I am not sure why the reporter asked Putin about religion. Most Americans are not religious. Most Europeans in western Europe are not religious. So why try to pin him down on religion. If he is Russian then he is probably Russian Orthodox, not Roman Catholic nor Southern Baptist. On the issue of corruption. I find that very interesting that he does not know how to address corruption. I would expect someone who is not European to say that, but the European Enlightenment already addressed that issue. You need a transparent system. You need division of power into several offices (executive, legislative, judicial). Each office having to power check the others. You need a multi-party system so there is no collusion. People in different political parties are in opposition. When members of different political party share the office of government they are less likely to collude. You need a robust legal system. Once judges are appointed they cannot lose their position. That way judges are independent. Legal judgements must be enforced. One person or one group of people cannot have absolute power. An absolutist government is corrupt, because you cannot regulate nor punish corruption. The absolutist makes the laws, enforces the laws, can change the law at any time, can dismiss a legal judgement, can remove a judge, and do anything the absolutist wants. An absolutist hold authority through its police or military. An absolutist is not elected. An absolutist is not transparent. Did Putin say that the Russian voting system is not transparent, because that is the Russian way. Maybe Putin and the Russian people never heard about the European Enlightenment. Which is really strange. Because in Tolstoy's War and Peace Pierre Bezuhkov is well aware of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. So why is corruption so bad in Russia? Putin does not know. Or maybe Putin does know.
