STORYLINE:
Keiko Fujimori, a politician and daughter of Peru's former president Alberto Fujimori, stood in a Lima court on Monday to face accusations of money laundering.
Fujimori has spent 18 months in prison since 2018 as part of a preventive measure not to obstruct justice in the same probe.
The prosecutor has requested 30 years of prison against Fujimori and other people accused in a scheme of hiding money used to finance both Fujimori campaigns in 2011 and 2016.
Fujimori, according to the accusations, may have obtained and laundered up to $17.3 million, 1.2 of which were allegedly obtained from the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht.
Four former Peruvian presidents and other local politicians were also investigated for similar accusations in Latin America's corruption scandal.
According to the U.S. Justice Department, Odebrecht representatives paid roughly $788 million in bribes associated with more than 100 public works projects paid in 12 countries including Argentina, Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala and Venezuela.
$29 million went to Peruvian officials from 2005-2014.
Prosecutor José Domingo Pérez accuses Fujimori of hiding the funds in false records of contributions for cocktail parties, raffles and other activities.
In addition to Keiko Fujimori, there are more than 40 people implicated.
