This video came up for me on a Black Madonna adjacent search and I decided to watch it as I worked on a rosary to my dark mother, Hekate. I couldn’t believe how many similarities I had to your experiences. Hekate/The Dark Mother showed for me almost a year after my mother died. The more I connected to her the more crows and ravens started showing up. In my experience too I don’t connect with traditional images of her. I see a cloaked figure whose face is always hidden but I can sense their facial expressions sometimes. When she first showed for me she was in earth, buried next to me. Only then was she the face of decay. Her name came to me in that moment. But listening to your experiences has me rethinking things. I appreciate this video very much.

I love this video. I don’t know who my personal Madonna is, but when my mom got sick I was very drawn to working with Kwan Yin. Did meditations with her. I’m still really new to accepting spirituality as part of my life. This video was very helpful and I will make finding my personal Madonna after watching this video. I love how you describe the signs she has left for you. Being open to receiving signs and accepting them as real is something that I’m also working on. Thank you for being open and honest.xoxo

Thank you so much for this video! After a long time of searching I felt like I have been found by Mother Mary around in May. But I wanted to dive deeper into who this being is under all the patriarchal control of the church. I have always felt drawn to the “darker” side of things and felt that there was another side to the Blessed Mother that we don’t often see. That is when I came across the term “Black Madonna” and ever since then I have been hooked. The way you described the Black Madonna is exactly how I have been experiencing her. The few books that I could find come close but not as deep as you explained. I will continue to feel her essence within and around me, especially within art and the natural world.

I really like how you can explain something so deep, you clearly have a great sensibility that is truly inspiring.

I can’t tell you how grateful I am that you shared this. When you described Madonna as “the mother you need,” it felt like my heart cracked open. So much began to make sense about my experience of the one I call Ma. I think I’ve been trying to put her in a box that fits neatly in with descriptions and images that can be found in books and icons, but really she’s so much more than any one person can describe or depict. I see her in soft watercolors that move and play together on paper. She has the eyes of a doe and the wings of a heron. She sounds like water and the music of the harp. She is sunshine and warmth and color. I haven’t found any one picture or set of pictures that depict her the way I see her, although the Margarete Petersen Tarot comes close-ish. I’m sure I’ll know it when I see her.

I wasn't aware that an individual's Personal Madonna could be found outside Catholicism, so this video helped me understand the term. I love the idea that your Personal Madonna is what you need your mother to be. My relationship with my mother is the most difficult relationship I've had in my life, and I know I've looked to religion to make up for that. In fact, not being able to connect to a feminine energy is one of the things that drove me away from Christianity when I was a child-the Christianity I was raised with was very masculine, and it couldn't meet my needs. I know that I have had a mothering energy in my life that came from spirit, which I felt especially close to when I was a child. At the time I would have said that she was lunar, like a moon goddess, but since I've become an adult I've felt her energy shift into something else that I can't quite define yet. I'm definitely still in the process of relearning how she wants to talk to me. Anyways, I'm really glad that you posted this video, because I needed the reminder to spend some time connecting with her. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing how you connect to your personal Madonna and what you said about how our personal Madonna is all that we need/ed our mother to be, really resonates with me. I was recently inspired by a reading I received to acquire a miniature Black Madonna of Einsiedeln - our Lady of the Hermits - and when I held her, I was moved to tears. She seems to represent unconditional love and a reminder to take care of the inner child.💜 I also think that the Black Madonna is Durga, a Hindu triple goddess, who destroyed the two terrible demons of pride and self-deprecation. 🙏

Thank you for this video. I love it . I lost my earthly mother almost ten years ago . Miss her so much. I also have been a “ Catholic “ convert for years . The past few years I have not been involved with the church but like you I have kept parts of it . I have been fascinated with the Black Madonna . I also relate to the Morrigan .

Where to start? I am Palestinian, and I am a bit of a folklorist. I reconnected with Mary when I learned that her spirit was believed to live inside the village well. The well is also the site of the Visitation and the Magnificat. Being from a family that's Muslim and Christian, Mary is a bridging figure for my ancestor work. I used the well in meditation, and met with her in a striking vision. I was disappointed at the time bc I'm not Catholic, so I thought "this isn't really my thing..." Fast forward to deciding I wanted to work with personified deity in my practice (which is very eclectic). I saw a video form Uplift Herbs re: Mary's "left hand path" that really clicked with me. She is what I had been looking for: a figure of perfect justice, who won't offer platitudes or victim blaming but the promise of true justice. I've since ordered a fantastic print of her from a protest sign w/ snippets from the Magnificat ("cast down the mighty/uplift the lowly"), and a print of Mary Untier of Knots where the rope looks like a chain she dissolves into light. So in devotions, I wrote my own spell which references her as 'Water of Life' since my ancestors for centuries drank, bathed, did everything with that holy water... And I have syncretized her with other Justice deities, borrowing epithets from Nemesis in her role as "Justice-Queen."

I'm grateful to have found this and your video on personal Madonnas. Ive always had a deep love of La Madonna, which in part comes from my Noni who was also a devotee. My dedication to La Madonna continued throughout a period of dissolutionment with the Catholic Church. Now I feel Folk Catholic and am learning to set aside the "man-made BS." I didn't always connect with the Virgin Mary as she is presented by thr church and my heart hurt as she was taken out of liturgy slowly over my childhood. As an adult i tried to find her through other goddesses. I always felt there was more to her than how the Church wanted to represent her. I always felt the Mother was a goddess in her own right. That she was the same as other Heavenly Queens and Gaia the earth mother. I feel more confident in my ability to give life to La Madonna's other faces. To me she is strength. And she is protection. And she has multiple faces. I look forward to deepening my devotion to my personal Madonna and learning her multiple facets. I also really connect with "La Madonna" as the terminology I use, which connects me to my Italian heritage but also feels like a name of strength. I also love "Blessed Mother" for a more caring face and Gaia when i connect with her through nature. She is my many faced Madonna for now. Thank you again!

Hello there from Scorpion Moon Tarot old account. I tried to do the catholic bit the "right" way after a very bad spiritual encounter with an entity for a year, but I've come to accept I just can't. I went through the binge and purge and gave up MY Black Madonna, Santa Muerte, with respect and a deep sadness because I was scared into believing I was bad for working with her. All that resulted is I dreamed and pined about Tarot cards and Santa Muerte for a year until I finally said screw it and decided I can't be anything but myself. I'm glad I've been tucking away these video of yours and your book because they've been a guiding light as I struggled with my spirituality. Thank you.

Thank you for sharing your story. My personal Madonna is Our Lady of Perpetual Help, and she found (and has continued to find) me. I went 37 years without seeing this image despite growing up Catholic, but last year she made herself known to me by showing up in random places again and again. I am still trying to sort out what I am supposed to be learning from her, but my devotion to her is strong. Hearing you say that she’s the mother you need hit me in the gut. To me, she’s more than just unconditional love and a warm embrace. She’s compassion and empathy when there is fear, doubt, and pain. She’s a support and a guide.

Hearing this I remembered a story my uncle always was telling me about two Italians descendents neiborhoods of my town fighting with each other for a figure of a black Madonna and stealing her. And nobody knows what happened with her. Beautiful video anyway. Xoxo
