Peruvian daffodils are fragrant, exotic-looking flowers are relatives of the amaryllis. The bulbs are winter hardy perennials in zones 8-10. In cooler areas, hymenocallis may be treated as an annual or the bulbs may be brought indoors for the winter. Hymenocallis is known by many different names, which include Ismene, spider lily, Peruvian daffodil and summer daffodil.
The flowers of hymenocallis resemble daffodils, with a central cup surrounded by petals that are typically much narrower and longer than those of a daffodil. The color of the flowers is usually white, though some are cream or yellow. The blossoms are intensely fragrant, especially after dark.
Hymenocallis have long, strappy leaves, similar to those of an amaryllis. The foliage typically emerges first, followed by the flower stalk with a cluster of 3 to 5 buds.
In areas where the bulbs are hardy (zones 8-10), they may be planted directly into the garden. Choose a sunny or mostly sunny spot that provides some shelter from wind. Most importantly, make sure the soil is very well drained. Hymenocallis need moisture in the spring, but the soil should be quite dry during summer, fall and winter.
In colder areas, hymenocallis are usually grown in pots. This makes it easier to provide the well-drained growing conditions they need. You can also simply bring the pots indoors for the winter. Choose a container that will provide ample root space. Like amaryllis, the bulbs produce lots of fleshy roots that need plenty of room to expand. Plant 1 bulb per 8" diameter pot or 3 bulbs in a 15" diameter pot.
When planting, the base of the bulb's neck should be even with the soil surface. Water sparingly until the bulbs sprout.
Once the bulbs have sprouted and are in active growth, water them as often as needed to keep the soil evenly moist. If you live in a rainy climate, make sure the soil does not become water-logged. Fertilize monthly. After the flowers have faded, you may either discard the bulbs or save them for next year.
If you want to save the bulbs, remove the flower stalk after the flowers have faded. Allow the leaves to continue growing. If the bulbs are in pots, move them to a place where the soil will stay dry.
In zones 3-7 the bulbs need to be brought indoors before the first frost. Put them in a cool place (55-60°F) for the winter and keep the soil dry. When spring comes, check to see if the bulbs are root-bound. If so, transplant to a larger pot. Move the pot outdoors after all danger of frost.

Can you believe mine came back?! I’m zone 6b! I did not mulch them or anything!! They are in part shade and in an area of heavy water runoff… there’s no reason they should have survived except that this past winter was unseasonably mild (except for a few days that were unseasonably cold). Very cool flowers!

Hi Danielle, wow the Peruvian daffodils are so cool! I've never seen them before. Thanks for sharing your knowledge about it, and this beautiful bulb with us! I will be on the lookout for some to plant in the spring. 😍

I've got them blooming here in the dappled shade in zone 8b, Central Texas. Summers are dry, dry, dry! People are always amazed how they bloom in the shade. And my favorite part is how unusual the flower is!

They are beautiful. They multiply fast. I'm in zone 8b and started with just 2 plants, just a few years ago. They will bloom in full sun to shade here. The eastern lubber grasshopper love to eat the blooms. Yesterday I learned the Spanish moth caterpillar eats the leaves. I believe they come in two colors white and red. I only have white so far.

@zaneymay do you need to dig them up like she explained in the video? I am in 7B/8A so am curious if that is necessary?

Last year I bought one and really enjoyed the unusual bloom. I did overwinter mine in the basement in a paper bag. I love unusual bulbs. I have pineapple lillies that I also overwinter in a large pot in my basement. Also, have your Brodiaea bloomed this year? Mine are blooming now and have been in the same spot for 4 years. Thanks for the beautiful video.

It looks a lot like the wild sea lilies we have here on the beaches in Italy. Like, a-lot a-lot, I wonder how closely they are related the the ones from Peru. Maybe a seed swam over a few thousand years ago? ^^

I planted mine with the necks buried about 6” deep! They’ve been in huge pots for 5 years- I give them water once the leaves start to show- (zone 9, dry summers), never fed them, & they bloom every spring for me (April or may)… Maybe you could experiment with planting yours deeper to see if they overwinter for you?

Thanks for your video, my issue is that the package it came in said to plant the bulb 8" below ground level from the tip or point of the bulb. I did and it is now May 16th and it has 2 leave 3" above the dirt. I wonder if it will be ok as yours are sticking a hair above ground level.

I originally purchased a few bulbs two seasons ago(zone 5/6). Lots of stroppy leaves and I’ve successfully overwintered to the point where I now have two large clumps that I potted in fresh soil and yes above soil level much like amaryllis. Unfortunately NO flowers:(. Any tips tricks????

My peruvian daffodil stalks flop over and the stalks go every other direction but up. Is this normal? I notice you holding your stalk up straight as if its not noramlly straight. Are they simply just too top heavy? And what is going on with all the daffodil stalks just going every which way?
