In this episode of the Perspective Prog. Based on 'The Himalayan Crisis'. Several roads and over 600 houses in Joshimath in Uttarakhand, the gateway town to the Badrinath temple have developed cracks over the past few weeks, causing panic and protests among the local population. While a high level meeting of officials from Centre, state govt and agencies like NDMA, GIS and NIH took stock of the situation on Sunday, the Supreme Court declined an urgent hearing on a plea relating to the incident. Based on recommendations by an expert panel tasked by the centre to assess the sinking of the ground surface in Joshimath, the authorities began demolition process of two hotels. Affected families are also being provided shelter by the state govt. According to experts, Joshimath city has been built on an ancient landslide material - meaning it rests on a deposit of sand and stone, not rock, which doesn’t have high load-bearing capacity. This makes the area extremely vulnerable to ever-burgeoning infrastructure and population.

Key takeaways- Causes- 1. Problem since last 50 years. 2. Rapidly approved road and construction projects. 3. Lies in the seismic zone 5 4. Located on the paleolandslide, sensitive to earthquakes conducted during the construction activities. 5. Unchecked deforestation. 6. Illegal land mining and construction. 7. Over crowded by people. Learnings from this incident- 1. Sustainable Development Norms should be followed. 2. Only rapidly approved projects guarantee the development, this idealogy should not be propogated. 3. Cater to the demands of activists. 4. Development style should be different as compared to the plain areas. 5. Strict policy enforcement. 6. Mishra committee recommendations should be followed in construction. What steps now should be taken to overcome the issue- 1. Demolish the buildings which have got crack. 2. Stop all constructions works with immediate effect 3. Safe evacuation of people should be ensured. 4. All the necessary help should be announced by the respective govt, authorities responsible for the people of joshimath.

Today, Joshimath on Sinking mode. Who is Responsible? PL remember, Blamed to Someone is very easy but actually don't blame to anybody else W/O any Scientifically evidence or Concrete reasons. In my opinion, Global atmospheric pressure models on the Joshimath mountain circles are best concern with Today's Himalayan Crisis. Almighty Saves to all from Natural calamities. 💐🙏💐

Himalayas specific model homes and tourist buildings should be made by public-private partnership. These will serves as examples for people to build their own homes. For this states in Himalayas should build research institutes for mountain specific infra development.

If I governed the state, I’d have made sure ppl are following sustainable norms and ways of lifestyle in the area. Including officials and their infra projects.
