This was the ballad of my marching shoe my sophomore year. Our theme was a tribute to the armed services and the solos were played as trumpets. We won that year and everytime I hear this song it brings back all the memories and it brings tears to my eyes. I'm going to miss it so much
I m an oboe player too... instead of having to little people we have to many and most believe that once there in they don't need to practice so our tone quality and innovation is not so good....
Played this my senior year in high school. My friends and I joked about it sounding like something out of LotR. We also liked it because there were no mallet percussion parts and we were lazy seniors, but it gave us a chance to really listen and enjoy it :)
I switched from trumpet to horn, and I love horn 2 part in this song. I'm used to 1st trumpet part having the melody and the other parts just for harmony, but on horn I see it's different. Both parts are independent, and I actually like 2nd part better! This song though is amazing! I like how it starts in c minor and modulates to its relative major key of Eb, and then shifts to and ends in the key of F. I here lots of songs do that and it's beautiful. My favorite part is when the flutes come in near the beginning, playing a short part in the major key, and then it goes back to minor.
Just performed this for all region bands as a trumpet! Such a good piece. Its amazing how much emotion the players and the director can put into this. I actually teared up on stage. Which is something I never do.
yea im gunna be a sophomore in band. there are only 5 other people in band in my grade. its sad how much we all learn. the trumpet player also learned tuba and french horn, as did the trombone. the flute player is special needs, but is still really good. the percussionist doesnt care. the sax player is just amazing. and then there's me, the clarinet, bassclarinet, oboe, flute, sax, bassoon, trombone and baritone player.
I wish my band was capable of playing music like this. I'm the only person in my band that owns and has played soprano sax, and I'm a trumpet player lol. That's the one thing I hate about being a small town school, there's just little to no musical exposure for our students and they have no drive to challenge themselves.
@shinglesofzeflute we won. trumpets had a trio with this. we played each time you tell their story, summer dances, this, and raging machines. we closed with each time you tell their story. that last 40 seconds was so beautiful it brought tears to my eyes. im from lewis cass btw. class d state champs
I'm so excited to play this.... District Band 2012- first chair alto sax ♥ I got the solo... I hope I can do it justice. This piece is so beautiful.. I get chills. Tears welled up in my eyes as I followed along with my music. Beautiful.
@LilmissDrummajor2012 I am playing this for my All-District band too :) i'm second flute. I played Solas Ane last year in my school band on bass clarinet and fell in love with Hazo's gorgeous pieces! Good luck on that solo :)))
It is just beautiful. It makes me cry everytime. I love this piece of music! Samuel Hazo is an excellent composer. Hope he can compose more music like this. It's a pity that I have no chance to play this music T.T
i played this in symphonic band this piece is very musical only one page of music but it is still difficult to play effectively. to paint the crowd a beautiful picture of the rolling hills in ireland or scotland one of the two
we're doing this at our concert this coming friday evening..... I've discovered that it's very difficult to play the clarinet and cry at the same time....
Still get goosebumps when I listen to this song. It's so incredibly beautiful. I played the chimes part for this when my band performed it. I played the shit out of that part too.
I think that only those who truly love and appreciate music can feel their emotions welling up inside them. I played this last year, and every time I was on the verge of tears.
This song means so much to me. My band director conducted this song before he left is for another school, and it brought everyone to tears, even himself. I really moss him.....
My director decided that our next concert would be a samuel hazo concert and so far we have sevens, ride, and alleluia, but I really want to do this one as well!
played this freshman year as 3rd chair trumpet on 2nd part. best slow song ive ever played. it was kinda funny cause we followed this with The Washington Post March :D

Our symphonic band played it and it was BEAUTIFUL 😻 this song in general is well put together and shows every instruments best ability 👌🏽 and this song makes me cry (TEARS OF JOY) 😊.
Grace Shell I played euph on this piece. Low brass only had white notes. Maybe a quarter note here and there. Still my favorite piece 😍 Try First Suite in E flat.
