Ok first of all hades isn’t actually that bad he’s really just a good guy but ever since Disney made Hercules, people now think of him as an evil person. In one Greek legend, hades loves Persephone so much that he tortured two men who came to the underworld to try and take Persephone away from him. He also helped a man get his wife back but the man only lost his wife because he did the exact thing hades told him not to do

Sometimes people forget that Hades wasn't intending to kidnap her right away. This is how I picture it: Hades (to Zeus): "I know nothing about girls... should I just ask her if she likes me... ooorrr?" Zeus: "haha silly brother, so inexperienced in the ways of women. If you think that her mother will even let you get close to her, you're a fool!" Hades: "Well what do you suggest I should do? Write a love letter or something?" Zeus: "KidNapP hEr oF cOurSe"

To be fair, Persephone was promised to Hades, who is one of the only gods to remain faithful to his girl. He even prevented two "heroes" from kidnapping her by fusing them to chairs with snakes and sending the wraths on them. They're truly a great couple.

To be completely honest, I've read some of the other versions of this story, and I like this one the best. Hades acted as nothing more than a gentleman---despite the fact that he kidnapped her from a controlling mother---He treated her as his equal, and even gave her the option to leave. If he truly were as bad as the other gods, he wouldn't have given her an option, and he most certainly wouldn't have cared to ask for consent! Hades was the best choice she could've ever made, and I respect her decision to stay with a man that treats her right. Slay girl, Slay!

I always feel sad when Demeter’s mourning of Persephone makes her turn old, I read an academic journal once that said that Demeter turning earth into winter is a metaphor about a mothers sadness when her daughter marries and moves away.

This is so... beautiful. Hades never wished evil to Persephone or her Mother. He just fell in love... That's why he gave Persephone everything he had. That's why he married her. And that's why he let her go back to her mother, giving her a chance to choose. Even if at first he looks like a kidnapper, he shows himself as a loving husband at the end of the story.

Very interesting! She doesn't eat the pomegranate until after she's out of the Underworld. Then when she wants to go back to her mama, she eats an apple from the surface. It's like they're giving her bus passes to go back and forth--but it's with fruit. Demeter isn't a helicopter parent--she just misses her daughter. Hades isn't a bad guy--he just wanted love. I really like this version you made. In the end she realizes her baby is all grown up now, so she lets her go be a badass in the Underworld. Very good story.

Fun fact: the original myth for Persephone, before the Catholics got it in their hands, actually made Persephone FIND an entrance to the Underworld while she was frolicking in a meadow, and Hades never even meant a for her to come, but when she did, she loved the Underworld for what it was, and told Hades to make her his queen. Demeter was beyond scared and PISSED that they can't find her precious Kore (btw in this myth, Persephone was named Kore aka "Little Child") and she then created the famine for humanity to suffer for not having any help with the search. Zeus (who didn't like seeing his worshippers dying out in massive rates) was finally tired of Kore's antics and personally got her *himself* from the Underworld. Hades later found out and was mortified, already having fallen in love with Kore. But, Kore had eaten a pomegranate without Hades knowing, knowing that if she didn't she would never return to her beautiful kingdom and husband. Zeus then punished her after he heard that she had eaten the fruit of the dead, connecting her to the Underworld forever. He "grounded" Kore by staying with her mother for six months and spend the rest with her husband. Oh! And he also changed her name from Kore (little child) to motherFUCKING CHAOS BRINGER! OUR BABY PERSEPHONE'S NAME MEANS CHAOS BRINGER IN THE ORIGINAL STORY! She also dishes out most of the punishments in the Underworld too. So yeah. Persephone is a badass if I do say so myself!

I really like this. It shows Hades and Persephone's relationship in a very real and positive way. It shows how, yeah, Hades kidnapped Persephone but Hades gives her the pomegranate as an option. And how Demeter grows to accept Persephone's love for Hades and how she eats the fruit by herself.

Persephone and Hade's story was always my favorite they had pure love for each other and were pretty much monogamous. He treated her right, like an adult, and he let her be the badass she always was

Y'know in some versions, like the one I originally read first was.. Hades didn't kidnap Persephone. Hades invited her to his place and Persephone agreed. Hades offered her 12 seeds as food. Persephone ate it. Her mother hurriedly went to look for her but when she found her she already ate 6 seeds. We'll, as we know in Greek mythology once you eat something from the underworld you can never go back. So it was settled that Persephone spends 6 months with her mother that makes spring and summer then 6 months back in the underworld with Hades, hence autumn and ffall.And it was believed that Persephone actually loves Hades

Poor Demeter, I could almost feel the mother's grief.

The art is absolutely beautiful, telling this story without words. I also loved that in the end Demeter respected her daughter's choice. She's going to miss her, but she was already suspicious that her daughter was no longer really happy on the surface and wanted to be with her husband. It's hard for her to let go, but she can see her daughter is really happy with Hades, and Demeter understands that Persephone is no longer a child and needs to live her own life and she accepts that. I think that speaks to any mother learning to let go of their children.

I’ve seen a bunch of, “ No this isn’t the original story, men messed it up years later! Persephone wanted to go! Posts, I feel the need to spread this post and inform y’all. “ A disclaimer, first of all: any post that says THIS IS THE ORIGINAL MYTH is going to be wank, because we don’t know what the original myth was - we only have the first written sources, but without a time machine there’s just no way of finding out how the myth developed in an oral tradition. So already, we can debunk about 80% of that post. Groovy. The first source we have for Persephone being carried away is in Hesiod’s Theogony, written in the 8th or 7th century BC. We also have the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, written in the 7th or 6th century BC, which is explicitly about her being taken away by Hades. Hesiod is one of the oldest Greek sources that we have, roughly contemporaneous with Homer. We don’t have any earlier sources than this which say ‘hey, Persephone went to Hades because she thought it would be cool’. A lot of people have theorised that this could have been an original, or at least an earlier tradition, but it’s about 60% wishful thinking, 20% misinterpreting evidence (i.e. assuming that Persephone and Demeter used to be aspects of a great mother goddess, which they weren’t) and about 20% conjecture based on actual rational thought (i.e. the fact that the oldest written source we have is about an abduction doesn’t mean that it is the original source; there could be older non-extant written sources or just oral tales which pre-dated writing). It’s not fact. It’s true that Homer himself never explicitly says that Persephone was abducted - he just describes her as Hades’ wife - but he also doesn’t say that she wasn’t abducted; it could well be that the myth of her abduction was so well known that he had no need to recount it. It is true that Persephone’s name was Kore, which means ‘maiden’; however, this could be an epithet because she was unmarried. It’s also theorised that it was a euphemism of sorts for when people didn’t want to name Persephone outright; again, this is a theory. Lots of gods had epithets - basically cooler names which underlined some of their core attributes, e.g. Apollo = Loxias, which highlights Apollo’s powers of prophecy. Unlike the post claims, the name ‘Persephone’ does not definitively mean death / destroyer; the etymology is unknown. The ‘death / destroyer’ theory is just one of many, and others are based around ideas of harvest and grain. The reason Zeus got involved wasn’t just because he was tasked with sorting out justice - it was because he had told Hades ‘hey, you want a wife? Cool! Abduct my daughter, Persephone. Her mum totally won’t mind,’ and then when Persephone’s mother did mind, Zeus was like ‘I fucked up real bad, I should sort this shit out.’ In Ancient Greece, women didn’t have to consent in the same way as we do now. Abduction marriages were actually illegal (or at least very very naughty) but the bride’s consent basically took the form of her father saying ‘you’ll marry this dude, right? Yeah, cool. She’ll marry you, dude.’ Here, Zeus gives Persephone’s consent to Hades by telling Hades that he can marry her - this is why technically she wasn’t exactly abducted, because the necessary consent - her father’s - was given. HOWEVER, let’s not get into Greek law here. She was abducted by our standards. It is also true that Persephone became a very feared goddess and basically had a great time in the Underworld. She wasn’t exactly more terrible than Hades, though; there are certain myths (e.g. Sisyphus and Orpheus) where she’s the one who says ‘Hades, babe, shall we give this guy a chance to make his way out of the Underworld alive?’ HOWEVER, she did usually do this with the implementation of specific terms, meaning that she had a level of control in proceedings which a lot of other wife goddesses didn’t have over their respective spouses’ spheres. Most mythological canons also give her and Hades a very healthy and monogamous relationship (with the exception of Orphism, which is a bit more iffy on that front) so, disregarding the abduction part of her myth, their marriage was really relatively healthy, even by modern standards. Also, Persephone did not ‘lay the smack down on sinners’, as quoted in the original post - the whole idea of sinners is basically a Christian concept. The Underworld was not Hell. It wasn’t a place for bad people. It was just where the dead went. Tartarus was the place where the really bad guys went to be tortured and shit, and is more indicative of Christian notions of Hell. People weren’t punished in the Underworld. They just went there. I love the idea of Persephone as a consenting wife of Hades. I am a fan of modern reinterpretations in which she chooses to eat the pomegranate seeds willingly, or where she falls in love with Hades and goes to the Underworld of her own accord. However, these are modern interpretations, based on modern gender politics and ideas of reclamation and representation. I will forever fight for people’s right to reinterpret myths however they like, but this whole idea of the ‘original myth’ of Persephone being devoid of any misogynistic undertones really needs to die. I think it also speaks to a worrying argument that in order to empower Persephone, some people need to remove her trauma. Why can’t Persephone be a terrible dread queen of the Underworld and a survivor? Why should her experiences need to be erased in order to make her into a strong woman? If you ask me, she’s already stronger than Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. I don’t think that the modern need to reframe Persephone as architect of her own descent into the Underworld is necessarily as progressive as others think it is. I think it sends the message that a strong woman always has agency, and I actually think that a better message to send would be that it’s totally possible to lose your agency and still retain your strength, because you define yourself through your own actions, not what is done to you. tl;dr any post that makes a broad sweeping claim like ‘hey this greek myth was originally like this and u r all wrong’ without any sources is what my tutor would call ‘specious’ and what I call ‘bollocks’.” Courtesy of teashoesandhair on tumblr.

When the story goes like this, it's a bit more heartbreaking. Imagine if Persephone fell in love with Hades, and wanted to be with him, but at the same time didn't want to leave her mother's side. Being forced to split her time between them, knowing they will both be miserable without her.

I like this version of Demeter where she didn’t send the earth into a barren and cold wasteland to make a point to Zeus to give her their daughter back, it was more out of utter grief that her daughter was gone and she could only assume the worst. And how she wants her daughter to still be with her but also knows Persephone is also happy in the Underworld with Hades.

I love the symbolism in the character’s eyes and in Persephone’s hair. Maybe It’s accidental, but I like to think that, in the characters eyes, the purple is because their find or they’re doing “their thing”, and the pink is when they’re having strong positive feelings, like happiness or love; like at the beginning, when Demeter is happy doing her job (or maybe because, for her, her daughter is the love of her life), and Persephone’s eyes are full gray, because she is happy, but not specially happy, and she hasn’t found her “full thing” yet, until that moment, she just was her mother’s companion. Hermes’ eyes are purple all the time because he was doing his job (“his thing”) as messenger god during all the short. When Hermes just came to the Underworlds, Hades’ eyes are more pink than before (still purple, but more a pinkish purple); Hermes’ eyes are more pink when he is explaining to Hades the situation because he is happy assuming the hero’s role in this story (they became purple again at the moment he saws Persephone). When Hermes first sees the new Persephone, her eyes are full pink, like, she is totally in love and happy now; so, when it’s zoomed in on her face, It's not just pink, but pink with purple! She is happy, in love, and found “her thing”; her role a Queen of the Underworld. Then, when Hades explains her what’s happening, her eyes are pink than purple, not for the love to Hades this time, but for the love to her mother (or, maybe, because even hearing all what her mother is doing upside, she still loving her husband, one of the two). When Hades says goodbye to Persephone and gives her the pomegranate, his eyes are full purple, like, he is doing his duty, what is right; but, when Persephone is going with Hermes, looking back at him, Hades’ eyes are full purple, BUT!, with a pink dot, a symbol of hope, and that he will still love her, and waiting for her, even if she is gone. When Persephone is back, her eyes are gray again, because she is very far from her role and her love. Then, both, Persephone and Demeter have gray eyes, because Demeter can’t be happy if her daughter isn’t happy. Then, at the moment Persephone eats the pomegranate, her eyes became a darker shade of pink, because he is doing a sacrifice for love, like, a very passionate love here… And then her eyes are full normal pink again at the moment she is totally transformed and sees Hades again. She is totally in love and that’s all she could think at this moment. Or maybe the purple eyes just represent negative feelings (the pink still being the same); and in Hades, his eyes represented obsession at first, later sadness because he is letting his queen go; and Persephone’s eyes were pink-purple at the Underworld because, even when she was in love and happy, she still scared and missing her mom. Hermes’ eyes were purple because he fears all this Demeter situation. And Demeter’s eyes were purple she was looking for Persephone, then when she is seeing her transformed into Underworld’s queen, and then, when she is going. Then, Persephone’s eyes are pink-purple at the ending because, even when she is happy of going with her husband, she still knows that she is going to miss her mom. At the end, Demeter’s eyes are gray, but you can see a little of pink, because, even when she is going to miss her daughter, at least knows Persephone is going to be happy. And in Persephone’s hair. At the beginning Persephone’s hair is tied, and with the white floral headdress as a symbolism of chastity and innocence. Persephone’s fiery hair, obviously, is a symbolism of her new role as the queen of the Underworld. When Persephone is back, Demeter puts the white headdress on her again, waiting things to get back to normal again; just that Persephone’s hair is down, not tied; like, something actually changed and isn't exactly the same than before; can't be the same. Then, when Persephone eats the pomegranate and transforms again, her fairy hair completely destroys the headdress; her chastity and innocence is long gone, and it can't be brought back; now, the metamorphosis into her new role is complete. Beautiful.

4 years later and i still simp this video :D the art, the execution of the story, the symbolism. My favorite is the whole thing with her garland of flowers. When Demeter was grieving and winter came she preserved the garland and kept it from changing. Then it blew in her face as she saw her daughter change. Mwah

I love how this myth seems to try and explain the seasons. That's why I love mythologies, they're always rooted in something man is trying to understand about the natural and human world.
