In Slovene, the iris flower is called "perunika". I heard that it's because of its shape, which resembles the thunder symbol,

So Veles unlike Loki, just messes with Perun for good fun.

Not only because of his trickster nature, it is said that Veles was also concerned about the world of the dead having no light and he thus borrowed Yarilo to grow grass and meadows in the Nav, since he's a god of animals and nature.

The legend I was always told was that Perun stole Volos’s wife so Volos stole Perun’s cattle as hostages (didn’t work) then his wife as a hostage (didn’t work) and his son as a hostage (didn’t work) but when Perun’s wife had Volos’s child who caused an eternal winter Perun allowed Volos’s wife to bring her down to the Nav each year so Volos could see them both

Its not that the West slavs or south slavs or east slavs worshipped different gods or anything like that, rather each tribe would favour a specific God so like you said for some reason "Minor" god Mokosh was mostly worshipped in the east. That is simply not true Mokosh was worshipped by everyone(all tribes) shes part of our rituals, and celebrations and she is a goddess, not what you called a "minor" god. That includes all of the gods, deities, demons, spirits etc etc. Difference just is that some tribes favoured some gods so that became their so to call "main god" so some tribes favoured Weles/Veles while others Favoured Perun or even both, Mokosh including all gods were a big part of our faith so its not true to say that specific region like east slavs worshipped only Mokosh many tribes there just favoured her but that doesn't mean they didn't worship other gods like perun, svarog or dadzbog A pantheon of the slavic god exists and its hierarchy, it is known about. I recommend to check out Slavic Affairs his video about slavic mythology or our pagan religion "Rodnovery" or in polish Rodzimowiara

Alternatively it was all about water. Veles was not only god of the underground and forests but also water. Slavs must have noticed that water tends to go up if it gets warm (morning mists dissipating, steam, evaporation) and when rain or storms happened, Veles was claiming what was his. Alternatively Yarilo was seen as their son by both gods and they had him with Morana/Zhiva who could have been same being with 2 manifestations depending on in which realm was Yarilo currently in. If he was in Perun's realm, she was happy and lively and life was blooming and if he was with Veles she was sad and cold and winter came and she couldn't see him (because either Perun or Devana wouldn't allow it... cuz you know spicy family dynamic between a woman, her ex-lover, her husband AND her daughter who is also married to her ex-lover and step mom to her half brother).

No...wrong.Perun is son of Svarog or Rod hence one of them is the top god.....dwpending on the country which interpritates the pantheon
@brendannobleauthor3251
@brendannobleauthor3251 2 года назад
While, yes, he is typically considered the son of one of them, Perun was considered the highest god by many tribes. From the scattered tales, it seems like there was a kind of inheritance, where Perun took up the supreme sky figure that Svarog had once held, and Svarog became more of a remote god. Of course, there were many tribes and each had slightly different beliefs.

Perun should be pronounced with the stress or accent on the first syllable. PEH-rune. The r is not like the English “R”. It’s a short rolled R. Very similar to the Spanish one, which sounds more like a soft “d” than an R. If you can’t roll your rr’s, I suggest faking it with a d that is made with a soft touch of the tongue to the palate not a hard, heavy D.
@Morrov
@Morrov 3 года назад
The name for this single "roll" is a tap :) And stressing the second syllable is fine, it's how the people in the East pronounce it.

Not real familiar with this region but curious....is it possible the different regions focused on different dieties because of the geography or weather? For instance, storms & thunder are most places, so I would expect a myth about this phenomenon.
@brendannobleauthor3251
@brendannobleauthor3251 3 года назад
Likely, yes. Demons in particular. The Ala/chala is a demon that is most prominent among South Slavs because of some of the storms the Balkans got from the sea that don't happen in Russia as often. Pagan religions were impacted by their environment, so of course that makes sense!

Perun vs Veles wasn't order vs chaos (Veles was actually also a god of wisdom). Perun vs Zmaj (or zmey - dragon) was order vs chaos (like Amon Ra vs Apophis).

So I am not sure where you are getting the idea that it's the oldest god who is the ruler but... No. It's way more complicated. The sky-father is usually the youngest of three brothers. It's more complicated. Even though today we tend to think of monolithic pantheons all pantheons were localized. Also in modern thinking the sky father is the good guy and the underworld God is the bad guy. Not true. Gods were morally complex.
