Haugen was a tough as nails brawler, but Whitaker produced an absolute masterclass here. Didn't lose a minute, never mind a round, giving a textbook example of how to beat an opponent who is physically stronger. A fantastic performance.
Haugen was not brawler, he was more a boxer. He could get in braw if need be. He was actually a boxer with out power. His toughness made him into a brawler.✊🏿☀️🌟🛸🔥💯
Whitaker was just a phenom! Before he got old (and became a borderline alcoholic) he never even looked like he was in a fight. He was just playing a game in the ring, he was so talented. While Mayweather and Hopkins boxed like scientists, reading every feint to avoid punchers, Sweet Pea could dodge everything like he wasn't even trying!
Both Mayweather and Hopkins had great defenses. What I like about Sweet Pea as a boxer though is that he throws (and lands) more punches on his opponents whereas guys like Mayweather and Hopkins tend to use their legs and clinching a lot more. Floyd and Hopkins don't like to engage when their opponent does and sneak in a hard jab, a lead right hand, a counter, or a quick one-two from time to time and only begin to throw punches when they know their guy is hurt, but Pea throws about 65-80 punches per round throughout the bout. Whitaker blocks like they do but I think he was greater when it comes to dodging punches bc he throws more punches also which means he keeps himself within range of his opponent and imo, makes his defense even more miraculous.
Complete masterclass by Whitaker, 1 of the most skilled boxers ever, the greatest lightweight champion since Roberto Duran... Whitaker is even better than Mayweather on a pure skill level.
Haugen might be unfairly remembered nowadays mostly for the beating he took at the hands of Chavez in 93, but this is his worst loss by far. Haugen was in his absolute prime in 89, and here he is facing an up and coming kid still early in his career, and he can't land a single shot on him, let alone win a round. This is as one-sided as it gets. No amount of Haugen shaking his head will ever change that. (Don't mean to be too brutal to the man either, he was a formidable champion in his own right, just was completely outclassed here).
If you find a better one, hopefully it will have Whitaker's entrance to the ring, which if I remember correctly, he had the orchestra from his high school play the entre nous. Now that's both novel and cool as he[[
whitaker was one of the best wetlerweights to ever live. what a jab. sharp, busy.always building up points .his personal life is non of our (collectively)goddam business.Bogie told Sinatra "all you ever owe your public is your best performance " he met those expectations( whitaker ). if I were going to comment on pete's situation however,..I'd say what mark twain said . "you can pick your friends, you can't pick your relatives". I'm sure we can all second that.
I give Greg a lot of credit. Fighters were avoiding Whitaker at that time but Greg had that old school mentality. He gave a shot to Whitaker though many felt Haugen wasnt going to win.
Whitaker was a nightmare opponent for anyone. A southpaw with speed and athleticism. I think Haugen would have done better in a rematch at a neutral site. Granted.....a tough fight regardless.
One of the more impressive things about Whitaker's performance was how effective he was with the jab. When southpaws are matched with orthodox fighters, it can be almost impossible to establish the job, for both sides. The opponent is further away and it's easy to close the shoulder and block. In this fight though, Whitaker shredded Haugen with a stiff lead jab. Part of the reason was that Haugen fights kind of square and tends to lean in. The main reason though, was Whitaker's speed and technical brilliance. 'Power thrills but speed kills.' On that night, Haugen kept getting run over by a Maserati. Rest In Peace, Sweet Pete. I hope you're enjoying it up there with all the other champions.
Gayweather used excessive holding , who ever said footwork was running? all boxers use footwork bonehead. Gayweather would jab and clinch the same thing everyone hated Wlad Klitschko for
No way can anyone accuse Whitaker of being negative here. Coming forward, snapping the jab, banging body shots in, dominated the fight the whole way through.
Narrow shoulders, large head, short arms, long legs but short stature... yeah, what makes you think that? Diego Corrales was another peculiarly disproportionately built guy... almost 6' but with really short arms and a rather large head. He took a lot of punishment in his career as a result, though his crushing punching power saved him against shorter fighters with longer arms and better boxing ability like Acelino Freitas and Jose Luis Castillo; both of whom were beating Corrales until he came from behind to knock them the fuck out!
This was not a good styles matchup for Greg Haugen and in addition perhaps the best performance by Pernell Whitaker. If this more offensive version of Pernell would have surfaced in all his later fights, he would have gotten even more credit for being a truly great all-around champion.
At 4:17 Whitaker doesn`t put his right foot outside or inside the orthodox lead foot of Haugen, Haugen should of tried to exploit this but doesn`t know anything about footwork, Mayweather would have got outside Whitaker`s lead foot meaning he would of escaped Pea`s jab very often, which was why the southpaw Pac couldn`t cut the ring off Floyd in their bout.
this Pernell would have boxed the shit out of Floyd gayweather Jr!!! this Pernell was faster and had just as good a defense as gayweather!!! it would have been a real chess match but when the smoke cleared, I think sweet pee would win a unanimous decision over floyd gayweather!!! both of them are feather fisted!!!
Whitaker beats both at lightweight, in fact he beats both at welterweight too as long as we are using prime welterweight Whitaker, the one that beat Chavez, Cardona and McGirt (2nd fight) in back to back fights. I think Mayweather would give Pernell a tougher fight than Pacquiao. Whitaker has a skill advantage over both men but the pure boxing skill gap over Pacman is huge. He beats Pac about 10-2 or 9-3 at worst.... he beats Floyd 8-4 or 7-5.
wheelinthesky300 Whitaker is more talented and skilled then both of them and has an advantage in that Mayweather can't block the jab. Pacquiao is too aggressive and would be counter in most of his attempts on the offensive.
Chavez ko haugen the black could not be as there are people so stupid that says that whitaker won a chavez when he ran and hugging lol lol the 2 are sons of chavez
@ kilumikin Dominguez - English is clearly not your first language - I have no idea what you are trying to say, comment on the fight? discussing traffic in your home town? a recipe for spaghetti? who the hell knows
