Pesaro, a city located in the Marche region in Italy, is known for its rich history, cultural heritage and natural beauty. Overlooking the Adriatic Sea and crossed by the river Foglia, Pesaro is a seaside and industrial center located between two coastal hills: the San Bartolo and the Ardicio. Its historical centre is rich in elements of interest, especially from the Renaissance period.
Pesaro has an urban area that extends beyond the municipal boundaries and includes several other municipalities. Its sandy beach is divided into three areas: the coastline of the bay of Flaminia, the Ponente sector in the central area and the Levante sector. Since 2005, the city has been awarded the Blue Flag, an annual award given to recognize the municipalities that meet the criteria of excellent bathing water quality and the service offered. Since 2016, Pesaro has also been awarded the Green Flag, an official recognition of the Association of Italian Pediatricians for the ideal seaside resorts for the livability of children.
Pesaro's climate is subcontinental, with cold and humid winters and hot and thirsty summers. The city has two main weather stations: that of the Assam in Villa Caprile and the Valerio Observatory, founded in 1861 and located in the historic park of the Giulii Gardens.
As far as history is concerned, the name of the city, in Latin "Pisaurum", is probably derived from the old name for the river Leaf, "Isaurus" or "pisaurus". The development of the city dates back to the Iron Age, when Pesaro was probably a Pican village.
Pesaro has been named Italian Capital of Culture for the current year, a recognition that highlights its cultural and historical wealth and that brings with it a series of events and initiatives to promote its heritage.
Pesaro, being a city rich in history and culture, offers numerous monuments and historical points of interest to visit. Here are some of the most significant:
Rocca Costanza: A fortress built in the 15th century, is one of the symbols of the city. The Rocca is an excellent example of Renaissance military architecture.
Casa Rossini: The birthplace of Gioachino Rossini, the famous composer, now transformed into a museum dedicated to his life and works.
Duomo di Pesaro (Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta): This cathedral, dating back to the 4th century, has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Inside you can admire beautiful floor mosaics dating back to the Roman era.
Duke's Palace: A beautiful Renaissance palace that was once the residence of the Dukes of Urbino. Today it houses government offices, but some parts are open to the public.
Theatre Rossini: A historical theatre dedicated to Gioachino Rossini. It is famous for its excellent acoustics and for being the venue of the Rossini Opera Festival.
Villa Imperiale di Pesaro: Located on the hills of Pesaro, this Renaissance villa is famous for its beautiful gardens and interior frescoes.
Civic Museums of Pesaro: Located inside the Moscow Palace, these museums house a large collection of Renaissance art, including works by Giovanni Bellini and Guido Reni.
Monte San Bartolo Regional Natural Park: Not exactly a monument, but an area of remarkable natural and historical beauty, with splendid views of the Adriatic Sea and paths that cross ancient villages and archaeological sites.
Piazza del Popolo: The heart of the city, this square is surrounded by historic buildings and cafes, and is an ideal place to taste the city's atmosphere.
Church of St. John the Baptist: Also known as the Suffrage Church, it is famous for its interior frescoes and Baroque architecture.
These are just a few of the many attractions that Pesaro has to offer, making it an ideal destination for lovers of history, art and architecture.
