Listen to the reed how it tells a tale
For it is complaining of separations
Ever since they cut me down from the forest
Men and women have cried towards me
I want a heart torn from separation
So that I can tell the pain of passion
Whoever stays far from their roots
longs to return to that state of union
For I have grieved in every gathering
I have accompanied the happy and the unhappy
Everyone befriended me through their will
But none sought out my secrets from within me
My secret is not far from my cry
but it is not the light for the eye and ear
Body is not veiled from soul, or soul from body
yet none is permitted to see the soul
This sound of the reed is fire, not wind
whoever does not have this fire becomes nothing
It is the fire of love that is in the reed
It is the fervour of love that is in the drink
The reed comforts anyone who has lost a friend
For its strains has pierced our hearts
Who has seen a poison and antidote like the reed?
Who has seen a passionate and intimate companion like the reed?
The reed tells of the way full of blood
and recounts stories of the passion of Majnun.
Only to the senseless is this sense confided
For the tongue has no customer but the ear
In our woe, the days have become untimely
Days travelled together with burning griefs
If days are gone, let them go, for it does not matter
But you remain, for nothing is as pure as you
Everyone but the fish have quenched their thirst
Whoever is without daily bread finds the day long
The raw does not understand the state of the ripe
Therefore, my words must be brief, farewell
Break your chains and be free, O son
How long will you be a slave of silver and gold?
If you pour the ocean into a pot
Will it hold more than one day's fortune?
The greedy eye, like the pot, is never full
Until the oyster is content, it does not make pearl
Whoever embraces love from within
is cleansed of greed and all defect
Be glad, O love, our partner in trade
O healer of all our defects
O remedy of our pride and vanity
O you, our Plato and our Galen
Through love the earthly body soared to skies
the mountain began to dance and became nimble
Love inspired Mount Sinai, O lover
Sinai under a spell and Moses unconscious
As the reed presses its lips
I too, like the reed, tell all that to be told
Whoever is parted from one who speaks their language
Becomes mute, though he may have a hundred songs
When the flower is gone and the garden faded
you will no longer hear the nightingale’s story
The beloved is all and the lover is just a veil
the beloved is alive and the lover is dead
For if love was not seeking one
they would be like a bird without wings
How can I have consciousness before or after?
when the light of my beloved is not before me and after
Love wills that this word comes forth
If a mirror does not reflect, what use is it?
Do you know why your mirror does not reflect?
Because the rust has not been cleared from its face
