintain power to your old fashioned land line if your main electricity went out. However, the battery should not be needed if the only service you need is your Fios Internet. Unfortunately, many of these unit will continue to alarm with an annoying beep if you remove the battery, even if you try to silence the alarm.
So what we are going to do is simply remove the beeper, the "Piezo buzzer" entirely from the circuit board! This allows you to go on your merry way with no battery at all.

This is absolutely brilliant. I followed this exaclty and it took me about 5 minutes. I would add just one comment. I very carefully lifted the speaker off the board with a tiny flat tip screw driver. I don't suggest Ripping it off with pliers. If you use brute strength and craxk teh mother board, you will be PHUCT. Other than that, this probably saved me from jumping off a tall building from that crazy beeping.

This is the correct way to permanently solve the backup battery beeping problem NO MATTER WHAT YOUR UNIT LOOKS LIKE. Different units were used in different years

Agree with comment about taking care with the Piezo speaker. Nice to see someone using an old-fashioned screwdriver rather than a power drill. Tip of the hat for that

Thanks so much for this. My really BBU randomly started beeping even with a brand new battery fully healthy and charged. Now I can just rely on occasional checks with a DMM without that incessant alarm.

I’m a happy man now! Our only landline phones are cordless phones (which won’t work in a power outage anyway because the base unit needs power for the phones to work). So the battery backup is pretty much useless to us. And let’s face it, it is 2023. I think we’ll survive without a landline phone if the power goes out. Plus, the only people who use that number are telemarketers and my mother in law haha. I replaced the battery once, a couple years ago. I was about to do it again when the woman at Batteries and Bulbs, the store where I bought it, tested the existing battery and said there was nothing wrong with it. She gave me advice on what to do to eliminate the beeping but it eventually would happen again. Followed this video to a T and voila! No more annoyance - ever again! Everything else on my system continues to work.

I was worried about this and spent so much time trying to get a new battery. I don't need it if I don't have a landline?! THANK YOU!!!

I finally got around to doing this today. I've been swapping and recharging batteries twice a year, sometimes more, for more years than I want to admit to. Really hate permanently altering a device like this, but enough is enough. I believe the recharging circuit in the device has failed, but Verizon wouldn't do anything and I'm sure Frontier won't either. Thing is, the batteries were always just fine, not even discharged much. Everything is working fine now. TV and internet went down while I had it unplugged obviously, but it all reconnected perfectly when I plugged the ONT back into the cable and power supply. Had to slot out the hole where the cable comes in because the installer left zero slack in the cables, but that was easy with just a pair of wire cutters. Thanks for making this how-to video.

I have a different style Fios BBU and merely disconnecting the negative battery terminal clip worked for me. Now eventually I should recycle the battery, but this was a quick fix.

Another method that worked for me without damaging your ONT (which I think still technically belongs to Verizon?) Mine had a DC input jack on the side -- these are meant to provide battery backup power from an external source. I plugged a universal DC adapter I had (with the proper size and polarity tip and correct voltage setting) and it silenced the alarm. The unit just assumed some external battery was supplying the backup power, when it reality it was just an adapter plugged into the wall socket. The trick is getting a magnifying glass and carefully inspecting the input jack on the ONT -- it should have tiny text indicating the proper DC voltage and tip positive/tip negative style of adapter needed. The tip size is just trial and error - find the one that fits.

I have a land line and when the power went out so did my landline. It never worked nor did my neighbors. We both couldn't figure out the point of the battery because it didn't work on anyone's. I pay Verizon enough. IM not paying $40 for a battery that doesn't do anything. I removed the battery some say this may do it depending on the age of the unit. I'll have to wait and see.

BigBossBilly Will Smash The Verizon Fios Box In August 7 2021
@MarcSherman1

I do not think @BigBossBilly should do that, unless Fios has given him a new box that does not have a back up battery for VIP phone service

The primary function of the box is to convert a fiber optic signal to an electrical signal of bits (1's and 0's) that can be used by your Fios Router. That is a) why there's the little "green thing" that is never disconnected in the video, and b) why you need to reconnect the box after you remove the alarm unit from the circuit card: the "green thing a) does the conversion, and b) therefore needs to be supplied with the correct flavor and voltage of electricity.
