Pet Funnel-web spider does NOT enjoy bath time

One of my Australian Blue Mountains Funnel-web spiders (Hadronyche versuta) had a minor mite infestation, so I decided to take her out for a bit of cleaning, and give her an improved enclosure as well.

You know what the funny ironic part of all this is? These creatures (animals, arachnids, bugs, whatever you wanna call them) cannot "Love" you back the way a cat or dog can, or whatever other semi-intelligent animal/pet can. They have no concept of pet-master relationship or whats going on. They simply exist as nature's robots, drones, programed to do what nature programed them to do and nothing more. The only literal thing saving his owner/handler is size. If it wasnt for our size, dammmmnnnnnnnn we would be so dead LOL (anyone play Grounded on xbox or PC? Hahahaha) A snake, a scorpion, a tarantula, funnel web, wolf spider, etc, its like having a shark as a pet (just extreme opposite size but same concept) one does not have a spider as a pet I imagine expecting love and to love, and mourn when the spider dies. If that spider could he'd sooooooo kill this guy so fast and he'd die a gruesome death having his insides liquified while paralyzed and drank out by the spiders tubes between his fangs. Like we talking one of the most horrific deaths possible in life. Our only salvation: size. Just size. Think about that.

If anything shes more trouble... Lol). I have 2 dogs (1 is service dog other is one in training ) , 4 cats (2 house 2 wild that live in the barn withmy horses and a goat thag just turned up 2yrs ago and never left. And a couple are former winners i rode). I have a goat of unknown heritage that just appeared one day 2 yrs ago. I think she had belonged to a former nearby racing stable. And escaped. She found my horses they adopted her without bothering to let me know . so now i have a even funnier looking lawn mower than i had before. I have 10 chickens and a loud mouthed rooster called Ace. And a whole bunch of crazy people who keep insisting their related to me somehow. Personally i dont see the resemblance. But their fun and can be entertaining so I. keep them around. A minor recommendation that will help her, or any other spiders, be significantly less pissed off about a bath use a fan brush ( I use a size 4 synthetic one used for acrylic paints) for cleaning mites off. It's got a wider area of coverage and acts like a miniature broom. Most retailers carry them as either a singular brush or as part of a cheapish package (or just go to a hobby or craft store and get one for fairly cheap about $4 USD/$5 AUD). I've found that synthetic fibers seem to not piss off arachnids as much as a horsehair or straw YMMV but it works for me. As a side note I also give one to guests who are usually scared of spiders to pet my T. blondi and she loves it. She's never been super aggressive, as she's always liked to to be handled ever since I got her when she was spiderling, but her size is intimidating to most which makes the brush a way of her breaking the ice.
@BugsandBiology

We use predatory hypoaspis mites to remove parasitic mites. You can find them from a guy on Facebook. $12.50 + post can treat about 40 animals. Can get you more details if you want
@BugsandBiology

I would if mites were a major problem i.e. if a large number of animals I owned had serious infestations, but because it is small scale and only a single animal, I felt a clean and a subsequent rehouse was the best option. Thanks for the info anyway.

At the end of the day, funnelwebs pose very little threat to people. No one's been killed by one since an antivenom was developed, and that was about forty years ago. Even without antivenom, the mortality rate tends to be around 5% or lower if I recall correctly.

I gotta say, you’re a brave man for keeping one of those things as a pet as the bite from that particular species can kill a person if it’s not treated immediately and then looking at the fangs on her, good God man , I couldn’t imagine the pain just from the bite itself, but she’s a beautiful specimen. Great job taking care of her.
@BugsandBiology
@BugsandBiology 3 года назад
Cheers! While it is recommended to seek medical attention immediately if bitten by any funnelweb species, honestly the situation isn't as dire as many think. With the exception of Hadronyche formidabilis and Hadronyche cerberea, all funnelweb species with documented bites have a low rate of severe envenomation (under 20%), and ever since an antivenom was developed around 40 years ago, no one has been killed by a funnelweb.
