Following the recent passing of a very close and dear friend of The Puppy Barber, in conjunction with the family, we would like to broadcast a very important public service announcement!
I hope the family is doing alright, in all of this. Looked like Bandit was a wonderful dog, and was very, VERY loved. Mostly commenting to help this get into the algorithm, both for Bandit's memory and the important PSA. Additional advice for those who take their four-legged companions with them on outings: -Cooling Coats and Mats are moderately helpful. They're not a cure-all, especially not in humid climates, but they can help. -Less for the heat itself, and moreso to prevent burns from hot concrete, I always recommend folks teach their dogs how to comfortably wear shoes, when they can. We don't tend to realize when it's too hot, without checking it, because we wear shoes... Dogs, for one reason or another, at times tend not to notice and will just keep walking with you. (This isn't an option for everyone, and not all dogs take to shoes no matter how gently they're introduced; this isn't a necessity, but it's still a possibility to keep in mind) -Stick to early morning and evening outings. (Goes for people, too! If you don't HAVE to be out in the blistering heat, please limit how much you're out there.) -Be particularly mindful of brachycephalic dogs (pugs, frenchies, bulldogs, boxers, boston terriers, etc.) They in particular are vulnerable to the heat. Everyone stay safe, and as cool as possible.
Absolutely heartbreaking! The family is in our thoughts and prayers! We all just want to encourage everyone to be aware of this possibility and take proper precautions!
Terrible thing to happen, heat stroke. He looked like the goodest of boys too. I remember during hot summer days we used to give our dogs water with ice cubes in it (not chipped, as they like to chew on them and chipped ones might cut their mouth) and they would drink the cold water/ take an ice cube out and eat/sometimes play with it. They were medium-large sized goldens, so the ice cube size was not an issue.
Thank you for the PSA. I'm going out in the heat in a bit and will be leaving Scooby at home in the AC. He will back up from the door when he feels the heat and will be pouting when I get back bc he always goes everywhere with me. He's a little old Jack Russell Terrier. Everywhere I go today, people will ask where he is and will understand that it's just too hot for him today.
