Man Jack you are hitting it out of the park with all these High Effeciency baskets. Theres so many- Wafo, Uni, Pesado, etc etc even Flair has their own one now. I was able to go to Mischief store and grab 2x spirot clones at $20 each. The clogging is definitely an issue over time. I now put a 58mm wet-n-dried bottom paper filter at the bottom. It works out well. The puck comes out intact and clean. No more sink play. The work flows is like as if you used a 54mm paper filter on an IMS or Vst basket. Keeping it at 6-7bar smooths thing out too. Pulling 9-bars on a HE basket requires too fine of a grind = overextracting even at a 2:1 ratio. At 6-7 bars things come out real nice for 2.5:1 or 3:1 on light roasts. Light roasts are heavenily when pulled right. I hope you can try this out and share your thoughts on your upcoming videos. As youve becomed a qualified H.E basket expert we'd love to get your thoughts. Keep inspiring and stay forever caffeinated 🤙🤙🤙🤙
Oh its also not expensive at all. Pesado really is worth a consideration. Recently I am just too hooked on filter coffee, have not used my Espressomachine for such a long time. Timemore B75 really was a gamechanger.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I have heard the Orea is a very good Brewer. I thought about buying it, but honestly you are already at 100 Bucks for the whole package. The Timemore B75 was just 10, it is an incredible fast brewer, what I enjoy for very clean cups when you have light roasts. I use it with the ZP6.
@@deefpurple9688 I tried Timemore once and if I remember it was really good. I have a video about Orea V4 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9PyiAbpv7Ys.htmlsi=k2ipj-C0knO2NemC
The normcore dosing ring with magnets works ok with the Pesado filter basket. It is not super magnetic (the basket) but you eliminate some of that gap from the overhang.
I have the size L and XL HE basket. I think it extracts too high if you use it traditionally. It ends up highlighting roasty notes that cover up clarity. I have found that lowering extraction ( less time, lower temp, shorter ratio) allow this basket to shine Jack i think this makes sense that you picked the Wafo for flavor since it was a lower but just as even of extraction.. higher extraction isnt always better Thanks for the video!
Thx for watching and sharing your experience. I just pulled a blooming espresso (one of the viewers asked me for that) and it was definitely overextracted.
Perhaps the even higher extraction % is helping out with making a better / slightly stronger americanos. I think the flatter (non tapered) bottom may be helping achieve that higher extraction on the Pesado.
@@mycoffeeshow111 My latest gear is the Timemore 078s, some hand grinders, and picked up another La Pavoni, I had the smaller boiler Europiccola and picked up a fancy larger boiler fancier looking one, not sure which I want to keep. I've been liking pour over more than espresso lately. More drink to drink using less coffee!
@@mycoffeeshow111 I might sell the La pavoni too maybe both of them. I don't use them much. I thought lever machines were very forgiving but the BDB is also that way I think the e61 machine I had previously was just inconsistent or not as forgiving. For the 078 vs 078s, It just seems weird spending so much on a pour over only grinder. My reasoning is that if I liked it I'd get the 078 pour over burr later. The 078s has finer adjustments so it can do espresso better than if I had a 078 and popped in the espresso burrs. But with what people say about how tricky it is to swap burrs I might just sell it too. I listed mine for sale but at a probably too high price.
Awarding points based on extraction % isn't super useful. I wouldn't give it the same weight as your taste preference at least. Maybe up to 5 points based on taste, and one additional point to the one that extracts the highest, if you have to use it at all. Otherwise another interesting test!
Thx for watching. You are absolutely right. I would probably split it into two categories if it affected overall result or mentioned something about extraction not being that important by itself. As it was, the results would be the same.
Always tough to find the best way to compare to coffee gear items. Usually each grinder, basket, machine, burr set will all taste ideal at different extraction times, Temps, ratios. It makes the task of perfect comparison nearly impossible. You would have to dial in each piece of equipment over many many shots until you found its perfect combo and then compare to the perfect combo on the other piece of equipment. At that point you are likely comparing apples to oranges
@@davidjaniszewski6653 you are very right. That’s why I repeat over and over again, that mine tests are not scientific. Sometimes the same coffee pulled the same way can taste completely different on different days. I have noticed for example, if I get stressed or depressed I can’t taste flavous the same way as when relaxed. Anyway, get me to 100k subs and I will do those tests better 😛
I haven’t had any issues but heard from people who mentioned that group head was leaking with this basket. Maybe slightly more difficult to remove the puck but just slightly.
I tried Manhattan but it can be very expensive. Sometimes I use less developed filter coffee beans like Dak for espresso. Normally for the tests I go for something good but cheaper 😛
Hi, can’t say for sure as I haven’t compared them but just for you, I pulled a blooming espresso and drinking it right now. Seems overextracted. Still drinkable but lost the character of the coffee.
Great video, Jack! how much finer are you having to go to get the same sort of extraction compared to a "normal" basket? If you are comparing like for like I presume your HE flow rate would be a lot higher and hence needing to go a lot finer to get the same sort of output?
Thx for watching. You are right, this is a very fast basket so you would grind much finer. Just remember that HE baskets can easily overextract so 23-25sec might be enough while I would go for longer with regular basket
I think that for half the price the new IKAPE laser basket that is either patterned on the Pesado basket (or out and out copied) is probably more doable for most of us. I just can’t imagine plunking $65 for a filter basket unless it’s going to be worth the extra money. Thanks for the review though 😊
I just bought the IKAPE HE basket after seeing this comment. Looks like it is a standard thickness 304SS basket that will flex and warp but has more holes. For $30 US I will try it and gift it if it's not an improvement. I Love the Pesado HE baskets flavor and build but they don't do long ratio shots very well combined with my 83mm SSP MP burrs. Super clean up front and then a dominating roasts note that lingers at the end unless you lower the extraction. I prefer the Pesado HE baskets combined with my EK43s with post 2015 burrs or my 1zpresso K-Plus
@@davidjaniszewski6653 thx for sharing your experience. Please keep us posted. I can’t test all the baskets by myself. Especially when personally I often prefer drinking pour overs 😛
@mycoffeeshow111 Received my IKAPE laser basket today. It has some major tradeoffs but does make great coffee. 1. It only comes in 22g size and even 19g was way to low without a puck screen on top 2. It is very thin and flexible which allows the base to dome out and possible longevity issues 3. Slot style holes are very large and allow coffee particles into cup, not just fines. Maybe a paper lower filter would fix this 4. Not a ridgeless basket 5. Does not have the precision shape of the Pesado or billet baskets Another case of you get what you pay for. I like it better than the E&B all in one and about the same as the MHW-3BOMBER BEP filter. I think the Pesado is worth the extra money for a lifetime product that performs really well
There are 4 of them- tricky to approach. I am using them daily now and probably record a video talking about my experience with all 4. Will need more time for that but I have to say they seem very good, especially when you think how cheap they are.
I hope Wafo pays you for advertising, because I already want to buy it :) I read on their website "After Tamping, No Top Paper, No Metal Puck Screen." will this really ruin all the magic of Wafo?
Thx for watching. I really like Wafo but there are cheaper alternatives like PCL or All in One. As for your question- I don’t know as I haven’t tried. Will have to check at some point. Right now I’m testing Kafmasino baskets
Well, I hope you cleaned the holes on the Pesado as I saw few times in the video that the pesado has many clogged holes. I also suspect that because of the profiles you used to grind too fine for the pesado… You didn’t talk about grind differences between the two baskets.
It is not that easy to clean them. Most of the time I ignore that problem. I had few chats about it and the consensus is that blocked holes don’t affect overall results. Who knows. As for settings, I kinda mentioned it at the end but not clearly. For most of the time, I didn’t have to change settings or just by a fraction to achieve similar time of extraction (I accept 2 sec difference).
@@mycoffeeshow111yea, it can be a challenge to clean, I let it dry and use an air blower to get it cleaned. I find it hard to believe that if you have so many blocked holes that it wouldn’t affect the extraction. What grinder did you use? I would also add that those high extraction baskets are mainly for light and very light roasted coffees that will benefit from high and even extraction, where many people just get them hoping they will get better coffee… 😅
@@mycoffeeshow111 Thankd, anyways, keep up with the great content. I know it wasn’t scientific and it’s nice to see interesting videos. I find those baskets benefit from a low FLOW profile on my decent (ever since the decent I’m mainly doing custom FLOW profiles) and find it the easiest to work with and get great results, considering that you won’t get a classic espresso out of those baskets as those aren’t for classic espresso.
Why everyone is comparing different basket with same settings. Why not adjusting for best taste with each basket and then compare taste profile and possibilities.
@@mycoffeeshow111 I only know this bc my order just arrived from a Chinese address and had to message Pesado to inquire more about where the manufacturing takes place! For $200+ for the bundle, I will be returning this!
@@mycoffeeshow111 understood. I didn’t have that experience unfortunately. The country of origin was hidden and that feels deceitful. I’d also expect the price to be 1/2 of what I paid. Lesson learned I guess ✅
