A couple of comments: I’m a retired dentist. I used to tell my patients the two minutes it takes to floss your teeth every day is the cheapest and the best insurance you can buy to prevent gum disease and cavities between the teeth. 6 years ago my wife and I moved from New England to the desert Southwest. I’m astounded by the number of people I see with sun damaged skin. You bet I use a moisturizer with SPF 20 every morning. Great video, Ash. Personal grooming is not that difficult or time consuming. The return on investment is well worth it.

In addition to daily oral care (brushing, flossing, etc.) - everyone should get regular professional dental hygienist treatments. No matter how good you are at brushing and flossing, it is almost inevitable that there will be at least some build up of tartar on the teeth, and especially at (and below) the gum lines. This can only be removed by a trained professional using specialised tools. The amount of tartar buildup is going to vary by individual, depending on factors such as individual body chemistry, diet, overall gum condition, etc. But consulting with a professional dental practice will tell you how often you need dental hygiene treatments. FAILING to removal dental tartar will inevitably lead to inflammation, loss of gum and jawbone tissue, bleeding, and eventually tooth loss. Make regular dental hygienist appointments a part of your life, and you will enjoy happy teeth and gums until you reach a very, very advanced age. Modern dental hygiene is one of the great unsung benefits of living in the 21st century. Take advantage of it.

Great dental hygiene can be also be supported by elimination of all sugar in any form, all highly processed foods, any form of processed flour, corn, and rice. In other words a dietary approach of real food. If it comes in a package or can or has a bar code don’t buy or eat it. I’m 76 and have no dental issues. It’s no accident. I intend it to be this way.

You were talking about how multi-blade cartridge razors are bad for your skin. Reminded me of an old Mad TV commercial parody about a 20-bladed razor, and they explained what each blade does. I think the 10th blade removed any cavities.

I will echo some other comments and your words. Floss daily (it is part of my bedtime ritual). My dentist told me that the average American spends 30 seconds once a day on teeth. It makes periodontists rich. One periodontist I used had a sign on his wall: "You do not have to floss your teeth. Only the ones you want to keep!' There are now so many great shaving products that shaving has become a bit of a pleasure. I have followed you as a shaving mentor and bought a Merkur double edged razor. What a pleasure! When I started shaving the only double edged razor was the Gillette and that one did not work on my face. Nicks ever time. Now, the Merkur razor works so well and quickly that shaving takes very little time. Great fun! Terrific video.

I don't wear graphic or printed t-shirts though, they look so peasant-like. No sophistication at all especially for men passed their teen years.

Lots of preparation - try using a preshave on the skin and be mindful that there are razors that are more aggressive than others. Start with a mild razor and blade and progress to more keen steel as your skin gets used to the process. Remember, you will turn a corner and your skin will cease to react badly to the razor and shaving will become a joy - YOU JUST NEED TO KEEP GOING!!
@gammondog
@gammondog 5 месяцев назад
Get a sample pack of assorted blades from an online store and follow the protocol. Work your way up from mild to more aggressive brand of blade. Spend a week on each one to develop a sound experience for comparison. Then move on to the next brand in the sample pack. Eventually, you will find a good match between blade and razor.

You didn't mention electric shavers....What are your thoughts on those, are they pukka, or in your opinion is the double-edged razor the the only way? Also shaving that closely every day, I've always worried might that not be harmful in the long-term for your skin? I've always thought once every two days might be better for that reason....
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 10 месяцев назад
The electric razor provides an inferior shave in almost every case to a shave with a blade (wet shave situation) as they are generally rather blunt and the lack of lubricating cream can cause abrasions and other rashes. I personally find the DE wet shaving experience to have positively improved my overall skin health over the years. It could be the daily regime of moisturizing, or the exfoliating effect of the actual shave, but it has been the most positive change I ever made to my grooming routine.

Hard to beat a Rockwell 6s if you are looking to spend a few dollars. Otherwise, the King C Gillette basic DE razor is a great starting point for almost no money.

I KNOW that I may be in the minority with this one but I’d like to recommend that gents with body jewelry (piercings) keep the sites clean and the jewelry shiny. As one who sports a few small and tasteful (imho) piercings, I think it’s repulsive to see chaps with dirty jewelry and grimy piercings. I’m sure there are those who will find any type of piercing on a chap repulsive andl distasteful. Speaking for myself, I prefer to mix traditional sartorial elegance with a dash of modern edginess.

Must admit, I still use cartridges - albeit ancient ones - Wilkinson Sword Protector. Why? I like the handle - designed by an Industrial Design hero - Sir Kenneth Grange. I have several - very comfortable design, great to use. However, the cartridges are getting harder to find, and when I do purchase them they don’t seem as sharp as they once were…..so, I may need to change to blades at some point when I can’t buy them anymore……

A comment about beards: oiling a beard is not just about appearance, I did not and wound up with skin flaking underneath. Jojoba oil works well. A month ago I shaved it off and am happier and more comfortable. I have had a moustache for over fifty years, so that remains. Gum disease is no fun. It runs in my family. It requires gum surgery to correct. Brush and floss. The more time spent on teeth the better. It pays off. I spend ten minutes at night. And more than shoes can be bought on ebay. Clothing, cashmere scarves, coats and blazers, etc. Great fun.

I have none and would not really want my son to have any, as my father, a former soldier and sailor in the Merchant Navy also never sported any 'ink'. I understand these skin adornments are treasured by the modern generation - but I fear for them in the future, when the youthful exuberance for 'skin art' has transitioned to middle age and the full sleeve tattoos seem less relevant in a responsible job.
